The Chamber of Remembrance
Halwen
Halwen

Halwen lifts the ashwood staff and presses its iron-shod end against a loose foundation stone. A hidden seam opens beneath the altar, revealing a low stair descending into darkness.

The chamber below is narrow and cool, its walls lined with old votive plaques bearing names worn soft by centuries. A shallow basin waits at the center, reflecting Mara’s traveling flame.

Halwen

Halwen

Mara is not here, death-priest. Only her remembrance remains, entrusted to your keeping until the living road claims it.

Halwen descends first, her green mantle brushing the stone steps. She sets a round loaf, a water flask, and a small wooden cup beside the reflecting basin.

Halwen

Halwen

Eat, drink, and rest awhile. Remembrance asks more than carrying a flame. It asks that you keep the name from becoming weight without meaning.

Halwen

Halwen

Tell me what you were given, and what you believe Mara’s light requires of you. The chamber will keep silence while you speak.

Above, the crossing remains empty. Teren keeps the Last Lantern behind, the ash-wyrm guards Vaeroth’s bones in the Ashlands, and only Halwen accompanies Silas beneath the shrine.

✓ Quest Accepted

Secure Halwen’s practical guidance for both lights

“I know not what is required of me other than the destinations i must take both lights are in different directions.”

SUCCESS (Superb Diplomacy, rolled +0)

Silas Mori

Silas Mori

I know only the destinations you have given me. Mara’s lamp must travel east along the Lantern Road, and Vaeroth’s ember north upon the Cinderward Path.

Silas’s words settle among the old plaques. Mara’s flame reflects in the basin, while the ember’s warmth answers from beneath his scorched glove.

Halwen

Halwen

Then you know the first duty clearly: the lights cannot share one road. One carries remembrance toward the living, while the other bears a name toward the elder dead.

Halwen pours water into the wooden cup and breaks the loaf upon the stone beside it. The chamber’s silence feels attentive rather than empty.

Halwen

Halwen

Mara’s light requires witnesses, not haste. Let travelers see it and speak her name. Vaeroth’s ember requires fidelity, carried until the elder dead can receive what was forgotten.

Halwen

Halwen

You need not claim more knowledge than the roads have offered. Eat, drink, and keep both destinations plain within you. The meaning will not be lost by beginning with what you know.

Secure Halwen’s practical guidance for both lights

“Can i safely leave Vaeroth's light here whioe i journey east with Mara's light?”

NO (VeryUnlikely, rolled 66)

Halwen

Halwen

No, death-priest. Vaeroth’s ember cannot safely remain beneath this shrine while you bear Mara’s lamp eastward.

The basin’s reflection darkens around the ember’s answering glow. The old plaques give a soft, collective murmur, as though names disturbed in sleep have turned toward it.

Halwen

Halwen

This chamber shelters remembrance, but it does not receive the elder dead. Left here, the ember would cool into silence before the Cinderward Path could claim it.

Halwen reaches toward the basin without touching either light. A thin line of gold appears across the northern milestone’s reflection, then breaks apart beneath Mara’s steady flame.

Halwen

Halwen

Nor can another keeper carry it in your place. Vaeroth entrusted the fragment to your hand, and the road has marked that keeping.

Halwen

Halwen

The living light may travel by witness. The elder ember must travel by promise.

The wooden cup remains full beside the broken loaf. Above, the hidden stair waits beneath the altar, while the two lights continue to insist upon separate roads and one bearer.

✓ Quest Accepted

Learn the name erased from the shrine plaque

“Is there a way i can walk both the Latern Road to the east and Cinderward Path to the north at the same time so i do not need to choose who's soul i help?”

YES, BUT (VeryUnlikely, rolled 15)

Silas Mori

Silas Mori

Is there a way I can walk both roads at once, so I need not choose which soul I help?

The basin answers before silence can settle. Mara’s flame divides its reflection eastward, while Vaeroth’s ember draws a second golden line north, joining beneath the stone.

Halwen

Halwen

Yes, death-priest, but not by keeping to either road. The old paths meet again beneath the hill, where one bearer may serve both destinations.

The plaques tremble. Fine dust slips from their carved letters, and a hairline crack opens across the basin’s rim, leaking cold light onto the floor.

Halwen

Halwen

You must carry Mara east until the Lantern Road’s first witness, then turn north through the buried way. Both lights will travel with you, but the shrine will not remain whole.

The crack widens with a quiet stone groan. One corner of the chamber’s oldest plaque breaks free and falls beside the loaf, its name erased beneath the dust.

Halwen

Halwen

The road grants your duty, death-priest. In payment, this chamber loses a name, and the forgotten silence will follow until another living voice restores it.

“Tell me the lost name so i may carry it with me so it can be remembered”

Silas Mori

Tell me the lost name, Halwen. I will carry it with me, so another living voice may remember it.

Halwen studies the broken plaque, then places two fingers upon its dusted surface. The chamber’s cold light gathers around the erased letters.

Halwen

Halwen

It is called Edraven, the Keeper of Returning Fires. The name was worn from the world before any living tongue could preserve it.

The name passes through the chamber like a breath over still water. Mara’s flame steadies, and Vaeroth’s ember burns warmly beneath Silas’s scorched glove.

Halwen

Halwen

Speak it when you reach the elder dead, and speak it where the living gather. Edraven must be remembered in both directions, or the silence will claim its meaning.

Fine gold letters reappear across the fallen plaque: EDRAVEN. The dust retreats from each carved mark, leaving the recovered name clear beside the broken stone.

Halwen

Halwen

Now the chamber knows what you carry. Take the name with Mara’s light to the first witness, then bear all three memories north beneath the hill.
