Adventure of Talon Vekadrin 1

The latch gives with a soft click, and the door swings inward. A cloaked silhouette fills the hall light, pausing just long enough to measure the room, the bed, the untouched cups, the too-neat cloak hook.

Talon Vekadrin stays pasted to the wall seam, one hand near his dagger, while the stranger crosses to the table and runs gloved fingers over the dustless boards, as if reading a trail only they can see.

From below, Maddie’s voice cuts through the floorboards. The stranger’s head turns once, sharp as a knife, then returns to the wall panel and its hidden seam.

Talon bursts out of the wall seam in a blur of cloth and steel, driving the stranger back from the table.

His dagger bites at the cloak and the stranger twists aside, hissing as they lose their balance and slam a hand to the doorframe.

The hidden compartment gapes open behind Talon, its dark mouth plain for anyone below to see.

Below, the floorboards creak under hurried movement, and Maddie’s boots start up the stairs.

Talon drives in again, low and fast, and the stranger gives ground with a sharp grunt. His dagger slips inside their guard and the room snaps quiet for a heartbeat.

The stranger staggers back from the table, one hand clamping hard to their side as dark fabric catches and pulls tight. They are still on their feet, but the hunger in their stance thins to caution.

Bootsteps hammer up the stairs below, closer now, and a fist pounds once at the room door.

The stranger flicks their gaze toward the seam in the wall, then back to Talon, measuring the room as if the secret itself has become a weapon.

Talon snatches the sheet and whips it high. It drops over the stranger’s head and shoulders in one white collapse, blinding their turn at the seam.

He is already moving. The thief slips past the table, shoulder brushing wood, and drives for the door while the room’s attention splits in two.

The stranger claws at the cloth, snarling under it, and the forced-open wall seam gapes beside them like a confession.

Below, Maddie’s pounding steps hit the landing. The handle jounces once under a fist from the hall, then stills as if someone there has heard the struggle inside.

Talon reaches the latch first, and the stranger’s blind grappling leaves the hidden compartment exposed to anyone who looks. For one hard beat, the escape route and the secret both lie in the same breath.

Talon leans in, brushes Maddie’s cheek with a quick kiss, and lets the moment do the work. Her breath catches, her guard breaks, and his hand is already free of her reach.

He slips past her shoulder as she turns, startled and half-asking his name, and the stairs swallow the sound behind him.

At the landing, Maddie wheels back toward the room, but Talon is gone into the lower shadows before she can gather her voice.

Down by the alley door, the inn’s dim spill of lantern light ends hard. Talon becomes a shape in the dark, then nothing the room can hold.

Behind him, the secret room stays exposed to Maddie and the stranger, but the thief himself is already elsewhere.
