A short walk carries Maya, Nora, and Eli to a shuttered laundromat. Its intact glass doors are chained from within, and the dry back room offers darkness, dust, and a narrow place to breathe.
Eli lowers himself against a plastic laundry basket, clutching the antibiotics while his eyelids sag. Nora checks the rear door twice, then keeps her rifle angled toward Maya instead of the windows.

Eli
I can stay awake. Just give me a minute to check the bottle and read the label.
Eli turns the medicine over with trembling fingers. Beyond the laundromat, something scrapes along pavement, pauses, and drifts away without finding the sealed building.

Nora
You knew the roof, the stairwell, and the timing. That was not luck. Where are you headed?

Eli
West, Nora. She was already moving that way before we met. Maybe she knows something about New Hope.

Nora
New Hope is a rumor until we see walls. But the road west is less crowded than the highways, and I know a dry route through the old farm towns. We can talk before we leave.

Maya Gonzales
The scraping has stopped, but the laundromat still smells of dust and old detergent.
“I’ll listen for movement while Eli checks the medicine label.”
FAILURE (Great Perception, rolled -4)

Maya stills herself beside the darkened machines and listens while Eli turns the bottle beneath the weak light. The laundromat gives back every tiny sound in warped echoes.
A faint scrape seems to come from the front glass, then the rear door, then somewhere beneath the floor. Maya cannot fix its direction or tell whether it is moving closer.

Eli
The label says amoxicillin. Sealed, and not expired. That is what we need.

Nora
Do not trust the sound. This place throws it around. I am checking the chain and the windows together.
Nora shifts to the center of the room, keeping both exits in view instead of chasing the uncertain noise. Eli caps the bottle and tucks it inside his jacket.

Eli
The medicine is safe to carry. We should leave before daylight brings more traffic to the street.
The scraping fades again, leaving no reliable direction behind. Listening longer will not clarify the threat, but the bottle is secured and the back route remains ready.
“I lead everyone out the back route”
SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +0)

Maya unhooks the rear chain and guides Nora and Eli through the narrow service passage. The door opens onto a weed-choked alley screened from the street.

Nora
Quietly. Stay close, Eli, and keep the bottle covered.
Maya leads them between sagging fences and overturned bins, choosing packed dirt over loose gravel. Behind them, the laundromat remains sealed and silent.

Eli
I can keep up. The medicine is secure.
At the alley’s far end, Maya pauses beneath a broken awning and checks the cross street. No figures move there. She signals, and the others cross behind her.

Nora
You got us clear without drawing anything in. The farm route starts two blocks west.
They reach a weed-covered drainage path leading west beyond the buildings. Nora takes the rear, Eli walks between them, and Maya brings everyone safely onto the hidden route.
“I scout ahead while Nora guards Eli”
FAILURE (Great Perception, rolled -2)

Maya moves ahead along the drainage path, keeping low behind weeds and broken concrete. Nora stays with Eli, rifle ready, while the route narrows between rusted fencing and a steep ditch.
She reaches the bend without spotting the figures until a pale hand rises beyond the fence. A second shape shifts behind it, blocking the path back toward Nora and Eli.

Nora
Maya, stop. Do not bring them toward us.
Maya freezes short of the bend. The weeds conceal a narrow livestock gate beside the ditch, opening onto a sunken track that curves west around the blocked section.

Maya Gonzales
The gate gives us another way through.

Eli
Nora, I can follow wherever she points. Just keep them away from the bottle.
The scouting attempt has not cleared the main path, but it reveals a usable detour. Nora draws Eli back from the bend as the zombies scrape along the fence, leaving Maya the gate to open or abandon.
“I explain why the detour keeps Eli safest”
SUCCESS (Great Reasoning, rolled -2)

Maya Gonzales
The gate keeps Eli below the fence line and out of their reach. The ditch bends west, so we can pass without exposing the bottle or drawing them after us.
Maya points along the sunken track, then toward the fence where the zombies scrape and feel for an opening. The detour gives Eli cover while keeping the blocked bend between him and them.

Nora
She’s right. Eli stays below their sightline, and I can watch the fence while she checks the track.
Nora draws Eli toward the gate without arguing. Her attention remains divided between Maya’s route and the pale hands shifting beyond the rusted fence.

Eli
Then I’ll stay low and follow her exactly. The medicine won’t show above the ditch.
The explanation settles the route, but the time spent studying the angles leaves one detail uncertain: Maya cannot yet see whether the far side of the gate is clear.

Nora
Open it when you’re ready. I’ll keep Eli behind you, and we’ll move as soon as you confirm the track.

Get the group past the blocked bend
“I slip through first, checking the ditch for threats before waving them on.”
SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled +2)

Maya eases the livestock gate open and slips through first, keeping her shoulders below the fence line. The ditch is clear, its packed mud marked only by old hoofprints and windblown weeds.
She checks beneath the gate, the ditch’s western bend, and the shadows along the far bank. The zombies remain trapped behind the fence, their pale hands searching without finding a way through.

Maya Gonzales
The track is clear as far as I can see.
Maya raises one hand and waves Nora and Eli forward. Nora guides Eli through the opening, keeping his jacket closed over the medicine while she watches the fence.

Nora
Good. Keep moving west. I’ll close the gate behind us.
Eli ducks into the sunken track and follows Maya’s route. Nora pulls the gate shut without a clang, then joins them as the fence hides the zombies from view.

Eli
I’m through. The ditch really does keep us covered.
The three survivors move west along the concealed track, with Maya leading and Nora guarding the rear. Behind them, the blocked fence falls silent.
