Adventure of Nimity

The basement ends in mismatched doors, each leaking the same dim bedroom light. Behind every one, distant breathing rises and falls from the dark.

A family doctor stands among photographs of sleeping families, jars of ash, and marked pages that document a summoner's crime.

The doctor keeps their hands visible, though ink stains crawl beneath the fingernails. Every photograph shows a household asleep, faces turned toward unseen corners.

One door cracks open by itself. Beyond it waits a bedroom Nimity has never seen, yet its proportions and shadows press against an impossible recognition.

The breathing behind the other doors stops at once. In the sudden silence, something on the far side of the open doorway slowly inhales.

Nimity moves to the marked pages and studies the cramped entries beneath the doctor’s annotations. The ink has bled outward, as if the paper remembers being wet.

The scattered notes resolve into one account: the summoner copied familiar rooms from photographs, then called something through a sleeping family’s shared fear. The unfinished rite left the doorway hungry.

A loose page tears beneath Nimity’s fingers, leaving the crucial lower half exposed. A thin paper cut opens across their fingertip, and one dark drop stains the summoner’s final symbol.

The final readable line points toward the open bedroom: name no borrowed room, answer no familiar voice, and leave through the door that casts no shadow.
