The golden joined-crescent mark spreads across the sealed arch, tracing a narrow outline through the stone. Pressure thickens the hall, pressing dust from the rafters.

Stand clear. The shrine is opening an older wound, and it may not distinguish witness from offering.

Stone grinds inward. Beyond it waits a black altar beneath a low vaulted chamber, its edges crowded with carved names worn pale by time.

There. Zelan Rosen. My name is beside yours, little sister. Someone carved us into this binding together.

The village witch leans toward a symbol beneath the names: two joined crescents pierced by a vertical stroke, surrounded by smaller, unfinished marks.

That central stroke is part of the unfinished binding. I have seen its shape in forbidden records, though never joined to living names.

The arch opens fully. Gold light spills across Zelan, her sister, and the witch, while the black altar remains untouched beyond the threshold, waiting.

Expose the price of the binding

“Is the threshold safe to enter”

NO, BUT (Unlikely, rolled 44)

The instant the golden light touches the threshold, the joined crescents flare white. A pressure like a closing fist drives dust outward and seals the passage with a translucent skin of frost.

No. The threshold is not safe. It would count the first foot across as an offering, and bind the rest to that sacrifice.

The black altar remains beyond reach, but its worn names ignite one by one. Beneath them, a hairline crack opens in the chamber wall, revealing stairs descending into blue darkness.

Then the shrine refuses the doorway, not the search. Look there, little sister. That descent was hidden until we stood together.

A cold draft rises from the stairwell, carrying the scent of wet stone and old incense. At its mouth, the same joined-crescent mark appears unfinished, missing its central stroke.

That is our safer path, though safe is a generous word. The missing stroke may show how to resist the binding before we approach the altar.

The frost holds across the threshold, barring entry without striking anyone. The newly revealed stairs remain open, descending beneath the shrine while the golden light slowly dims.
