The Root Tightens

The circular hollow holds still around Veyka. Her shadow lies stretched beneath the silver root, while the three outward paths spiral through darkness: saltwater to the left, hearth smoke ahead, and cold iron to the right.

The silver root tightens by a finger’s breadth. Its pale bark draws a dim red glimmer from the mark beneath Veyka’s skin, though no blood breaks the surface.

The root answers to movement, blood, and names.

When Veyka shifts her weight, the pinned shadow strains in the opposite direction. The saltwater path brightens with wet reflections, then dims as the root cinches tighter.

The hearth-scented path carries a trace of blue fire and old timber, like the longhouse left behind. No companion stands within the hollow; the wounded pale hare remains beyond, and the witness remains at the pool.

From the cold-iron path comes a muted ringing, regular as a distant hammer. Thorn-dark threads glimmer between the stones, weaving a boundary around the root’s grip.

The hollow waits without wind or stars. The root loosens only slightly, poised to tighten again at the smallest step, spilled drop, or spoken name.

Escape the Gauntlet and return toward Sri Baris

“I will not be free of the gauntlet like this. Not bound as I am. I'd need a way to sever the queens thorns, to rebind my shadow to my flesh, and a guide across the gauntlet to find my way home. I imagined each of the paths would provide me what I was looking for. The Gauntlet was a torturous realm, but fair. If I were to find cold iron to start with, it would be the path towards the forge. I knew not awaited me, but I left my shadow pinned to thorns and walked”

Veyka leaves her shadow pinned beneath the silver root and walks the cold-iron path. The thorn boundary parts around her without tightening its grip.

The ringing swells into hammer blows. Black glass gives way to iron-veined stone, and a forge rises ahead beneath an open vault of starless red.

At the anvil stands a broad elderly dwarf woman, her copper-brown skin furrowed and her white braids bound with iron rings. A soot-dark apron covers her layered gray clothes.

You came without your shadow, fae. Good. It means the thorns have not yet learned to follow.

The smith lifts a bar of cold iron from the coals. It burns with no heat, its surface etched in runes that match the silver root pinning Veyka’s shadow.

This will sever the Queen’s thorns. Strike the root with it, and your shadow will remember your flesh. The first blow also opens the guide-road home.

Behind Veyka, the forge doors swing wide onto a pale trail marked by blue fire. The dwarf sets the cold-iron bar across the anvil, already prepared for her hand.

“"That simple? Why so generous? A way to free my shadow, and a guide all in one. And i expected much worse. Whats the catch dear smith. A generous dwarf is rare, even rarer in the Gauntlet."”

That simple? Why so generous? A way to free my shadow, and a guide all in one. What’s the catch, dear smith? A generous dwarf is rare, rarer still in the Gauntlet.

Aye, there’s a catch, fae. Cold iron remembers what glamour forgets. To sever the thorn, you must give the bar a drop of your blood and speak the name you claim as yours.

The dwarf smith turns the bar across the anvil. Its runes flare, revealing a second inscription beneath the first: one road opened, one debt awakened.

Your blood buys the strike. Your name buys the road. The guide-road will carry you home, but the Queen will hear your true name ring through every gate you cross.

She offers the bar’s haft. Frost leaps from its iron into her palm, biting through glove and skin. A bead of blood darkens the cold metal, and the blue trail behind her brightens.

That is the price, and no servant’s chain hides in it. Strike once, and your shadow returns. Walk the blue fire, and the road takes you out.

“"True names have power, smith. I was more curious why you did not demand payment, but then i suppose you must be a servant of the Thorned Queen. Here then, i hope we do not meet again, though i thank you for your service all the same." I return to the root and tree, set the bar aside, then move to walk down the saltwater path. I still needed a way stitch the shadow back to flesh. The steel would call it, and the blue fire would guide. I needed only *thread* in whatever form that took.”

True names have power, smith. I wondered why you demanded no payment, though I suppose you serve the Thorned Queen. Here, then. I hope we do not meet again, but I thank you for your service.

Serve? I serve iron, oath, and the shape of things made true. Go, fae. Let the saltwater show you what thread can mend.

Veyka sets the cold-iron bar beside the anvil and returns through the forge’s red vault. The blue guide-fire bends toward the saltwater path as she passes.

At the circular hollow, the silver root still pins her shadow. Saltwater glimmers along the leftward trail, carrying a faint sheen like spun glass beneath its surface.

The steel will call it. The blue fire will guide. I need only thread.

Veyka walks the saltwater path. Behind her, the cold iron gives a single clear ring, and the shadow stretches free, following her beneath the blue fire.

At the path’s edge, silver strands rise from the dark water and wind around her shadow’s ankles, stitching its outline to her flesh. The connection settles whole and unbroken.

“With the salt water reflection binding my flesh to shadow, and the blue-fire guiding me home, i need only follow the path laid out by the ring of the now shatter cold iron bar. I walk down the last path. The one that smelled of hearth and home. Ideally, this would lead me free of the gauntlet and out back into the longhouse.”
