For a brief moment, your force holds the crest of a large, run-down hill. Its long slope drops nearly two hundred feet into a ravine, where a river threads through the low ground.

Across the water, the opposing clan gathers in a sprawling mass of roughly fourteen hundred. Most carry farm tools, crude shields, or mismatched armor, while about five hundred sit mounted.

Only about a hundred riders appear skilled and heavily armored.

At the enemy front stands Cho Sios Wata, an older, broad-shouldered man in layered red and brown lamellar, his iron-gray hair bound high beneath a crested helm.

Archers, nock light arrows. Hold until the riders are committed.

Rows of bows rise behind rough stakes. Their archers spread along the bank, while mounted troops descend into the dip, testing the river crossings between both clans.

Hooves churn the shallows into brown water. The opposing line watches your ridge, uncertain whether the descent will become a charge, a feint, or the opening of battle.

✓ Quest Accepted

Survive the battle

“Once theyre mounted units cross too far to cross back quickly i send mounted archers to shoot them”

SUCCESS (Great Reasoning, rolled -1)

Across the River, Bows Rise

The enemy riders push deep into the shallows, spreading toward the far bank. Their horses labor through the brown current, and the retreating path narrows behind them.

Gnnamme Wasa signals. Mounted archers from his clan wheel out from the ridge, descend along a hidden shelf, and fan toward the river crossing.

Loose together. Aim for riders first.

The volley snaps across the water. Arrows strike exposed riders and horses; several enemy mounts rear, breaking the formation and blocking the quickest return.

Shields forward! Riders, turn by pairs. Do not bunch in the water!

A second volley follows before the order can spread. The mounted units are trapped beyond an easy crossing, forced to scramble for the opposite bank under fire.

The maneuver costs Gnnamme Wasa's archers their concealment. Enemy bowstrings answer from the stakes, and one of his riders takes an arrow through the upper arm, though the formation holds.

“I retire the injured unit to the back lines and medics. I send shield bearers and archers forward with composite and long bows to return fire”

FAILURE (Great Reasoning, rolled -1)

Across the River, Bows Rise

Gnnamme Wasa signals the injured riders back toward the ridge. They withdraw in staggered pairs, shielding the wounded archer while medics hurry forward with bandages and stretchers.

Shield bearers move down to cover the slope, raising mismatched boards against the answering arrows. Behind them, the clan archers advance with the composite and long bows already in their hands.

Forward by ranks. Return their fire, then shift left. Do not expose the wounded.

The formation reaches the lower shelf, but the enemy volley drives the shield line to a halt before it can reach effective range. Several bows answer late, their shafts falling short in the wind.

The retreating unit gets behind the ridge, yet the medics cannot cross the open slope safely. The wounded remain sheltered beneath shields while arrows stitch the ground around them.

They cannot advance. Keep the river riders moving, and break their archers before they find the crossing.

Through the gaps, Gnnamme Wasa's forward scouts glimpse a narrow dry cut along the shelf, leading toward the enemy stakes and the exposed flank of their archers.

“I hold our line out of range. I chant call winds to aid our ranged effort and hinder theirs”

SUCCESS (Mediocre Arcana, rolled +2)

Gnnamme Wasa holds the line on the lower shelf, keeping his forces beyond the enemy bows’ useful reach. He plants his spear and begins a measured chant.

The wind gathers around his purple-clad form, tugging banners and loose straps. A steady current carries his clan’s arrows farther while shoving against the opposing bowstrings.

His magic takes a concrete toll: each breath scrapes his throat raw, and the chant leaves his powerful frame briefly winded beneath the strain.

Loose on the rising gust. Shift left, keep the wounded covered!

The clan archers fire into the strengthened air. Their shafts cross the river in a tight storm, while enemy arrows wobble short or veer wide.

A wind caller! Brace the bows and close ranks. Do not waste volleys into that current.

The forward line remains safely out of range, and the enemy archers falter under the hostile gusts. Across the river, their exposed flank begins to buckle.

“I command they continue firing heavily and command for horns and drums to raise tempo, loudly”

SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +1)

Gnnamme Wasa

Keep firing heavily. Sound the horns and drums. Raise the tempo.

The command rolls along the lower shelf. Horns answer first, then deep drums, their pounding cadence joining the rushing wind and turning scattered volleys into one relentless rhythm.

You heard him! Loose by ranks, faster! Keep the wounded beneath the shields!

Bows bend and release in disciplined waves. The gust bears the clan arrows across the river, where they hammer shields, scatter bowmen, and drive the exposed flank away from its stakes.

Hold the bank! Close ranks around the archers! Riders, press the crossing and break their rhythm!

Enemy horns attempt an answering call, but the drums swallow it beneath their thunder. Mounted troops splash forward while frightened archers crouch behind their rough defenses.

The wind continues to scrape Gnnamme Wasa’s throat, yet his clan’s tempo holds. Their sustained fire pins the opposing archers and opens the riverbank for the next advance.

Break the enemy riders
