The client remains beneath the weak streetlamp as Roxanne stands beyond the alley mouth. Rain ticks against the pavement, and the three indistinct figures stay behind him in the alley.
He approaches only far enough to place a sealed envelope on the wet pavement, then stops with both hands visible. The envelope lands between them, untouched.
The Client
That is the payment you demanded, not a new offer. Fifty thousand dollars, sealed and ready.
The envelope’s paper darkens at the edges from the rain, but its seal remains intact. The client does not step closer or reach toward Roxanne.
The Client
You can take it and leave. Or come back with me and hear the details. I will not make that choice for you.
Behind him, the three figures pause in the alley’s amber gloom, accompanying the client but keeping their distance. The street beyond Roxanne remains open and quiet.
