The crest in the village elder’s hands turns cold enough to frost his fingers. Blue fire reverses along the stair, climbing toward the open bronze doors behind them.

The Village Elder
It is retreating. The line is not leading us below anymore. Something beneath the palace has noticed us.
Dust sifts from the ceiling in pale curtains. The heartbeat comes again, slow and immense, sounding from inside the palace walls rather than beneath the stair.

The Village Elder
The buried witness is awake. By the old gods, it is awake.
For one breath, a vast scaled shadow crosses the stairwell, swallowing both figures in darkness. Nothing living stands there; only blue fire trembles across the stones.

The Village Elder
Do not follow that shadow blindly, Glenn. The king gave us leave to seek truth, not to wake whatever was sealed here.
Above, the bronze doors remain open toward the chamber where the crowned king and the Court wait. Below, the blue fire has reached the landing and now points upward, toward Glenn.

“The problem is I think something is already awake down here, I saw a scaled shadow crossing over there. *Glenn whispers hushingly to the Elder*”
SUCCESS (Great Diplomacy, rolled -1)

Glenn Magpie
Hush. Something is already awake down here. I saw a scaled shadow cross the stair.
Glenn’s whisper barely stirs the cold air, but the village elder hears every word. His frost-stiffened fingers tighten around the crest as the blue fire crawls past his boots.

The Village Elder
Then I believe you. But you must say it before the king, and accept that your warning now stands as testimony.
The concession costs Glenn more than reassurance. The village elder has placed his credibility beside Glenn’s, making retreat from the claim impossible when they return above.

The Village Elder
No more blind descent. We go upward and tell Aldren what woke beneath his throne, before it chooses to follow us.
The village elder turns toward the landing. The blue fire bends with him, no longer a trail into darkness but a trembling line aimed at the open bronze doors.
Behind the doors, distant courtly voices falter. The immense heartbeat sounds once more, and dust spills from the stair’s walls as the two witnesses begin their ascent.
“I will convince him that we need to go down there *Glenn hurries up as he goes past the Bronze doors.* Crowned king I have suspicion that something has awakened down there I witnessed a scaled shadow moving around I belive we must contain it at once!”
SUCCESS (Great Diplomacy, rolled +0)

Glenn Magpie
Crowned king, I suspect something has awakened below. I witnessed a scaled shadow moving there. We must contain it at once.
Glenn hurries through the bronze doors as he speaks. The blue fire follows at his heels, and the Court’s murmurs collapse into sudden silence.

The Crowned King
You saw a scaled shadow, and still you ask me to send you beneath my throne? What will you do if this thing follows your command instead of fearing it?

Glenn Magpie
The king is weighing my testimony against the danger of leaving the presence contained by chance.

The Village Elder
Majesty, I witnessed the shadow’s passage as well. If it wakes fully, the undercroft will not remain its prison.

The Crowned King
Then descend. You will have the elder, six guards, and my seal. But understand this, Glenn: if you call me into danger on uncertain testimony, your standing rests on what you bring back.
Aldren tears his signet from its chain and presses it into Glenn’s hand. The order is granted, but the king’s warning makes Glenn personally answerable for the descent.

“*Glenn Magpie leads the decent down into the undercroft* Be wary of any movement anything could be at play here folks! Let us hope it is not Necromancy in origin.”
SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled -1)

Glenn Magpie
Stay alert. Watch every wall and shadow for movement. Let us hope whatever woke below is not necromantic in origin.
Glenn leads the six guards and the village elder down the northern stair, Aldren’s seal warm in his palm. The guards move in disciplined pairs, armored in dark iron, while the village elder keeps the frost-marked crest close to his chest.
Royal Guards
By your command, we watch the stones, the doors, and one another.
The descent reaches the undercroft without resistance. Here, old pillars rise from black water, their carved crowns turned inward, and blue fire gathers along a sealed archway ahead.

The Village Elder
There is no corpse-stench, no grave dust. But those carvings are warding signs, and something has disturbed them recently.
Glenn’s scrutiny fixes the approach in his memory, but the effort costs precious time. He cannot yet tell whether the faint impressions in the dust belong to the shadow or to something that followed it.

The Village Elder
The seal is still holding. Whatever lies beyond has not crossed into the undercroft.
The guards form a watchful half-circle behind Glenn. Ahead, the blue fire crawls across the archway’s ancient runes, illuminating a narrow keyhole shaped like a dragon’s eye.
“This is it! the keyhole that is needed that blocks whatever is in there it...looks like a dragon's eye....So who put this in here, they should know what is in here that is cursed then!”
SUCCESS (Great Lore, rolled +1)

Glenn Magpie
This is it! The keyhole that blocks whatever is in there. It looks like a dragon’s eye. Whoever placed it must have known what curse they sealed away!
Glenn traces the runes around the keyhole without touching them. Their grammar is ancient but clear: the lock was made by the Dragonwardens, priests who bound the shadow beneath the palace after the beast became cursed.

Glenn Magpie
The curse was already upon Veyrath when they sealed it. The lock is a prison, not a summons.

The Village Elder
Then the old tale was wrong. The Dragonwardens did not protect the kingdom from a dragon’s curse. They imprisoned the cursed dragon beneath the throne.
A second inscription kindles beneath the eye: THE BLOOD-LINE SHALL OPEN WHAT THE WARDENS COULD NOT DESTROY. The blue fire turns toward the crest in the village elder’s hands.
Royal Guards
The seal answers the crest.
The dragon-eye keyhole opens like a vertical pupil, revealing a chamber beyond filled with motionless blue light. The prison has recognized its blood-marked witness, and the ancient warding begins to release.

“*Glenn get a spell shield ready to block whatever may try to lash out before he could see and or speak to it.*”
SUCCESS (Legendary Magic, rolled -1)

Glenn raises his arcane focus, and silent sigils unfold around him in layered rings. A translucent spell shield settles before his body, broad enough to catch any sudden lash from the opening prison.

Glenn Magpie
The shield is ready before the ward can strike.

The Village Elder
Good. Whatever waits beyond that eye will meet preparation, not panic.
The vertical pupil widens fully. Blue radiance pours across the undercroft, and the spell shield catches its first probing force with a deep, glasslike note.
Royal Guards
Shields up! Hold the formation around the mage and the elder.
Six guards lock their iron shields behind Glenn while the village elder braces beside the crest. Within the chamber, the blue light gathers into the outline of a vast scaled head, its unseen gaze fixed upon the blood-marked witness.
