Celia emerges from the eastern passage with the warm Dorr relic in hand, her shoulder bruised and the holy staff’s torn grip hanging loose. Seraphine waits beyond the stair, still and watchful.
Celia Graves
Seraphine, this belongs to your family. I give it back to you.
Seraphine accepts the relic in both gloved hands. Its warmth fades against her palms, and her guarded posture yields to solemn relief rather than fear.
Seraphine Dorr
I accept its burden, as my family should have done. Whatever it remembers, I will keep it from becoming another chain upon the living.
Celia returns to the wedding grounds. Music and conversation continue beneath the flowering arbors, while Maurice and Elianor turn from the feast to receive her.
Celia Graves
Congratulations, Maurice and Elianor. I am glad I could return before the celebration ended.
Veyra Sorn
When you continue your travels, ask me to come with you. I can help watch the darkness you seek, and I want to earn the road beside you.
Maurice gives Veyra a measured look, while Elianor’s smile softens. Beyond the garden, the old road waits under the evening light, and Veyra waits for Celia’s answer.
“I tell Veyra "I would be glad to travel with you, please meditate with me, so that the Death God can prepare you for the hardships we will face." I commune with the Death God, introducing Veyra as my ally and ask she be granted a gift that will aid her.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +1)
Celia Graves
I would be glad to travel with you. Please meditate with me, so the Death God can prepare you for the hardships we will face.
Veyra kneels opposite Celia beneath the fading garden light. The holy staff rests between them, its torn grip bound against the stone as both women quiet their breathing.
Veyra Sorn
Then I will meet the road as your ally, not as the creature I was made to be. I am ready.
Celia introduces Veyra to the Death God through the staff. Innate Spellcasting gives the prayer a living voice, while Arcana shapes the petition into a precise request for a useful gift.
The Cursed mark clouds Celia’s sensing with false echoes, but the holy staff anchors the communion. Her will and spellcraft cut through the distortion until the Death God answers.
A cool shadow settles over Veyra without harm. The gift enters her awareness: she can sense undead presence and the direction of an active deathly command, even when hidden.
Veyra Sorn
I can feel them now, faintly, beyond the living world. I will use this gift to guard our road and warn you before darkness reaches anyone.
“I ask Seraphine what binds her to the undead”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +1)
Celia Graves
Seraphine, what binds you to the undead?
Seraphine’s gloved fingers tighten around the returned relic. Celia’s Cursed mark clouds the question with false impressions, but Plague Lore separates inherited death-magic from the relic’s harmless memory.
Seraphine Dorr
My blood binds me. The Dorrs swore to guard this relic, and the oath outlived our bodies. When I died, it kept me standing until another guardian could be found.
The answer settles into clear shape. Seraphine is not commanded by the buried dead; her undeath is the lingering form of an ancestral vow tied to the relic and its guardianship.
Seraphine Dorr
The dead beneath the garden recognized that oath, but they did not control me. I remained because abandoning the relic would have exposed every grave it protected.
Seraphine lowers her gaze to the relic. Its warmth answers her without hunger, confirming the bond as guardianship rather than a deathly command.
