The kobold quarters sit tucked behind stacked stone and tarred timber, warm with lamplight and close with the smell of herbs. Crone Vekra kneels over a low chest, folding dried leaves and rolled maps into a battered satchel.

Tragold steps inside, the day still clinging to his scales. Vekra pauses, then lifts her gaze, ancient eyes bright under a crown of silvered ridges.

Crone Vekra

Crone Vekra

There you are. I was beginning to think the city had swallowed you whole.

Crone Vekra

Crone Vekra

Tell me true, little scale, are you ready to carry the weight of your tribe's future on those small shoulders?

Tragold

Tragold

Her satchel is packed for travel, and the maps point northeast.

Vekra cinches the satchel shut and rests one claw on it, steady as a stone in a stream. Her expression softens, not unkind, but keen with expectation.

Crone Vekra

Crone Vekra

You do not need to answer quickly. Sit. Rest. Then tell me what the city has taught you today.

Tragold sits down as he is asked. "City is hard," he says. "Tragold helps fox, but then fox gets kicked out of city just because is fox. Then guard changes mind when Tragold speaks. And now captain wants Tragold's help."

Tragold lowers himself onto the mat with care, the room’s warmth settling around him like a blanket. Vekra keeps her seat by the chest, satchel in her lap, and waits without pressing.

Tragold

City is hard. Tragold helps fox, but then fox gets kicked out of city just because is fox. Then guard changes mind when Tragold speaks. And now captain wants Tragold's help.

Crone Vekra

Crone Vekra

A steady tongue for a small back. Good. He is learning where the city bends, and where it breaks.

Crone Vekra

Crone Vekra

That is the shape of it, yes. Cities wear laws like armor, but fear makes the straps too tight.

Crone Vekra

Crone Vekra

When you speak for someone others mistrust, you do more than spare that one soul. You show the law where its blindness lies.

Crone Vekra

Crone Vekra

Yet listen well, little scale. Do not confuse a fair word with a settled peace. The Patrol Captain's hesitation is a door, not a home.

Crone Vekra

Crone Vekra

Still, you did right to carry prayers before profit, and truth before suspicion. That is how a tribe survives among strangers.

Crone Vekra

Crone Vekra

Rest now. Then tell me, if the city's law grows crooked again, will you know the difference between warning it and serving it?

Tragold shrugs sadly. "Tragold not know," he admits. "But maybe... maybe city need outside eyes?"

Tragold does a small shrug. "Tragold not know," he admits. "But maybe... maybe city need outside eyes."

Crone Vekra

Crone Vekra

Her ears tilt, and her mouth creases with approval. "Yes. That is an outsider’s gift. You stand just beyond a city’s habits, and because of that, you see the seam where pride is stitched over fear."

Crone Vekra

Crone Vekra

"But hear the old warning in that gift. An outside eye can name a crooked line, yet it can also miss the hand that drew it. Watch the law, yes. Watch the people who wear it, too."

Vekra lifts the satchel from her lap and sets it against the chest. The lamp smoke wavers between them, soft as breath.

Crone Vekra

Crone Vekra

"A tribe survives by knowing when to bow, and when to look up without flinching. You did both today. That is not small work."

Crone Vekra

Crone Vekra

"When the Patrol Captain hesitates, remember her fear is not the same as her judgment. Fear narrows sight. Patience widens it."

She taps one claw against the satchel, then toward the mat, a quiet summons to rest in the warmth of the room.

Crone Vekra

Crone Vekra

"Tell me this, little scale. If the city asks you to keep its laws honest, what will you listen for first, the words spoken loudest, or the ones repeated in secret?"

"Tragold tries to listen for truth," he says after some thought. "Loudest not always right. But secrets not always wrong."

Tragold lowers his gaze, listening past the room's hush, as if the truth might be hiding in the pauses between words.

Tragold

Tragold

Loudest not always right. But secrets not always wrong.

Crone Vekra

Crone Vekra

Good. Then hear this, little scale. A secret is not a lie by itself, it is a thing waiting for its proper listener.

Crone Vekra

Crone Vekra

The city will teach you to distrust every hidden thing. Do not obey that lesson whole. Some prayers are folded for safety, like the slips in the shrine box.

Crone Vekra

Crone Vekra

But watch the hand that keeps the fold. If fear closes the fist, the law becomes a wall. If mercy opens it, the law becomes a door.

Vekra sets two fingers over Tragold's open palm, then turns his wrist so the room's lamp-light falls across it like a path.

Crone Vekra

Crone Vekra

That is your task now, not to hunt every hidden thing, but to learn which hidden things protect the weak, and which hide the weak from justice.

Crone Vekra

Crone Vekra

And there is another sign. If Captain Hestia speaks of fear again, do not treat it as weakness. Fear named aloud can be watched.

Her claw taps the mat once, and a small, folded prayer slip slips free from beneath her sleeve and rests between them, unremarked until now.

At first, Tragold is tempted to read what is on the paper, hut then he remembers the monk's lesson from the shrine. Sometimes to know another's prayer is to then carry a burden to heavy to bear. And so, he simply picks it up and hands it back to Vekra without reading it.

Tragold reaches for the prayer slip, then pauses at the first fold.

Tragold

Tragold

Some prayers are not mine to read.

He lifts it carefully and extends it back across the mat without opening it.

The slip brushes his claw, and a fine line of lamp soot smudges his fingertips.

Crone Vekra

Crone Vekra

Good. You know the weight before you claim it.

Crone Vekra

Crone Vekra

A reader may carry a message. A keeper carries the burden of what was never meant for them.

Vekra takes the slip back and lays it beside the satchel, her gaze steady on Tragold.

Crone Vekra

Crone Vekra

That is the hidden danger in your path, little scale, not that law is false, but that truth can become a cage when handled without mercy. Can you tell when to carry it, and when to leave it where it prays?

Tragold leaves Humid kobold quarters behind and arrives at the west arch.

Tragold nods slowly at the question. "Tragold hopes so." When he gazes out the door, he sees that night is approaching, and he rises to his feet. "Captain wants to meet Tragold tonight, so Tragold must go." He bows to Vekra respectfully. "Thank you, Crone Vekra for help."

The west arch stands under a bruised sky, its lanterns waking one by one as dusk leans in. Tragold arrives in time to see the patrol lines thinning and the city changing its face.

He straightens, gives Vekra a respectful bow, and answers her with quiet certainty. His words are simple, but they settle cleanly in the air between them.

Tragold

Tragold

Tragold hopes so.

At the doorway, he catches the first cool pull of night and rises to his feet. The movement is brisk, sure, and the soot on his fingers is still visible from the prayer slip.

Tragold

Tragold

Captain wants to meet Tragold tonight, so Tragold must go.

Vekra studies him a moment longer, then lets the words land like a lesson rather than a test. Her grip on the slip loosens, and the lamplight catches the folds as if they are old roads.

Crone Vekra

Crone Vekra

Go, then. A warning is not a wound unless you make it one.

Crone Vekra

Crone Vekra

You carry truth well, little scale. But remember, some doors open because fear is named, and some stay shut because no one dares name it.

Meet Captain Hestia at dusk

Tragold arrives where Captain Hestia asked him to meet her, and he doubles over, panting heavily. He'd been running to make it there on time. "Tragold sorry," he says between breaths. "Tragold went to meet with tribe. They outside city."

Then your delay is honest, and honesty can still serve duty.

Vekra takes one slow step closer, her gaze fixed on his heaving shoulders. The prayer slip shifts against her satchel as if it remembers the weight of hidden things.

If you are asked where you were, tell the truth plainly. But if you are asked what you have learned, do not answer like a guard. Answer like one who can smell fear under a law.

A protector who only shields the visible wound leaves the blade in the dark.

Beyond the arch, a patrol lantern passes and fades, while Vekra lifts her chin toward the city streets. Her words settle on Tragold like a road marked in ash.
