The bazaar seethes with saffron heat and silk glare. Ozone bites the back of Everen's throat as the crowd parts around a table draped in blue cloth.

A swordsman stands over a trembling merchant, black runes weeping across his armor. His blade hovers near the merchant's throat, and a shattered scroll lies smashed between them.

Bren

Bren

The coin was promised. Pay, or watch him bleed for your delay.

The merchant flinches hard, both hands braced on the table edge, eyes fixed on Everen as if she were the only gate left in the world.

The Merchant

The Merchant

Please... I sent for the gold. I sent word three days ago. He's mad with it.

Everen's staff catches the knife-light. Her spellbook hangs at her side, and the press of onlookers stays back, silent and frightened.

Everen

Everen

The runes are active. The swordarm is steady.

The swordsman shifts his point toward Everen without lowering it from the merchant. His jaw tightens, and the crowd waits for her next move.

✓ Quest Accepted

Mediate a peaceful settlement for the swordsman

"Please Swordsmen, lower your blade, there is a way for this to be done peacefully, you are owed and that is clear, but not through violence will you win this. You will only dig yourself into a deeper hole, abstain from this foolishness and let's find a resolution."

The swordsman holds, then slowly lowers the blade from the merchant's throat. The crowd exhales in one tight, shared rustle.

Bren

Bren

Talk, then. But the gold comes with witnesses.

Everen's words land cleanly. The merchant swallows, shoulders shaking, and nods toward a lacquered ledger beside the blue cloth.

The Merchant

The Merchant

There is a seal missing from the chest receipt. That is why the payment stalled. I can prove the debt if he gives me a breath to open the books.

The swordsman's grip loosens by a fraction. The tip of his sword dips toward the floor, but the runes on his armor still glow faintly.

Bren

Bren

One lie, and I start cutting tables.

A hot bead of blood slips from a nick near Everen's knuckles where the blade rang against her staff. The bazaar stays hushed, waiting for the ledger to open.

"If there is error merchant and you have sent for the payment three days past surely we may follow up in person? But, let the ledgers show I have in good faith this issue shall be rectified." Everen turns to the swordsmen, "I understand the bereft nature, money is what you are owed and times are indeed dire, if it is amenable and the ledger shows not an issue perchance we might find the payment the merchant sent for ourselves?"

Everen speaks with the calm of a magistrate and the merchant finds his footing in it. The swordsman does not strike, only shifts his weight and watches her like a man reading a fine print that might still bite.

The Merchant

The Merchant

Yes. Yes, if we check the books together, I can show where the delay began.

The merchant draws the lacquered ledger closer with shaking fingers, then pushes a receipt slip into the light. A torn seal catches the eye at once, cleanly split, not lost.

Bren

Bren

The seal was broken before this morning?

The Merchant

The Merchant

Three days ago. I said so. I sent for the chest, and the runner never returned with the mark.

The swordsman's jaw works beneath his beard. The blade stays low, but his eyes leave the merchant and go, briefly, to the crowd that has gone silent around the stalls.

Bren

Bren

Then someone in this bazaar has taken more than coin.

The ledger page settles open between them, and the missing seal becomes the center of every gaze. The swordsman waits, not softened, only redirected, as if deciding whether the thief is worth hunting before the debt is bled out of somebody else.

"Please good Swordsmen, might you find it in your nature to let me assist you in tracking this thief? Between us I'm sure we can find your payment, where there is supply there is demand and seeing of the official manor of this seal we simply follower the demand based on it." Everen would turn to take a closer more detailed look as the seal.

Everen

Please, let me help track the thief. This seal has an origin, and I can read it.

Everen leans in, staff still braced, and the broken wax fills her attention. The split is wrong for a simple tear, too clean at the edges, scored by a signet she has seen before in old temple ledgers and tax vaults.

Everen

Everen

This is not a common merchant mark. It belongs to an official manor house.

The merchant's breath catches. The swordsman's stare sharpens, not at the ledger now, but at Everen's face as if weighing whether the answer costs more than the debt.

Bren

Bren

An official seal... Then this was taken by someone with reach.

He lowers the blade a fraction, then turns his wrist, angling the sword away from the merchant and toward the edge of the crowd. The hush around the stalls tightens into fear again.

The Merchant

The Merchant

No, no, wait. If you accuse the wrong stall, I am ruined.

The swordsman does not answer him. His gaze stays on Everen, waiting for the name on the seal, while the blade points outward, now a promise the bazaar can feel.

Identify the thief who took the payment

"Then let us find this nobleman, for this seal reeks of corruption and none are more corrupt than those that choose to prey on good men like yourself Swordsmen."

Then let us find the nobleman. That seal belongs to someone corrupt enough to prey on honest men like you.

Everen's words land cleanly, and the sigil in the wax clicks into place in her mind. Not a merchant mark. A manor seal, old and sanctioned, used by a household that still keeps its books through a clerk in the western quarter.

The merchant stares, as if the name has already begun to cost him. The swordsman stills, then shifts his weight toward the aisle that leads out of the bazaar, his sword no longer fixed on the ledger.

Bren

Bren

A nobleman in the western quarter, then. You are certain.

Everen

Everen

The seal is tied to a household with a clerk, and the clerk is the weak point.

The merchant swallows hard and nods toward the covered lanes beyond the spice tents, where servants and runners keep to the shadows between parcels and scales.

The Merchant

The Merchant

If it was taken here, the runner would have passed through the counting lane. House marks get traded there for favors.

The swordsman's jaw tightens. He draws the blade back from the crowd and points it toward the lane's mouth, choosing pursuit over panic. Around them, vendors pull fabric shutters half closed as a new fear ripples through the bazaar.
