The wandering swordsman keeps Elise close at his shoulder, guiding her backward toward a narrow servants’ stair. The sealed purse remains in her grasp, its black wax sigil unbroken.

The Steward

The Steward

Guards! Stop them! Seal every door to the servants’ stairs!

The steward plants himself across the main passage, burgundy coat bright beneath the chandeliers. Behind him, the jeweled nobles remain in the banquet hall, watching but not following.

The Wandering Swordsman

The Wandering Swordsman

Down the stairs. Stay beside me, and keep the purse hidden from wandering hands.

Boots thunder from two adjoining corridors. The musicians falter, then stop, leaving only shouted orders and the scrape of the swordsman’s heel against stone.

The Steward

The Steward

You are carrying evidence of the baron’s inquiry! Set it down, girl, and surrender quietly.

The stair door stands just behind Elise, narrow and unlatched. The swordsman reaches toward its iron ring while guards close in from the hall.

Elise follows the wandering swordsman through the narrow doorway, clutching the sealed purse close as the approaching boots thunder nearer. Her shoulder catches the iron ring, slowing her just enough.

The wandering swordsman slips down the first steps, but the stair door swings inward between them. The steward reaches it and braces one broad hand against the edge.

The Wandering Swordsman

The Wandering Swordsman

Keep moving, Elise. There is another way through the wall beneath the stairs.

The Steward

The Steward

You will not be led into the servants’ passages. Give me the purse, and this ends cleanly.

The door remains a handspan open. Beyond it, the wandering swordsman points down toward a dark, low-set service hatch under the staircase, its latch recently disturbed.

Elise

Elise

The hatch opens into a different passage.

The wandering swordsman disappears below the bend, unable to hold the door from that angle. The steward presses closer, while the hatch offers Elise a usable escape before the guards arrive.

Elise drops to one knee and pushes through the low service hatch, turning her shoulders to protect the sealed purse as the steward crowds the doorway behind her.

Her first step finds a slanted stack of empty casks. They shift beneath her weight, and she tumbles into the cramped recess instead of reaching the passage.

Elise

Elise

The hatch opens into a storeroom, not the passage.

The Steward

The Steward

There. You have trapped yourself. Hand over the purse.

The casks roll across the hatch mouth, wedging the little door half-shut. Elise can no longer crawl forward, while the steward’s hand reaches through the gap.

The Wandering Swordsman

The Wandering Swordsman

Elise, leave the hatch. Find the loose stone beneath the lowest cask and pull it free.

Dust sifts from the masonry as guards thunder past above. The steward braces himself against the jammed door, and the swordsman’s voice fades beyond the hidden wall.

“I loosen the stone and crawl through”

SUCCESS (Good Strength, rolled +1)

Elise finds the lowest cask by touch, wedges her fingers beneath the loosened stone, and pulls. Dust spills over her hands as the block shifts free.

A narrow opening yawns behind the masonry. Elise tucks the sealed purse beneath her arm, folds herself through, and crawls into a cool passage beyond.

The Steward

The Steward

Stop! Guards, below the stair! She has found the old passage!

The stone settles back behind Elise with a muted scrape, cutting off the steward's reaching hand and trapping his angry orders on the other side.

The passage slopes beneath the baron's foundations. Damp roots thread the ceiling, and a faint lantern glow shines ahead where the wandering swordsman waits.

The Wandering Swordsman

The Wandering Swordsman

There you are. Keep low, and come on. The guards will search the storerooms first.

Elise

Elise

The purse is still sealed beneath my arm.

“I follow along and ask "So what did you need me for anyways"”

Elise follows the wandering swordsman beneath the roots, keeping the sealed purse tucked beneath her arm. The lantern ahead throws pale gold across the damp stones.

Elise

Elise

So what did you need me for, anyways?

The Wandering Swordsman

The Wandering Swordsman

Because you were the only person in that hall I could trust to carry this without drawing a blade.

He slows beside a bricked archway and glances back at her. His expression stays guarded, but his voice loses some of its urgency.

The Wandering Swordsman

The Wandering Swordsman

The purse holds a fragment of the baron's correspondence. I need it delivered beyond his lands before dawn.

The Wandering Swordsman

The Wandering Swordsman

You looked overlooked, Elise. That was useful. More importantly, you noticed the seal and did not break it.

He lifts the lantern toward a narrow stair descending through the foundations. Somewhere above, muffled boots pass over the hidden stone, while the old passage remains quiet around them.

Elise

So what do we do now?

The Wandering Swordsman

The Wandering Swordsman

We descend, cross beneath the foundations, and reach the old mill road. From there, I will guide you to a safe hand beyond the baron’s borders.

He turns toward the narrow stair and raises the lantern. Its pale light reveals worn steps, root-choked cracks, and a faint draft carrying the smell of wet earth.

The Wandering Swordsman

The Wandering Swordsman

Keep the purse hidden. If anyone stops us below, say nothing about its seal or contents. Let me do the speaking.

The wandering swordsman descends carefully, one hand near his sword and the other shielding the lantern flame. Elise follows into the foundations’ deeper silence.

The Wandering Swordsman

The Wandering Swordsman

Once we reach the mill road, you can decide whether to continue with me. But if you do, there will be food waiting at the first village.

Below, the stair opens into a flooded stone corridor. The wandering swordsman steps aside, giving Elise room beside him as underground water whispers through the dark.

“"Ahh food" :D”

Elise

Elise

Ahh, food.

Her voice echoes softly through the flooded corridor. The wandering swordsman glances back, then continues along the narrow strip of dry stone beside the whispering water.

The Wandering Swordsman

The Wandering Swordsman

Aye. A proper village meal, not banquet scraps snatched beneath a baron’s nose.

He lifts the lantern toward the darkness ahead. Ripples catch the pale light, and the corridor’s damp chill gives way by degrees to the earthy scent of open ground.

The Wandering Swordsman

The Wandering Swordsman

There may be fresh bread, bean stew, and apples if the miller’s family has kept their stores well. You will not go hungry.

The wandering swordsman steps across a line of fallen stones and offers Elise his arm for balance, leaving the sealed purse safely tucked beneath her arm.

The Wandering Swordsman

The Wandering Swordsman

Come on, Elise. The old mill road is close, and supper is closer than it was a moment ago.

“Okay lets go!”

Elise

Okay, let’s go!

Elise steps onto the next stretch of dry stone, following the wandering swordsman deeper beneath the foundations. The corridor narrows around them.

Her boot lands on a slick, shifting slab. It tilts beneath her, and her balance gives way toward the black water beside the path.

The Wandering Swordsman

The Wandering Swordsman

Hold fast!

The wandering swordsman catches Elise’s arm and hauls her back, but the slab drops into the channel with a heavy splash. Water surges across the remaining stones.

The sealed purse stays tucked beneath Elise’s arm, though the old path ahead is now broken by rushing water. Across the channel, a low maintenance ledge disappears into darkness.

The Wandering Swordsman

The Wandering Swordsman

That way is our route now. We cannot cross here safely, so we will have to take the ledge and find where it rejoins the passage.

“Elise blushes "ah thanks"”

Elise steadies herself on the remaining stones, cheeks warming as the wandering swordsman’s grip keeps her safely away from the black water.

Elise

Elise

Ah, thanks.

The Wandering Swordsman

The Wandering Swordsman

No need to thank me yet. Save it for when we reach dry ground and a table full of supper.

He releases her arm only when her footing is secure, then raises the lantern toward the low maintenance ledge across the rushing channel.

The Wandering Swordsman

The Wandering Swordsman

Keep close. The ledge is narrow, but it should carry us around the break.

He steps onto the ledge and tests each foothold before advancing. Damp stone presses close on one side, while dark water hurries below.

The Wandering Swordsman

The Wandering Swordsman

That is it. One careful step at a time, Elise. The mill road waits beyond this old foundation.

“We reach safety”

Elise follows the wandering swordsman onto the maintenance ledge, keeping one hand against the damp wall and the sealed purse tight beneath her arm. The ledge bends around the flooded corridor.

Halfway around the bend, a foothold crumbles beneath Elise’s boot. She lurches outward, and her other foot crashes through a rotten section of the ledge.

The Wandering Swordsman

The Wandering Swordsman

Elise, freeze. Do not pull back.

The broken stone drops into the channel, leaving Elise straddling a widening gap. The rushing water claws at the ledge supports, shaking the remaining path beneath them.

Elise

Elise

The ledge will not hold my weight for another step.

The Wandering Swordsman

The Wandering Swordsman

I can reach you, but the wall braces are failing. Pass me the purse first, then crawl toward my hand.

He kneels and extends himself across the gap. Elise shifts the sealed purse toward him as another brace cracks, forcing them to abandon the ledge and find a safer route through the flooded foundations.

“I carefully follow along”

SUCCESS (Poor Agility, rolled +3)

Elise carefully follows the swordsman’s instructions, placing the sealed purse into his waiting hand before lowering herself onto the surviving stones.

The Wandering Swordsman

The Wandering Swordsman

That is it. Keep your weight low, and follow my hand.

She crawls steadily across the broken span, one palm against the wet wall and one knee testing each solid brace. The ledge holds long enough for her passage.

The Wandering Swordsman

The Wandering Swordsman

Good. You are across. Come toward me, slowly.

Elise reaches him, and he catches her forearm, drawing her onto a broader shelf of stone beyond the failing ledge. The rushing water fades behind them.

The Wandering Swordsman

The Wandering Swordsman

She kept her head when the stone gave way. That may carry us farther than luck.

He tucks the sealed purse beneath his cloak and raises the lantern. A dry archway opens ahead, leading toward a stair where cool night air moves through the foundations.

“"Oooh I see the way out" Elise jumps up and down”

FAILURE (Poor Agility, rolled +1)

Elise sees the pale opening and jumps up and down in eager celebration. The broad shelf shudders beneath her boots, and a loose stone skitters into the darkness below.

The Wandering Swordsman

The Wandering Swordsman

Elise, stop! This shelf is sound enough for walking, not dancing.

Her second landing cracks a thin seam through the shelf. Part of the outer lip breaks away, revealing a narrow stair cut into the foundation wall beneath it.

The Wandering Swordsman

The Wandering Swordsman

There. You found our proper way out, though I would have preferred a quieter discovery.

He catches Elise by the elbow and guides her toward the newly exposed stair. Cool night air drifts upward, carrying wet grass, chimney smoke, and the distant creak of a mill wheel.

The Wandering Swordsman

The Wandering Swordsman

No more jumping until we reach the road. Then we can celebrate with bread, stew, and every apple you can reasonably carry.

“"Oooh I see the way out" Elise jumps up and down”

FAILURE (Poor Agility, rolled +0)

The wandering swordsman guides Elise down the newly revealed stair. Each step is narrow and damp, but the stone beneath them feels more solid than the broken shelf.

The Wandering Swordsman

The Wandering Swordsman

That was a fortunate bit of enthusiasm, though I would rather not test the foundations again.

Below, the stair bends through a crack in the masonry. Night air strengthens, carrying wet grass and chimney smoke, while the distant mill wheel groans steadily.

Elise

Elise

The stair leads outside, and the stone is steady.

The Wandering Swordsman

The Wandering Swordsman

Nearly there. Keep one hand on the wall, and watch your footing until we reach the last step.

He descends ahead with the sealed purse hidden beneath his cloak, then pauses at the bottom. A crooked wooden door waits beneath an arch, its edges silvered by moonlight.

The Wandering Swordsman

The Wandering Swordsman

Once this opens, we are on the old mill road. Bread, stew, and apples are waiting beyond the dark.

SUCCESS (Poor Agility, rolled +2)

Elise

Elise

Oooh, I see the way out!

Elise jumps up and down on the narrow stair, her boots thudding against the damp stone. The movement makes the wooden door shudder in its frame, and a sharp twinge catches her ankle.

The Wandering Swordsman

The Wandering Swordsman

Careful! You have found the way out, but the whole foundation need not hear your celebration.

The thudding draws a faint answering bark from somewhere beyond the door. Moonlight slips through a gap in the warped boards, and cool night air brushes Elise’s face.

The Wandering Swordsman

The Wandering Swordsman

Still, you are right. This door opens onto the old mill road. Let us leave before your ankle complains louder than you do.

He lifts the iron latch and eases the crooked door outward. Wet grass gleams beneath the moon, while chimney smoke and the mill wheel’s groan welcome them into the open night.
