Shuckie lumbers after the Wizard into the corridor. The cell door and its slime-sheened threshold fall behind, replaced by damp stone, old salt, and a draft that tastes like rust.
The lantern steadies in the Wizard’s hand, throwing a thin gold pool over the floor. Ahead, a stairwell climbs into darkness, and every drip sounds too loud.

The Wizard
Stay close. If the marks on these walls wake, I would rather they notice me second.

Shuckie
The stair is narrower than the cell.
A black chalk charm lies abandoned where the corridor bends, half-melted by damp. The Wizard glances at it, then at Shuckie, as if reconsidering every fear they brought with them.

The Wizard
You do not behave like a haunt. You behave like... a dog.
From above comes a slow scrape, like nails on wet stone. The Wizard freezes at the foot of the stairs, lantern lifting, while Shuckie’s red eyes catch a faint seam of light under the archway ahead.

Escape the dungeon
“Shuckie tilts their head, sniffing for a scent. There might be another new friend in here.”
SUCCESS (Terrible Perception, rolled +2)

Shuckie lifts their muzzle and draws in the corridor’s cold breath. Under damp stone and old chalk, another scent rides the draft, sharp as wet wool and candle smoke.

Shuckie
Someone else is here.
The Wizard’s lantern trembles as they follow Shuckie’s stare toward the seam of light above. Their hand tightens on the glass, but they do not step away.

The Wizard
You smell it too? Good. Tell me if it moves.
A faint scrape answers from the stair, then stops. The charm on the floor gives off a dull, chalky gleam, as if something unseen has just noticed it.
The draft changes. It pulls upward now, thin and expectant, and the light under the arch widens by a finger’s breadth.

The Wizard
There is a door above us. If it opens, we move. If it does not...
“Shuckie tries to listen for what’s moving above, hoping it is a squirrel.”
SUCCESS (Terrible Perception, rolled +0)

Shuckie goes still, ears angling up the stair. The scrape above resolves into quick, furtive scratching, then a tiny skitter across stone.

Shuckie
A squirrel.
No, not quite. The sound is too light, too many little feet, and it carries a smell of fur, ash, and old incense in the draft.

The Wizard
You hear it. Whatever it is, it is coming down.
The chalk charm on the floor flickers hard once, and a crumb of white dust breaks loose from its edge.
Something small taps the underside of the arch above them, then pauses as if listening back.

The Wizard
If that opens, do not let it through first.
“It has to be a squirrel! Shuckie runs in a circle, their tail wagging furiously and barking with excitement.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Playfulness, rolled +1)

Shuckie whirls in a tight circle, paws skidding on wet stone, tail thumping the corridor air. The bark bursts out bright and eager, and the sound bounces up the stairwell like an invitation.

The Wizard
It really does sound like a dog.
Above them, the tiny scratching stops. The seam of light under the arch widens again, then wavers as if something on the other side has paused to listen.

The Wizard
That is not a squirrel, is it? No ordinary thing makes a wall answer back.
The Wizard lowers the lantern a fraction, peering down at the chalk charm and then up at Shuckie with raw, uncertain fascination.

The Wizard
You are either the best omen I have ever met, or the worst mistake in this corridor.
For a moment the stairwell holds still, all damp stone and candle smoke and the little white charm glowing on the floor between them.
“Shuckie licks the glowing charm.”
SUCCESS (Superb Health, rolled -3)

Shuckie leans in and laps the charm. The chalk is bitter and cold, and the faint glow snaps across their tongue like a spark.
The pulse jerks brighter, then gutters. White dust smears across Shuckie's muzzle, and the stone at the base of the stair gives a dry crack.

The Wizard
Did it just... answer you?
The charm skids a finger's breadth, dragging a thin line of light through the dust. Above, the seam of light under the arch drops shut with a heavy scrape.

The Wizard
No, no, wait. That door should not close from this side.
The stairwell goes darker at once, and a deeper draft rises from below the steps, carrying wet wool and old candle smoke up around Shuckie's paws.
“Shuckie scratches at their neck, wondering where the squirrel went.”

Shuckie scratches at their neck with a hind paw, then pauses, head tilting as if a squirrel might be hiding somewhere in the dark.

The Wizard
It is still just a dog... a very impossible dog.

The Wizard
If you are looking for something, I did not see it go past.
“Growing bored, Shuckie snorts and pants at the wizard and then tries to push the stick into the wizard's hand to throw.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Playfulness, rolled +0)

Shuckie huffs, then shoves the stick toward the Wizard with hopeful insistence. The point bumps their wrist, and the offer lands right in reach.

The Wizard
A fetch stick. In a dungeon.

The Wizard
You want me to throw it... now?
The Wizard takes the stick with careful fingers, glancing once at the smeared charm on the floor. Their shoulders loosen by a fraction.

The Wizard
Very well, then. If I toss it, you bring it back?
They give the stick a small test swing, more uncertain than playful, but the motion is real. The cold draft keeps climbing the stairs behind them.

The Wizard
I think I would like to see what sort of dog you are.
“YES! Shuckie cheers and fetches the stick clumsily but enthusiastically. The charm and es aping the dungeon forgotten for a game of fetch.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Playfulness, rolled -1)

Shuckie bounds after the stick and snatches it back in one clumsy, triumphant grab. The toy skitters, then settles under their paw as they huff with pleased urgency.
The Wizard gives a startled little laugh, stick reclaimed for only a heartbeat before they hold it up again, as if deciding whether to keep playing or keep pretending this is not happening.

The Wizard
There. See? You do understand a game.
They step back from the chalk smear, shoulders less rigid now, and flick the stick toward the dark stairs instead of the floor.

The Wizard
Fetch, then. If you can.
The offer hangs between them, warm and strange against the cold breath rising from below, and the corridor feels briefly like a place where trust could exist.

The Wizard
No omen should look this eager.
“Shuckie merrily fetches the stick, probably running to the corridor wall in its eagerness.”
SUCCESS (Good Athletics, rolled +0)

Shuckie rockets after the stick, paws skidding once on the damp stone, then they catch it and whirl hard toward the wall with it clamped proudly in their mouth.
Their shoulder bumps the corridor’s right side with a dull thud, and they bounce back in a spray of dust, still wagging like the impact was part of the game.

The Wizard
Careful... you are very committed to fetch.

The Wizard
That wall should not be the thing I am worried for.
The Wizard leans against the opposite wall, laughing under their breath, the dropped charm still smeared pale between them like an old scar.

The Wizard
All right. Again, but this time I would like the stick back in one piece.
Above them, the stairwell remains shut, and the cold draft keeps breathing up from below, patient and watchful while the little game continues.

“Shuckie shakes their fur from the sudden cold draft. "There's a squirrel under the stairs! I wanna chase it!" they bark with goofy smile.”
FAILURE (Terrible Perception, rolled -1)
Shuckie gives a hard shake, fur rippling, but the cold draft sliding up from below does not come from any squirrel. It skims past their nose like damp cellar breath, thin and wrong.

Shuckie
There's a squirrel under the stairs! I wanna chase it!
The corridor answers with a hollow rattle from beneath the stair lip. Dust spills down from the lowest step, and the open gap at the base seems smaller than before, as if the stairs have tightened around a hidden throat.

The Wizard
No. That is not a squirrel. Hold still, Shuckie.
The Wizard pushes off the wall and crouches by the smeared chalk charm, peering under the stairs. Their hand stops short, hovering over the cold seam where the draft breathes out.

The Wizard
Something is sealed under there, and it is pressing back.
From the dark below, the air thins to a hiss. The stairwell edge locks into a brittle scrape, and a narrow stone panel shifts half an inch, exposing only blackness and a smell of wet wool and old candle smoke.
“Shuckie sniffs at the seam under the stairs and asks if there is food for them hiding in there.”
FAILURE (Terrible Perception, rolled -1)

Shuckie lowers their muzzle to the seam and sniffs hard. The draft tastes wrong, all wet wool and dead candles, and not a crumb of food comes with it.

Shuckie
Food hiding in there?
The narrow panel answers with a faint scrape from the dark, then a dry clicking, like teeth tapping stone.

The Wizard
No. Whatever is inside, it hears you.
Dust trickles from the lowest step. The gap under the stairs stays half-open, but the black beyond it seems to pull inward, as if something there is drawing breath.

Shuckie
No food.

The Wizard
Back away from that seam, Shuckie. It is reacting to you.
A thin thread of candle smoke seeps out of the crack, and the old charm on the floor gives one tiny twitch toward the opening.
