From the eastern arcade, a veiled shrine-keeper enters: a tall elderly elf woman in layered indigo robes, her silver-veined hands carrying a shallow bronze basin. Its rim bears the tablet’s hooked notch.

The basin rings once without contact. Above the well, the ancient sword pivots toward it, while the blue-white crystal over the buried seal remains flawless and still.

The ward has summoned a witness. I answer in its name, and bring the vessel by which the third threshold may be heard.

Lower that basin. Its emblem belongs to the Veiled Hollow, a forbidden order proscribed beneath this city’s oldest law.

The captain raises her hooked spear, but does not advance. Her soldiers keep the ring around the plaza, while Serrik remains outside the crystal-marked channel beside the fugitive.

The order was forbidden because its witnesses opened doors by listening. If the basin speaks to the ward, destroying it could be worse than letting it answer.

I heard no basin beneath the third threshold. But the thing below withdrew when the tablet left. Perhaps it is waiting for this.

✓ Quest Accepted

Keep control of the tablet and descent

“I ask the shrine-keeper to set the basin beside the tablet.”

SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +1)

The Basin Answers the Ward
Valra

Valra

Set the basin beside the tablet, so the ward may be heard without disturbing the seal.

The shrine-keeper studies Valra through her veil, then crosses the paving stones with measured steps. The captain’s spear remains raised, but no soldier blocks her path.

You ask for witness, not opening. That distinction preserves the city, for now.

She lowers the shallow bronze basin beside Serrik’s tablet, placing its hooked notch opposite the stone’s descending groove. Bronze meets paving stone with a soft, resonant note.

Serrik Vale

Serrik Vale

That sound is the same as beneath the third threshold. It is listening now.

The tablet’s blue line brightens, and a faint circle of frost forms between basin and stone. The sword tilts above the well, aligning all three marks without touching the completed seal.

the fugitive

Good. The vessel has joined the route, but the ward remains closed. Now we may learn what the third threshold heard.

“Is the ward testing Valra’s authority?”

NO (Likely, rolled 91)

The frost circle between basin and tablet contracts into three pale rings. None turns toward Valra; instead, each settles around the hooked notch and the descending stroke.

the shrine-keeper

the shrine-keeper

No. The ward does not test your authority. It tests whether the route remains true when witness, vessel, and mark stand together.

A low tone rises from the basin. The sword answers with a single chime, while the completed seal beneath the well stays untouched and silent.

Then Valra is not being judged as a ruler or bearer. The ward is verifying the path itself, and her presence only keeps its pattern coherent.

Serrik Vale

That matches what I heard below. It withdrew from the tablet, not from me. It wanted the missing witness, not obedience.

The basin’s inner surface clouds with frost, revealing three nested marks and a blank center. No image or command appears there, only a confirmation of alignment.

So the ward has recognized a valid testimony, not granted her authority. We proceed on evidence, and the prison remains closed.

“I claim the route and direct the descent”

SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled -1)

Valra extends her frost-marked hand over the basin and tablet, claiming the aligned route without touching either vessel. The sword lowers in answer.

The three nested marks unfold into a pale line beneath the paving stones. It passes around the completed seal, then descends toward the eastern cistern.

the shrine-keeper

The route accepts your direction. It will carry witness and vessel below without opening the prison.

A seam opens in the plaza stones beyond the channel, revealing narrow steps of blue crystal descending into darkness. The basin and tablet glow at their aligned ends.

the pursuer captain

Soldiers, hold the ring. No one crosses the seal. Valra directs the descent, and I will witness every threshold.

Serrik Vale

That is the passage I could not find. The ward has made its hidden way visible.

Then the route is claimed, and the testimony can follow it. The prison remains closed while its threshold yields.

Reach the third threshold and hear the ward's testimony
