After the woman finishes her story, Twyla returns through the shadowed gates of the underworld. Her home waits empty beneath dim gray gloom, silent except for distant whispers.

She warms a small pot of chocolate and stirs it slowly, the sweet scent briefly softening the cold air. Then she settles with her book in the lamplight.

A hard knock breaks the quiet. The door opens to a broad-shouldered young adult man in travel-stained leather, a weathered sword at his hip and rain-dark hair falling across one eye.

Come inside. Why do you seek the Grim Reaper?

Twyla steps aside, holding the door wide. The adventurer crosses the threshold cautiously, boots leaving dark rain marks on the stone floor.

Corin

Corin

Because my brother died three winters ago, and his spirit never reached the halls beyond.

He removes his dripping cloak and keeps one hand near his sword, though the dim house offers no visible threat. Firelight catches the weariness beneath his guarded expression.

Corin

Corin

A village seer told me the Reaper might know where he was taken. I followed every rumor until I found this gate.

Corin

Corin

If she truly is his daughter, perhaps she can finally tell me the truth.

The door settles shut behind him, sealing out the rain. The scent of chocolate lingers between them as his request hangs in the cold, gray silence.

A real adventure.

Twyla’s eyes widen, lamplight catching on her silver moon pin and star necklace. The adventurer notices her sudden interest and lowers his hand from his sword.

Corin

Corin

Yes. Though I came seeking answers, not danger for its own sake.

He gathers his rain-dark cloak from the chair and steps back toward the open doorway, leaving the chocolate’s warmth behind him.

Corin

Corin

If you know nothing of my brother, I will trouble you no longer. Thank you for hearing me.

He pauses beneath the gray gate, waiting only long enough to ensure he has not misunderstood her, then turns toward the shadowed road.

“I hold out my hand and say wait can I come with you I’ve never gotten to experience a real person before only dead ones”

Wait. Can I come with you? I’ve never gotten to experience a real person, only dead ones.

Twyla holds out her hand beneath the gray gate. The words leave her quieter than intended, and her fingers remain rigid as the effort drains her composure.

Corin

Corin

You mean you have only ever spoken with the dead?

His living presence is warm in the cold doorway.

The adventurer studies her small figure, the silver chain at her ankle, and the scythe waiting in the dim room behind her. His guarded expression eases.

Corin

Corin

All right. Come with me, then. But this road may be dangerous, and I cannot promise answers about your own past.

He steps aside beneath the gate and offers his hand, keeping his cloak gathered in the other. Beyond him, rain whispers over the shadowed road.

Twyla slips back into the lamplit room and takes a hooded mantle from a peg beside the door, drawing it over her messy bun and silver moon pin.

She lifts her scythe from its resting place, secures her daggers, and moves with practiced silence. The star at her throat glints beneath the pulled hood.

Returning to the threshold, she steps beneath the gray gate and places her hand in the adventurer’s offered palm. Rain cools the stone around them.

Corin

Corin

You move quietly for someone carrying a scythe. What should I call you?

He adjusts his pace to hers rather than leading, cloak gathered against the rain. Behind them, the underworld door fades into shadow.

Corin

Corin

My name is Corin. My brother was named Edran, and the last trace of him leads toward the drowned chapel.

Corin

Corin

If the seer was right, that chapel may be where the dead are being kept from the halls beyond.

My name is Twyla.

Corin

Corin

Twyla, then. It suits you better than daughter of the Grim Reaper.

Corin says it carefully, as though testing the name against the rain. The road descends between black stones, and pale mist gathers around their boots.

Corin

Corin

The drowned chapel lies beyond the marsh. We should reach the old pilgrim road before dawn, if the fog stays merciful.

Twyla Selene grim

The mist smells of wet earth and something colder.

Corin

Corin

Have you ever traveled beyond the underworld gates, Twyla? Or will this be your first road among the living?

Ahead, a crooked waystone rises from the darkness, its carved arrow pointing toward the marsh. Something small moves behind it, then vanishes into the reeds.

I have only been beyond the gates to collect the souls of the dead and bring them to their afterlife.

The admission travels softly through the mist. Twyla keeps pace beside Corin, her hood beaded with rain while the waystone looms ahead.

Corin

Corin

Then this is truly your first road among the living. I had not understood how little of this world you had seen.

Corin glances toward the reeds, where the small movement disappeared, then back to her. His expression holds concern rather than disbelief.

Corin

Corin

The pilgrim road is old, but it should lead us safely toward the marsh. Stay close, and I will explain what I know.

Twyla Selene grim

The road is unfamiliar, and the waystone bears no mark of the dead.

Corin reaches the waystone and brushes moss from its carved arrow. The pause costs them several minutes, and the fog thickens before he finds the marshward path.
