The Young Nieces and Cousins

The elderly aunt and young maid turn toward the doorway as several young nieces and cousins hurry into Lo pi’s chamber, their white-and-red garments rustling.

Some children wear finished doll-like white face paint with red accents; others remain partly prepared, while their accompanying maids follow with brushes, ribbons, and powder.

The Young Nieces and Cousins

The Young Nieces and Cousins

Good morning, Lo pi! You are awake and dressed already!

Their excitement fills the compact room. They gather around him in a bright cluster, careful sleeves brushing the screens as the maids pause behind them.

Lo pi

Lo pi

Good morning, everyone. You all look so nice.

The Elderly Aunt

The Elderly Aunt

Such a warm greeting. Now they will surely insist on showing him every ribbon and painted detail.

The Young Maid

The Young Maid

My lord, shall we finish the remaining faces here, or let the children lead you to the morning gathering?

✓ Quest Accepted

Earn the young relatives’ trust

“I continue with them for a while and then make my way down to the male floor, the 19th, to see how my male cousin, nephews, uncles etc are doing, if theyre even up up yet”

FAILURE (Good Perception, rolled -2)

For a while, Lo pi remains with the children as maids finish painted cheeks, tie ribbons, and display each careful sleeve. Their laughter warms the cedar room.

The Young Nieces and Cousins

Look, Lo pi! Mine has the brightest red, and hers has the longest ribbon!

The children parade their details before him, turning in place while the elderly aunt watches fondly. When the gathering begins below, they guide him into the pagoda’s broad inner passage.

He leaves the family floor and climbs through the wooden tower toward the nineteenth level. Morning light narrows between the stair rails as the household sounds fade behind him.

At the male floor, the landing door stands shut and barred from within. No voices answer his presence, and the latch gives no movement beneath his hand.

The Elderly Aunt

The Elderly Aunt

They may still be sleeping, Lo pi. The eastern service stair reaches their corridor, but it is opened only after the morning bell.

The failed approach leaves him with a clear choice: return to the gathering below, or wait near the eastern stair and learn who wakes when the bell sounds.

The Elderly Aunt

The Elderly Aunt

Wait, Lo pi. The eastern stair is the proper way, and your patience may spare you an awkward interruption.

She leads him to the eastern landing, where a narrow cedar bench faces the barred passage. The household bell hangs above, its cord within easy reach.

The Young Maid

The Young Maid

The bell will call the servants soon, my lord. You may miss the first course below, but the family will understand.

The aunt settles beside the screens rather than returning downstairs. As she draws the door’s inner bolt aside, the old wood gives a sharp crack, loud enough to carry through the tower.

The Elderly Aunt

The Elderly Aunt

There. The corridor knows we are here now. Let us hope the sleepers are more gracious than the hinges.

From beyond the door comes a muffled stir, followed by a single cough. Below, the morning bell begins, and the first meal proceeds without them.

“I ask how well the bottom floor public lounges, dinning and hotel are going, if theyre generating much coin for the tower”

Lo pi

Aunt, how are the public lounges, dining rooms, and hotel on the bottom floor doing? Are they bringing much coin to the tower?

His question carries through the eastern corridor and beyond the barred landing. Another cough answers from the sleeping floor, followed by a rustle of hurried bedding.

The Elderly Aunt

The Elderly Aunt

They are doing well, Lo pi. The lounges stay lively, the dining rooms fill at midday, and travelers occupy most of the guest rooms.

The Elderly Aunt

The Elderly Aunt

The tower receives a healthy share of coin each week, enough for repairs, servants, provisions, and a reserve besides. The hotel is our strongest earner.

The Young Maid

The Young Maid

Yesterday, my lord, every table near the garden was taken. Guests praised the cedar beams and asked whether the family still owns the upper floors.

The eastern door opens a handspan. A sleepy male voice mutters a complaint from within, while the aunt raises one finger, asking Lo pi to keep his voice low.

“It is good we are close to "yin", the big city, there is many who roam these regions because of it. Without yin we would have much less coming here for luxury”

Lo pi

It is good that we are close to Yin, the great city. So many people roam these regions because of it, bringing travelers here for luxury.

His warm observation carries through the half-open door and along the eastern landing. The sleepy corridor falls quiet, as though the household is listening despite itself.

The Elderly Aunt

The Elderly Aunt

You see the tower clearly, Lo pi. Yin draws the crowds, and our lounges, tables, and rooms give those travelers reason to remain.

The Young Maid

The Young Maid

Without the city nearby, my lord, even our finest rooms would wait empty far more often. Its roads fill the tower’s halls.

Inside the male corridor, bedding shifts sharply. The hidden sleeper coughs again, then drags a wooden screen aside with an irritated scrape.

The Sleepy Male Voice

The Sleepy Male Voice

Must the whole eastern stair hear a lecture on Yin before breakfast? Still, the boy is right. The city keeps this tower prosperous.

“You should up, ready to earn honor for the tribe by this hour anyways. Men of the clan work hard not lazily”

Lo pi

You should get up. It is time to work hard and earn honor for the clan, not lie lazily in bed.

The words sharpen the quiet landing. The screen slides fully aside, revealing an adult man with a broad build, tousled black hair, and a creased blue sleeping robe.

The Sleepy Male Voice

The Sleepy Male Voice

Honor before breakfast? You have chosen a demanding hour, cousin. Very well, I am getting up.

He rises, folds his bedding aside, and reaches for a dark work coat. In his haste, a wooden basin tips from the wall shelf and crashes across the cedar floor.

The Elderly Aunt

The Elderly Aunt

There is your cost for waking the corridor, nephew. Now make the noise worthwhile and report to the steward.

The Sleepy Male Voice

The Sleepy Male Voice

I will. The clan shall have my hands before the first course is cleared.

He steps into the eastern passage fully dressed, gathers the basin pieces, and then heads down toward the service hall, awake and committed to the morning’s labor.

“I smile and shrug. I continue with my aunt, with a verbal admiration of her dress”

Lo pi smiles and shrugs, then keeps pace beside his aunt as they leave the eastern landing. Her layered plum dress brushes the cedar boards with each measured step.

Lo pi

Lo pi

Aunt, your plum dress is beautiful. The layers and careful sleeves make you look ready for any gathering.

The Elderly Aunt

The Elderly Aunt

Beautiful, perhaps, but hardly ready. You have praised the robe before noticing what its loose clasp is doing.

She stops beneath the stair lantern and touches the clasp at her shoulder. It hangs crooked, leaving one formal layer uneven across her chest.

The Elderly Aunt

The Elderly Aunt

Your admiration has caught a real fault, Lo pi. We cannot enter the public hall until this is fastened properly.

The elderly aunt turns toward a small linen alcove beside the service stair, while the young maid hurries ahead to fetch a needle, thread, and a polished clasp from the household chest.

Lo pi steps aside in the linen alcove, leaving the clasp and loose layers to the young maid’s practiced hands. The narrow space smells of clean cloth and cedar.

The Young Maid

The Young Maid

Thank you, my lord. Hold still, my lady, and I will have the clasp settled in a moment.

The young maid smooths the plum fabric, aligns the formal fold, and fastens the polished clasp beneath the elderly aunt’s shoulder. The robe falls evenly again.

The Elderly Aunt

The Elderly Aunt

There. Much better. Lo pi, your praise nearly sent us into the hall looking splendid on one side and careless on the other.

The Young Maid

The Young Maid

The layers are secure now, my lady. The sleeves sit properly, and no one below will notice the earlier fault.

The elderly aunt checks the clasp with two fingers, then gives the maid an approving nod. From the stairwell, voices and dishes rise from the busy public floors.

The Elderly Aunt

The Elderly Aunt

Come along, both of you. The morning gathering waits, and the hotel’s guests should see the family in good order.
