Alyce steps from the Moonlit Causeway toward lanterns strung across flowering boughs. Beyond them, a sprawling estate winds through silver-leafed halls, its terraces alive with pipes, drums, and dancing satyrs.

the Satyrs

the Satyrs

Welcome, traveler! Come, share our table and tell us what dream shaped you.

Overflowing platters pass from hand to hand, piled with jeweled fruit and steaming dishes. Then a satyr notices Alyce's human features, and the music falters into a hungry, expectant rhythm.

the Satyrs

the Satyrs

Human. Truly human. We have never tasted such a rarity.

Smiles sharpen around the feast. Satyrs close in with knives and hooked banquet tools, blocking the paths between silver pillars as platters overturn and the revel becomes a tightening ring.

A red-brown blur tears through the flowering growth. Rowan lands, a young adult woman with a lean build, russet-brown skin, wild auburn hair, and a weathered green cloak, among the revelers with a furious snarl, scattering tables and driving the nearest satyrs back from Alyce.

Rowan

Rowan

Behind me, Alyce! Keep moving, and do not let them pen you in!

Pipes shriek, drums thunder, and the estate erupts into desperate motion. Rowan holds the breach, but more satyrs spill from the lantern-lit halls, forcing Alyce to choose her next move.

Escape the satyr estate

Discover why Rowan knows Alyce

“Use your paint-staff to conjure a flock of blue, green, and violet spectrum-colored crows to peck at and distract as many Satyrs as possible.”

Alyce sweeps the Druidess Paint-Staff through the lanternlight. Blue, green, and violet paint-flames peel from its leaves, spiraling upward as a flock of spectral crows takes shape.

The crows plunge over the feast, their spectrum-colored wings flashing between pillars. They peck at satyr hats, sleeves, and banquet tools, scattering the tightening ring into startled clusters.

the Satyrs

the Satyrs

Get them off! Curse these painted birds!

Several satyrs swat at empty air while others duck beneath overturned platters. The spectral flock wheels and divides, keeping nearly every reveler watching its darting beaks instead of Alyce.

Rowan

Rowan

Good. Keep them turning, Alyce. I can make us a way through.

Rowan surges across the opening, driving the nearest satyrs away from the silver pillars. Her green cloak snaps behind her as the flock continues its bright, relentless distraction.

Rowan

Rowan

Now, Alyce. The way is clear.

“"But Rowan, why did you come back to save me? You told me to just go and leave you alone, even after I found your Grandmother's last words for you...Did you...come back for me? As a friend?"”

Alyce

But Rowan, why did you come back to save me? You told me to leave you alone, even after I found your grandmother's last words. Did you come back for me, as a friend?

The painted crows wheel overhead while the satyrs regroup beyond the scattered tables. Rowan stops with one hand braced against a silver pillar, her snarl fading into uneasy silence.

Rowan

Rowan

Yes. I came back for you. Not because you found her words, though that mattered. I came because you are my friend, Alyce.

Rowan's claws curl against the pillar, then slowly loosen. Around her, the spectral crows flash blue and violet through the lanternlight, holding the revelers' attention.

Rowan

Rowan

That is the cost of saying it aloud. You can call on me now, and I cannot pretend I am only passing through. I chose your side.

The confession leaves Rowan exposed, but it steadies her. She steps beside Alyce instead of ahead, shoulder nearly touching hers, and faces the shaken feast.

the Satyrs

the Satyrs

She chose you? Then the little huntress has found a pack. How touching. How inconvenient.

Channel a powerful tidal spell with the Staff to flood the chamber and push the Satyrs back enough for Alyce and Rowan to escape

“"Hey, you shouldn't talk to her like she's an animal, jerk. But hey, maybe you Satyrs all just need a little sobering up. This should do the trick."”

Alyce

Do not talk to her like she is an animal, jerk. Maybe you Satyrs need a little sobering up. This should do it.

Alyce thrusts the Druidess Paint-Staff into the feast stones. Her hyperactive focus scatters between too many possible spell-shapes, but the staff's painted leaves seize the wild thought and give it a channel.

Blue, green, and violet brilliance bursts outward as a tidal wave, flooding the lantern-lit chamber without drowning anyone. It sweeps tables aside and drives the Satyrs back from the silver pillars.

Rowan

Rowan

That is one way to clear a path. Move, Alyce!

The spectral crows dissolve into the surging water-light. The Satyrs stagger upright beyond the receding flood, blinking soberly as their hungry smiles vanish and confusion takes their place.

the Satyrs

the Satyrs

What spell was that? The revel is ruined!

The tide drains into glittering streams between the stones, leaving the way beyond the pillars open. In Alyce's hands, the Druidess Paint-Staff's violet leaf has split cleanly down its painted center, its magic spent for now.

“Use the opportunity to escape with Rowan.”

Alyce twists the Druidess Paint-Staff free as its painted leaves flare. The tidal spell streams around Rowan, opening a bright passage between the silver pillars.

The water-light surges outward, sweeping overturned tables aside and forcing the Satyrs back beneath the lanterns. Their tools clatter harmlessly across the stones.

Rowan

Rowan

There! Through the pillars, Alyce. Stay close to me!

Rowan seizes the opening and darts through, one hand extended behind her. Alyce follows as the receding magic leaves the estate's outer terrace clear.

They race beneath flowering boughs and out beyond the lantern-strung halls. Behind them, the Satyrs shout in confusion, but none crosses the fading tide.

Rowan

Rowan

We made it. Keep going until those lights disappear.

The estate slips behind dense flowering growth. Rowan slows only after its music becomes distant, while Alyce's staff dims, its split violet leaf hanging quiet.
