Ulkesh Valen arrives beneath the vaulted gates of the High Guard Citadel. Elven nobles kneel in ordered rows before a royal decree suspended in dark, soundless flame.

The parchment bears the king’s seal, but its margins twist with discreet signs matching the priestly society’s mark on Ulkesh’s neck. No wind disturbs the black fire.

Several nobles lower their heads. Others exchange guarded glances as attendants rise, preparing to carry the command through the citadel and beyond its high walls.

Far above, behind carved balustrades, a shadowed figure watches from the gallery. A faint sigil glints at its sleeve, recalling the dark Lord’s former allies.

Ulkesh studies the gallery’s shadow, fixing his attention on the glinting sleeve while the black flame paints silver edges across its concealed sigil.

The angle reveals more: beneath the sleeve’s warding thread, the emblem bears the old covenant mark associated with the dark Lord’s former allies.

Ulkesh turns from the gallery and acknowledges the herald’s decree before the assembled houses. The soundless flame bends toward him, then steadies.

Below the balconies, quills begin scratching across parchment. Above, the watcher withdraws one pace into darkness, leaving the covenant mark visible for a final instant.

The watcher’s retreat stops. A gloved hand emerges from the gallery’s darkness, and the broken crown catches the flame’s reflection like a wounded star.

A thread of black light snaps between the watcher’s sleeve and the decree. The soundless flame gutters, and one royal seal splits cleanly down its center.

The nearest nobles recoil as the cracked seal drops onto the stone. Quills halt across the chamber, while the high guard’s sentries shift their hands toward their blades.

Ulkesh’s command cuts through the vaulted chamber. The black flame bends sharply toward the gallery, and the watcher’s concealment fractures like thin ice.

The hood falls back, revealing an aged elf with silver hair, one clouded eye, and a narrow scar crossing the priestly mark at his brow.

A backlash lashes from the split seal into Ulkesh’s neck-mark. Pain flashes beneath the tattoo, and a thin line of blood darkens his collar.

Ulkesh’s order rings beneath the vaulted ceiling. The high guard moves at once, shields locking as they cross the chamber and surround the gallery stairs.

Three armored elves reach Serath before he can withdraw. They bind his wrists with silver oath-cord and bring him down from the gallery, while the nobles retreat from his path.

The oath-cord flares once around Serath’s hands, accepting the seizure without breaking. The cracked royal seal lies between him and Ulkesh like a dark, divided eye.

The royal herald bows and gathers the testimony into a vellum record. He presses the split royal seal upon it, binding Serath’s words beneath crown and priestly witness.

Black flame crawls across the sealed vellum, locking the script in place. The magic answers Ulkesh’s neck-mark, and fresh blood slips beneath his collar.

The herald carries the sealed record to the citadel archivists. Around the chamber, nobles stare at the blood-darkened collar and understand that the testimony cannot be quietly erased.

The herald receives the order without hesitation. He turns toward the carved doors, raising the sealed decree so its black flame illuminates the chamber.

Attendants hurry into the citadel passages, carrying the command through waiting messengers. Horns answer from the outer towers, one after another, across the royal district.

Nobles who had kept their distance now approach the herald’s table, offering household seals and names for the muster roll. The obedient houses declare themselves.
