Gutty steps out of the alley and onto wider streets of slick, dark stone. The tavern’s warmth falls away behind her, replaced by cold air and the hollow toll of a distant dawn bell.

Shutters sleep shut along the buildings, and thin mist clings low to the road. Moonlight flashes on puddles between uneven cobbles, turning the street ahead into a black ribbon.

The chapel note is still pressed close to her chest.

A lone lantern burns ahead beneath an archway, and beside it stands a cloaked sentry in gray mail, listening to the bell rather than the street.

The Watchman

The Watchman

Hold there. Dawn road is closed to drunks, thieves, and late wanderers.

He shifts his spear and studies Gutty in the pale light, not yet deciding whether she is trouble or merely small trouble.

Pass through the city gates at dawn

"Oh, that's fine. I have business at dawn, anyway. I can wait."

Oh, that is fine. I have business at dawn, anyway. I can wait.

Gutty keeps her voice light and stills herself by the lantern, but the watchman does not soften. His gaze drops to her chest, where the note is hidden, and then past her toward the dark street beyond.

The Watchman

The Watchman

Business can wait outside the gate. Inside, perhaps. Show me your warrant, or turn back.

His spear tip shifts aside just enough to reveal the archway behind him, where the road narrows into a guard lane. Beyond the public street, a side stair climbs toward the chapel quarter, half-screened by mist and stacked with crates.

Gutty Greenspot

Gutty Greenspot

The stair is open, but the gate lane is watched.

The Watchman

The Watchman

Unless you have papers, you will stand there until the bell finishes.

The silence presses harder around Gutty, broken only by the bell and the wet click of the watchman’s spear shaft. His own words leave a narrow opening, though, toward the chapel quarter’s side stair and the crates beneath it.

"Sure, I already said I can wait."

Sure, I already said I can wait.

Gutty lets the words land soft, and the tension in her shoulders eases by a fraction. The watchman’s spear lowers a little, not kindly, but enough to show he is listening instead of measuring.

The Watchman

The Watchman

Good. Then stand where I can see you, and do not fidget near that stair.

He keeps his eyes on her face now, not her chest. The lantern flame hisses in the damp, and the bell’s slow toll makes the street feel empty in all the wrong ways.

Gutty Greenspot

Gutty Greenspot

The stair is still there.

A thin ache stings Gutty’s side beneath her clothes as she holds her place. The watchman shifts his weight and glances toward the mist-choked lane beyond him, then back to her, as if deciding whether she is a nuisance or a woman on honest business.

The Watchman

The Watchman

You are calm for this hour. What trade brings you to chapel ground before dawn?

"A lord wishes to meet me there at dawn."

A lord expects me at the chapel at dawn.

The watchman’s brow tightens, then smooths. Gutty’s words settle on him like a coin on a still table, and the spear tip drops another careful inch.

The Watchman

The Watchman

A lord, is it? That is a finer errand than most folk carry in this hour.

He studies the sealed note at her chest, not reaching for it, only weighing the lie or truth of her face. The bell tolls again, dull and distant, and the street seems to listen with it.

The Watchman

The Watchman

If a lord sends you, then someone at the chapel will know your name. That eases my mind, if only a little.

Gutty Greenspot

Gutty Greenspot

The lantern light makes the stair look steeper.

The watchman gives a short breath that might almost be a laugh. His eyes flick toward the mist, then back to Gutty, and the silence around them grows thick enough to taste.

The Watchman

The Watchman

Then stand easy, girl. Tell me this lord's name, and I may keep my curiosity to myself.

"It was Lord Vane. He gave me this token..." Gutty shows the token as a sort of proof of what she is claiming.

It was Lord Vane. He gave me this token.

Gutty lifts the iron crescent into the lantern glow. The watchman’s eyes catch on it at once, and his whole posture shifts from fence-post rigid to alert and human.

The Watchman

The Watchman

Vane's mark. So the little goblin isn't bluffing.

He does not reach for the token. Instead, he steps aside half a pace, giving the stair a wary glance as if it now belongs to someone else.

The Watchman

The Watchman

Lord Vane, is it? Then you are expected. I know the crescent seal.

The Watchman

The Watchman

And I know this little sign too well to ignore. The chapel doors answer to it before dawn, when the bells are still asleep.

From somewhere above the stair, a shutter clicks shut. The watchman notices it too, and his smile thins into something more careful.

"Hm? Is something the matter?"

Gutty Greenspot

Hm? Is something the matter?

The Watchman

The Watchman

Something, yes. That shutter. It means eyes on the stair, or worse, in the lord's house.

The Watchman

The Watchman

He lowers his spear a fraction, then adds, quieter, I was not meant to speak of it, but the chapel keeps watchers before dawn.

The watchman's glance flicks upward again. The mist seems to swallow the street sound by sound, until even his boots on the stones feel too loud.

The Watchman

The Watchman

You carry Vane's sign, so I let you pass, but I would tread softly near those doors. They are listening tonight.

His warning lands with a strange kindness, and the lantern light shivers across Gutty's token as the stair waits in the silence.

The Watchman

The Watchman

Tell me true, goblin, are you sent straight to the chapel, or does some other business tug at your heels?

"Well, I was also asked to bring a sealed note, but it, too, takes me straight to the chapel."

Gutty Greenspot

Well, I am also carrying a sealed note, and it points me straight to the chapel too.

The Watchman

The Watchman

A sealed note, too. Vane is tangled deeper in this than he said.

The Watchman

The Watchman

That is a weightier errand than I guessed. Who placed it in your hand?

The watchman’s grip loosens on the spear. The lantern wind rattles once, and the mist presses closer around the stair.

Gutty Greenspot

Gutty Greenspot

The lock of this business feels newer than the door.

The Watchman

The Watchman

If it bears Lord Vane's seal, then you are bound for the chapel doors, not wandering for drink or coin. That is something.

The Watchman

The Watchman

Still, if the note is for the priests, I would know whether you mean to hand it over cleanly, or hide it until the right face asks.

"Lord Vane himself handed it to me, asked me to bring it to the chapel."

Lord Vane himself put this in my hands, and he told me to bring it to the chapel.

The watchman studies her a long moment, then his shoulders ease by a fraction. The spear stays lowered, but his grip loosens.

The Watchman

The Watchman

That changes the shape of it. If Vane entrusted you, then you are not some alley thief with a pretty lie.

Mist curls through the gap between them, and the lantern throws a weak, wavering stripe across the stair and the crates below it.

The Watchman

The Watchman

He does not hand his secrets out lightly. Tell me plain, girl, does the note go to the priests unopened?

Gutty keeps the note steady while the district around them falls unnaturally quiet, the silence pressing in from the shuttered windows above.

The Watchman

The Watchman

If you mean to deliver it cleanly, I can let the stair remain yours. If not, I need to know before the chapel hears trouble.

"Yes, he asked it to make it there untouched. No opening it."

Yes, he asks that it reach the chapel untouched. I do not open it.

The watchman lets out a slow breath. His spear dips another handspan, and the hard line in his jaw loosens as the answer lands cleanly.

The Watchman

The Watchman

Good. That is the sort of answer I wanted to hear.

He shifts aside from the stair, giving the narrow way a respectful berth, while the lantern light trembles across the wet stone and the stacked crates.

The Watchman

The Watchman

Few bring sealed messages at this hour and look so calm doing it. You work the rooms for coin, or is that confidence all your own?

The district stays hushed around them, but the silence no longer feels like a snare. It feels like a held breath, waiting for Gutty's answer.

"I'm a belly dancer, I charm crowds for coins, yes. Although I'd argue I was always this confident, even before doing that."

Gutty Greenspot

I charm crowds for coin, yes. I dance belly-first and smiling, and I'd say this confidence is mine even before the applause.

The Watchman

The Watchman

That sounds like a woman who knows her own footing. Better than most I see at dawn.

The watchman huffs a short laugh, not quite a guard's laugh and not quite a man's. The mist clings to his boots as his shoulders ease another notch.

The Watchman

The Watchman

A performer, then. That explains the poise. It does not explain why a performer comes to the chapel quarter with a sealed letter and a token of iron.

He studies Gutty a moment longer, not unkindly. The lantern makes bright seams along the wet stones, and the dark stair waits beside them like a mouth.

The Watchman

The Watchman

Still, I have seen worse messengers. If you mean to go on, keep your pace quiet and your eyes open.

Has dawn finally come?

YES, AND MORE (Likely, rolled 7)

A sudden, golden light spills over the rooftops, washing away the grey mist and revealing the stark, jagged silhouette of the Black Chapel looming just ahead. The dawn has arrived with a harsh, unforgiving clarity that leaves no shadow for Gutty to hide in.

Gutty Greenspot

Gutty Greenspot

The sun is up, and the streets are waking far too quickly for my liking.

The Watchman stiffens as the first bell of the chapel tolls, his friendly demeanor vanishing as he glances toward the now-visible windows of the surrounding district. He gestures urgently toward the stairs, his hand trembling slightly as he realizes they are no longer alone in the morning light.

Now that is it dawn, Gutty moves on to the chapel for her business.
