The Hedge Wizard hunches over the silver pouch and drags in a sharp breath, green light flickering in his eyes as the chant tightens in his throat.

The Hedge Wizard
Hold them off, just a moment more.
The Lead Bandit roars and both of his men rush in through the fog, boots sucking at the mud, blades raised toward Varyn Morvanth.
Varyn whips his spiked chain into the nearest lane of attack, the links snapping outward to meet the charge before steel can find flesh.

The Lead Bandit
Cursed hedge, keep your silver, just drop the spell!
The wizard shoves the pouch against his chest, stumbling back from the wagon wheel as glowing herbs spill and stain the mud with green fire.
The second bandit checks his stride at the sudden chain flash, and the crossroads tightens into a wet, ringing knot of fear and iron.

Protect the Hedge Wizard while he finishes the chant
“I rush the Lead Bandit”
SUCCESS (Superb Melee Combat, rolled +2)

Varyn Morvanth drives straight through the stall in the line, chain low and fast. The Lead Bandit jerks back, off balance in the mud, his blade hand knocked wide by the impact.
The bandit captain’s boots skid. He takes a hard step to recover, but Varyn is already inside his reach, cutting off the road and the silver wagon both.

The Lead Bandit
Hold, you fools! This one means to split us apart!
Behind him, the Driver checks his charge and wrenches short of the chain’s arc, eyes wide in the fog. The Hedge Wizard clutches the pouch tighter, green sparks trembling around his fingers.

The Hedge Wizard
Just a breath more, keep them from me!

Varyn Morvanth
The captain is exposed. The spell is still building.
Mud splashes as the Lead Bandit loses ground again, forced to yield the lane. One of his men hangs back, suddenly wary of the chain’s reach and the wizard’s glow.
For a heartbeat, the crossroads belongs to Varyn, the silver pouch, and the chant that is still not done.
“Press the captain and guard the wizard”
SUCCESS (Superb Melee Combat, rolled +3)

Varyn Morvanth surges through the gap he has made, chain snapping low again and forcing the Lead Bandit to give ground in the mud. The captain plants one boot, but the road gives under him, and his balance breaks.

The Lead Bandit
Back! Keep your distance, all of you!
The wagon lane opens for a breath, and Varyn uses it to put his body between the bandits and the Hedge Wizard. The green sparks at the wizard’s hands steady instead of dying.

The Hedge Wizard
Yes, yes, that is it, hold them there!
The Lead Bandit sees the gap close on him and hesitates hard, his blade no longer aimed at the silver but at survival. The Driver checks his step behind him, suddenly unwilling to rush the chain again.
A strip of muddy road clears in front of the wagon, and the spilled herbs glow brighter in the churned rainwater. Something metal flashes near the wizard’s pouch, half-buried where the bandits stumbled.
The chant keeps building over the moor, unbroken now, while the bandit line wavers around Varyn’s reach. One more push and the captain’s men may break entirely.
“I hold the line at the wagon”
SUCCESS (Superb Melee Combat, rolled +2)

Varyn drives the line forward and plants himself at the wagon’s flank, forcing the lead bandit to check his footing again. The silver remains behind him, untouched, while the road in front of the wheels stays clear under his blade and chain.

The Lead Bandit
Hold, damn you, hold! He is on the wagon!
The driver recoils instead of rushing in, eyes fixed on Varyn’s reach. The Hedge Wizard’s chant snaps bright and sure, and the glow around his hands tightens like a knot pulled fast.

The Hedge Wizard
A moment more, warrior, a moment more!
Something metal skitters free from the mud near the wizard’s pouch, catching the green light. It is a small iron charm, stamped with a bandit mark, half sunk in the churned road.

Varyn Morvanth
The charm is theirs.
The bandit captain’s stance breaks. He backs away from the wagon, blade high but no longer pushing for the silver, while his men hesitate in a ragged line behind him.
The chant reaches its end on the moor, and the silver is still in the village’s keeping. The captain snarls toward the road, but the opening Varyn sealed stays closed.
