The Coach Driver

The Coach Driver hauls the team tighter against the hitch rail and leans across the office threshold, peering toward the clock tower. His fingers clamp and unclamp on the reins, and every bell note makes him flinch like he expects a rifle shot to answer.

Atsumu Miya steps in beside him, staff and spellbook ready, while the barred sunlight stripes both men across the dust. The driver swallows hard and keeps his voice down, eyes never staying still for long.

The Coach Driver

The Coach Driver

If they see me here, they’ll know somebody talked. I can’t have them circling back to my family.

Atsumu Miya

Atsumu Miya

Atsumu Miya asks where the robbers are posted and how close they are to the coach.

The Coach Driver

The Coach Driver

Hollis Pike keeps the high side. Ben Tarver watches the road. Chalk, he’s the sneaky one, thinks in shadows. They’re up by the tower, maybe two streets out if they haven’t moved.

He jerks his chin toward the window, then catches himself and ducks lower, as if even that motion might be seen from the street. Outside, the bell keeps measuring the danger in slow, cruel beats.

The Coach Driver

You get your shot, mister mage. Just don’t let them know I am the reason you came.

Reach the clock tower

✓ Quest Accepted

Stop the robbers

I'll slip through the back alley to get closer to the tower.

SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +0)

The Driver's Tactical Warning

Atsumu Miya takes the hint and slips out through the rear lane, keeping low as the bell drags another warning across the town. Dust, crates, and stacked firewood break up the alley behind the sheriff’s office.

He moves fast and quiet, boots skimming the packed dirt, then pauses at the next corner when a wagon rattle passes out front. The driver’s fear stays behind him, but the tower’s silhouette stays ahead.

Atsumu Miya

The alley bends toward the tower.

He edges past a broken fence and comes up behind a tannery shed, where the street opens in a narrow slit. The clock tower stands farther off now, framed between rooflines, and the road beside it looks clear for the moment.

Atsumu Miya reaches cover with the tower in sight, hidden from the main street but not from whoever is watching high windows.

From somewhere ahead, a man’s voice barks a short warning, and the bell answers with one hard toll.

I move along the alley toward the tower

SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +2)

The Driver's Tactical Warning

Atsumu Miya slips deeper along the alley, hugging the wall and threading past crates and split firewood. The tower stays ahead between the roofs, and the last open stretch narrows to a slim run of shadow.

He crosses to the tannery shed, then cuts along its far side without breaking pace. The street beyond sits empty for a breath, all hard sunlight and long boards.

A shape flickers at the tower base, too far to make out cleanly, but the warning voice has already stirred the air again. The bell follows with another heavy note.

Unknown Man

Unknown Man

Hold there, if you want to live.

Atsumu Miya reaches the edge of the tower block in one quiet burst, landing in cover beside the stonework and the narrow lane that feeds the base of the clock tower.

The alley mouth opens on the tower approach, and whoever called out is close enough now to force a choice.

I peek around the corner

SUCCESS (Fair Perception, rolled +1)

Atsumu Miya eases his head around the stone edge just enough to look. Sun glare bleaches the lane, but the man in the open answers the question fast, a lean rider with a brim low over his eyes and a revolver resting easy in his hand.

He is not alone. Another shape waits higher up near the tower steps, half hidden by the rail, while a third shadow shifts by the doorway, listening to the street like it belongs to him.

Hollis Pike

Hollis Pike

Took you long enough.

The speaker turns his head a fraction, and Atsumu Miya catches the hard set of his jaw. Hollis Pike stands at the base, posted where the lane bottlenecks.

Up by the steps, Ben Tarver nudges his hat back and starts to reach for the rail. The man at the doorway, Chalk, keeps still, but his attention snaps straight toward the corner Atsumu Miya uses for cover.

The bell rolls overhead again, and the lane feels suddenly too narrow for everyone in it. Atsumu Miya has the robbers in sight, and they know somebody is there.

I stay hidden and study their positions

Atsumu Miya stays pressed to the stone and lets his eyes do the work. Hollis owns the choke point below, Ben covers the steps with one hand near the rail, and Chalk has the street in his sights from the doorway. The whole trap is laid in plain sight now.

Atsumu Miya

Hollis blocks the lane. Ben guards the stairs. Chalk watches the street.

A pebble slips loose under Atsumu's boot and clicks against the wall. He keeps still, but the sound needles the lane.

Hollis Pike

Hollis Pike

I heard that. You done hiding?

Ben's grip tightens on the rail, and Chalk angles his body toward the corner, cutting off any quiet rush across the open ground.

Chalk

Chalk

He knows where we are now.

The bell hammers overhead again. Atsumu has the layout, but the scrape of stone has given him away, and the robbers start to close their spacing without moving in yet.

I call out to distract Hollis

Atsumu calls out from cover, sharp and casual at once, just enough to pull one eye off the lane and onto him.

Hollis Pike

Hollis Pike

You got a mouth on you. Show yourself if you mean it.

Hollis shifts his weight toward the sound, revolver still up, but his attention breaks from the bottleneck for a breath. Ben and Chalk hold their posts, waiting on his lead.

Ben Tarver

Ben Tarver

He wants us looking at the corner. Don't give him the lane.

The bell keeps hammering overhead, filling the pause with brass and dust. In that beat of noise, the standoff loosens just enough for words to matter.

Chalk

Chalk

Talk fast, stranger. Hollis ain't patient, and I'm getting tired of this street.

Atsumu has drawn Hollis into the open earshot of the others, turning the robbers from a locked trap into a tense conversation under the tower.

I press Hollis for what they want

What are you after, Hollis? Spit it out.

Hollis lowers his chin, just enough to hear, not enough to trust. The revolver stays up, but his eyes cut sideways to Ben and Chalk before returning to Atsumu.

Hollis Pike

Hollis Pike

Money, same as every man with a gun. We keep the tower clear till the coach is paid out.

Ben Tarver

Ben Tarver

And nobody gets brave. That is the whole deal.

Atsumu's loose pebble finally gives under his boot and skitters out into the light. The little scrape is nothing, but it reminds the three men he is still pinned to the corner, listening.

Chalk

Chalk

You hear that? He is not alone in the shadows anymore.

Hollis Pike

Hollis Pike

No. He is asking because he wants a number. Twenty minutes, maybe thirty, and then we talk fair.

The bell rolls on overhead. Hollis gives away the price of the robbery, and the pause between them turns stranger, almost civil, while Atsumu waits for the next word.
