Through the Breach and Beyond

Rachel Moss awakens on the apartment floor beneath a spreading ceiling stain. Stormwater drips through plaster, and the room tilts unpleasantly with the aftermath of bad food.

Beyond the cracked windows, overgrown streets disappear beneath rain and gray runoff. The barricade across the apartment entrance hangs split open, its furniture shifted inward.

A low groan rises through the stairwell, followed by another. Water drives infected bodies and loose debris against the building below, each impact shuddering through the old walls.

Her backpack and pocket knife remain within reach. The apartment offers familiar walls and scattered supplies, but the damaged entrance leaves no reliable delay.

Another scrape sounds outside the door. Rain taps the glass while the stairwell fills with wet, dragging movement, forcing the question of whether this place can still be defended.

Rachel Moss grips the nearest cabinet and drags it across the wet floor. Her shoulders strain as she shoves the cabinet and a toppled table into the broken entrance.

The furniture locks against the doorway, narrowing the gap to a dark, crooked seam. The effort costs her a sharp scrape across one palm, and the metal legs shriek against the floor.

For one breath, the apartment settles. Then several bodies slam into the stairwell wall below, answering the scrape with wet, stumbling impacts.

The repaired barrier holds under the first pressure. Rainwater threads beneath it, carrying grit and a dark leaf across the threshold.

From the other side comes a muffled moan, followed by fingers dragging over the outer wood. The apartment remains defensible, but the stairwell is now fully alerted.
