The forest path winds beneath dripping firs, fifteen miles from the nearest town. Crafted wares shift in your pack, ready to barter for flour, salt, and other necessities.

Your semi-tamed fox suddenly bolts ahead, ignoring the trail, and begins worrying at a fallen peddler's pack. Its ears flatten toward the surrounding brush.

The peddler is a thin, middle-aged man in a mud-stained green cloak, with a gray beard, battered boots, and a brass clasp shaped like a leaf. He lies beside the pack, alive and rigid.

Edrin Vale

Edrin Vale

Easy, little beast. Take the cloth, if you must, but leave me breathing.

At once, something shifts within the thorny brush to your left. A twig snaps, then another, while the fox keeps tugging at a tied bundle.

Edrin Vale

Edrin Vale

Traveler, if you are there, do not step into the open. They have watched this road since dawn.

The path offers little cover beyond a mossy cedar and the peddler's overturned handcart. Your fox pauses, muzzle buried in the pack, awaiting the food that earns its obedience.

“"Oh shit!" I'm not used to minding my tongue, when mine are the only ears to hear what falls from it, and I heed his warning only with a steep inhale and a look of suspicion at the area around me. "Sir who do you mean? Wouldn't they hear us speaking regardless?" I do lower my tone, but what 'they' could he mean that wouldn't have noticed Patter the fox or this peddler addressing me?”

SUCCESS (Superb Stealth, rolled -3)

Octavius

Octavius

Oh, shit. Sir, who do you mean? Wouldn't they hear us speaking regardless?

You lower your voice and scan the dripping firs, the thorn brush, and the overturned cart. Your sharp inhale carries farther than intended, and the brush answers with a faint rustle.

Edrin Vale

Edrin Vale

The men watching this road. Three of them, at least. They hear us, aye, but they listen for panic, footsteps, and the clink of steel.

Octavius

Octavius

The brush is occupied, but the peddler cannot see all of it from where he lies.

Edrin Vale

Edrin Vale

The one behind the cedar has a horn. The others keep wide, beyond the cart and uphill. Speak softly, and they may mistake caution for ignorance.

Patter freezes with the stolen cloth between his teeth. Beneath the firs, a third twig snaps uphill, confirming the peddler's warning while revealing that your outburst has drawn attention.

“I back away into the brush and whisper a soft instruction that I hope is reasonable. "Yell at Patter, and flap your hand over his head. He will think you are playing. It won't matter what words you say. Let them think you mean the fox." I say, dragging my hand across wet dirt to smear grit and mud across my brow and cheeks to break the shape and colour of them as i hide myself in the brush and ready my bow.”

Yell at Patter, and flap your hand over his head. Let them think you are playing with the fox. The words will not matter.

The peddler gives the smallest nod. You retreat into the wet brush, dragging muddy fingers across your brow and cheeks until your features break into earth and shadow.

Behind thorn and fern, you settle low with your back angled away from the injured hip. Your enchanted bow comes ready, its limbs dark beneath the dripping leaves.

Edrin Vale

Edrin Vale

You thieving little devil! Drop that cloth, you mangy rascal!

He flaps one hand over Patter's head and reaches theatrically for the bundle. The fox dodges, turning the act into a convincing scuffle beside the cart.

Edrin Vale

Edrin Vale

That is it, then. Come out and claim your prize, you cowardly road ghosts!

The brush falls quiet. From behind the cedar comes a muted snort, followed by a careful shift of weight. Your bow remains hidden, steady, and ready.

“While Patter the fox thinks it is a game, it is one in deadly earnest. When that bandit comes to investigate the voices, let him think he heard the peddler yelling at a wild animal. ....and if the man who comes has a horn... Then we will see if I loose a charmed arrow into the soft flesh of his throat.”

Patter jerks the cloth free and bounds around the cart, making the peddler's furious performance sound genuine. You remain motionless beneath the wet thorn branches.

A broad-shouldered adult man steps from behind the cedar. His patchwork leather jerkin is dark with rain, and a curved horn hangs at his belt beneath a heavy brown cloak.

Edrin Vale

Then come quiet it yourself, you skulking kennel-master! He has half my wares in his teeth.

The horned bandit advances beside the overturned cart, eyes fixed on the fox and peddler. His companions remain hidden uphill and beyond the road.

Octavius

The horn is still at his belt, and his throat is unguarded.

Patter circles closer to the man's boots, tail lashing in playful excitement. The bandit bends toward him, fully committed to the harmless quarrel, while your enchanted bow stays concealed and ready.

“I'm hidden. And though my left hand is weakened, I don't need my thumb to draw the bow. It's why I use this instead of a melee weapon. The light draw weight means that I can brace my thumb against the hold and use it to my advantage. I want this man on the ground dead before he can touch my fox, much less yell or blow his horn.”

Your weakened left thumb braces against the bow's hold instead of gripping it. The light draw settles smoothly, hidden beneath wet thorn and shadow.

The horned bandit reaches toward Patter, his attention fixed on the fox. You release before his fingers touch fur or horn.

The enchanted arrow crosses the short distance without a shout or whistle. It strikes the bandit's unguarded throat, and he collapses beside the cart, dead before he can cry out.

Patter springs backward, dropping the cloth as the body folds into the mud. The horn remains untouched at the dead man's belt.

Edrin Vale

Do not rise yet. The other two heard nothing, but they will see him soon.

Uphill, brush shifts once beneath the rain. The peddler presses himself flatter behind the cart while Patter crouches near its wheel, suddenly silent.

“I put my finger to my lips and slide forward as quietly as I can. I give the fallen bandit a tug, just enough to judge resistance from the body's weight. Can I pull it out of sight into the hedges with me before another comes to follow? Certainly these three don't have such a small perimeter, it would be foolish if they came so quickly with no noise of alarm.”

The body is heavier than it looks, but the wet ground gives beneath it.

You raise one finger to your lips, then slide from the thorn cover toward the fallen bandit. Patter remains crouched by the cart wheel, watching the brush.

Your first tug tests the weight. Leather scrapes softly over mud, but the corpse shifts without resistance. You hook your grip beneath his cloak and draw him backward.

Edrin Vale

Edrin Vale

Easy now. Slow is quiet.

Using the cedar's shadow and the cart as cover, you drag the bandit's body into the hedges. Wet leaves fold over his cloak, hiding him from the road.

The horn stays at his belt, and no alarm follows. Uphill, the unseen watchers remain somewhere beyond the rain-softened brush, unaware of the missing shape beside the cart.

Edrin Vale

That buys us a breath, traveler. Do not mistake it for safety.

the first watcher

You keep low beneath the cedar's dripping boughs and let the rain separate nearby movement from the forest's ordinary creaks.

The first watcher, a young adult man with a weathered face and dark skin beneath his gray hood lies uphill behind a split boulder, a lean figure in a gray hood with a short bow trained toward the cart.

The second, a young adult man with a narrow brown face, close-cropped black hair, and a dark green jacket crouches beyond the road in a tangle of hazel, partly screened by fern. A thin cord runs from his hand across the path.

Octavius

Octavius

The cord is a warning line, not a snare. They expected someone to approach the cart.

The rain has betrayed more than their positions. Their footprints form a clear retreat toward an abandoned charcoal-burner's track, leaving the uphill watcher exposed if either man moves.

Edrin Vale

Edrin Vale

You see them, then. Gods be thanked. The one by the hazel has the signal cord, and the other watches the road.

“I keep my voice so low it's little more than lip reading a breath on the peddlers part. "What does the signal cord do?"”

SUCCESS (Legendary Stealth, rolled +0)

Octavius

Octavius

What does the signal cord do?

Edrin Vale

Edrin Vale

It runs back to their camp. Pull it, and a bell rings beneath the charcoal-burner's shed. Their friends come running.

The peddler barely moves his lips. Beyond the road, the crouching man keeps one hand wrapped around the cord, watching the cart and the rain.

Octavius

Octavius

The cord summons help rather than catches prey.

Edrin Vale

Edrin Vale

He will tug it if he sees me freed, or if the watcher by the boulder gives the sign. Do not let either man reach it.

Behind the split boulder, the gray-hooded archer shifts his bow a finger's width, still unaware of your exact position. The cord lies exposed across the muddy path.

Edrin Vale

Edrin Vale

Cutting it would announce us. Leaving it whole gives them their summons. Choose your moment, traveler.

“If I kill the bandit by the cord, can I kill the other before he can reach it as well?”

NO (Likely, rolled 73)

The rain shifts across the road, and the gray-hooded archer's gaze settles nearer your hiding place. His bow remains trained toward the cart, ready for sudden movement.

Beyond the hazel, the cord-holder keeps his fingers looped around the signal line. The distance between him and the charcoal-burner's track is only a few quick strides.

Edrin Vale

Edrin Vale

No. If the cord-man sees his fellow fall, he need only jerk once. The bell will ring before you cross the path.

The answer settles through the wet undergrowth. The exposed cord is not merely a summons, but a second watcher's weapon, ready to turn any attack into an alarm.

The archer shifts behind the split boulder, gaining a clearer angle on the cart. His companion glances toward him, waiting for a sign neither dares give yet.

Edrin Vale

Edrin Vale

You cannot count on silence after the first shot. One man may fall, but the other can still call the camp.

The peddler stays pressed beneath the cart's shelter, eyes fixed on the cord. Around you, rain taps leaves and leather while the watchers hold their breath.

“What about the man who holds the cord. Can I kill him and loose a second shot at the second man before he reaches the cord himself?”

NO (Unlikely, rolled 57)

The cord-holder is already poised over the line, close enough to jerk it the instant danger appears. The archer's position covers his first movement.

Even a clean shot at the man beyond the hazel would leave the signal within his grasp. Before a second arrow could find its mark, the bell would carry through the rain.

Edrin Vale

Edrin Vale

No. The cord-man is too near his summons, and the archer is watching the space between them. Strike one, and the other need only twitch.

The gray-hooded watcher settles his bow against the boulder, not aiming at the cord-holder but at the approaches around him. Their positions deny a rapid exchange.

The man in the hazel tightens his fingers around the cord. He does not look afraid, but his knuckles pale as he waits for the smallest disturbance.

Edrin Vale

Edrin Vale

You have one silence left, traveler. Whatever comes after that, the charcoal-burner's shed will answer.

“I back away into the brush to where the rear guard with the alarm horn was hidden as a body. I take the horn and -RUN- away from the peddler, in a direction that is not close to any of them, but any stray shots would not risk the peddler or his overturned cart. I am not trying to be noisy, but neither am I trying to be silent. I swallow my chest into my stomach to try and deepen my voice like the horn-blower bandits was, and cry an alarm that seems more trivial than alarming. "MOTHERFUCKING BADGER GET OFF ME YOU WANNABE SKUNK! GOD DAMMIT OW!!"”

They know that voice, then. Keep still. One has left the cord, and the other is guarding the wrong danger.

Harl pushes through the wet ferns, searching for the supposed struggle. The road opens behind him, and the alarm line lies briefly unattended.

“"OW GODDAMMIT! Harl GET OVER HERE!" I roar out in my best growl of frustration and annoyance rather than panic or real danger. As soon as the cord-guard bandit is out of the hooded archers sight, he gets the same treatment as the bandit with the alarm horn. Through the throat, dead in a wet gurgle that cannot overcome the sound of heavy drops of water falling steadily through the dense canopy of deciduous forest.”
