The Occultist

Flailet reaches a clearing where the trees lean inward like witnesses. Abandoned offerings rot beneath extinguished candles, their wax marked with fingerprints that do not match any visible hand.

Above the trampled earth, a narrow rift trembles without widening. From it comes a chorus of sleeping voices, countless murmurs layered together, though no sleepers lie anywhere in the woods.

An elderly woman stands among the offerings, thin beneath a black wool coat, with silver hair braided tightly against her skull. Ash darkens her lined face, and one eye is clouded white.

The Occultist

The Occultist

You came. Good. Please, tell me you brought what it has been calling for.

The voices fall silent for one breath. Then every unseen sleeper whispers the same word from inside the rift, too faint to understand, while the candles kindle with cold blue flames.

The Occultist

The Occultist

Do not stand so close to it. It has learned the shape of wanting, and it is listening for your answer.

“why should I trust it”

Flailet

Why should I trust it?

The Occultist

The Occultist

You should not. I was warning you, not persuading you. The thing beyond that rift has no covenant, only appetite.

The occultist lowers her gaze to the offerings. Her clouded eye reflects the blue flames, while the other watches Flailet with exhausted precision.

The Occultist

The Occultist

It imitates need because need opens doors. It promises answers, rescue, reunion, whatever shape makes a listener lean closer. Then it takes the answerer instead.

Flailet

Flailet

The warning is genuine, but the offerings and her presence bind her to the rift.

The Occultist

The Occultist

I brought it voices once. Names spoken by the dying. Since then, it has called through every dream I enter. I want it sealed, not fed.

The rift shudders. Cold blue fire bends toward the occultist, and the sleeping chorus resumes, now shaping a phrase that sounds unmistakably like a request.

“then why do u feed it”

Flailet

Flailet

Then why did you feed it?

The Occultist

The Occultist

Because it found my daughter’s voice. Not a memory, not an imitation I could dismiss. Her voice, begging from the dark, using words only she knew.

The occultist’s fingers tighten around the edge of her coat. The rift repeats the last word in a child’s cadence, and the blue flames lean toward Flailet instead.

The Occultist

The Occultist

I gave it names to make it listen. I thought a mouthful of dying voices might buy one answer, one proof that she was truly beyond reach.

The explanation settles into place with the cold logic of grief. Yet the offerings bear no names, only scraped marks, and the occultist’s answer leaves that detail unresolved.

The Occultist

The Occultist

I was wrong. It learned my grief, then wore it like a key. Now every voice it borrows sounds more like her.

The chorus resumes beneath the earth, softly counting. The occultist looks toward the offerings, but her attention has been drawn away from the rift’s trembling edge.

What if I told you I knew a friend who could bring her back?

The occultist freezes. For the first time, her gaze leaves the rift completely and fixes on Flailet, sharp with desperate attention rather than suspicion.

The Occultist

The Occultist

You know someone who can return the dead?

Flailet

Flailet

Her grief is genuine, and the promise has reached beneath her caution.

The blue flames straighten. Beneath the earth, the hidden chorus stops counting, as though the thing beyond the rift has recognized a more valuable bargain.

The Occultist

The Occultist

Then I will hear you. Tell me what your friend requires, and I will give it, if it brings my daughter home.

The occultist steps away from the offerings and toward Flailet, leaving the rift unwatched. Behind her, one candle gutters, and a child’s voice whispers from the crack, softly repeating the word home.

Flailet

All I would need is one piece of your daughter, a memory or a photograph.

The occultist’s hope falters into calculation. She reaches inside her coat and draws out a small, creased photograph, its edges softened by years of handling.

The Occultist

The Occultist

I have this. Her face, her name, the day it was taken. Is that enough?

Before the photograph can change hands, the rift pulls at it. The image pales, and the daughter’s face, that of a young woman with warm brown skin, dark wavy hair, and a narrow, thoughtful face blurs into the dark until only one detail remains: a distinctive ring around her left thumb.

The Occultist

The Occultist

No. No, that is not what she looked like. Give it back. Please.

The photograph does not tear, but its surface has gone cold and blank. On the back, beneath the faded date, fresh writing appears in a child’s cramped hand: The bell remembers.

The Occultist

The Occultist

There is an old bell tower beyond the eastern road. She hid there when she was frightened. If anything of her remains, it may be there.

I will bring her back. I promise.

The promise leaves Flailet and settles over the clearing. The blue flames bow toward her, while the occultist grips the photograph with both hands.

The Occultist

The Occultist

Then take it. Take whatever remains of her. Only do not let that thing wear her face again.

The photograph warms as it passes into Flailet's possession. The blank image slowly returns, but the daughter's face remains indistinct, marked only by the ring around her thumb.

The Occultist

The Occultist

The bell tower stands beyond the eastern road, past the drowned chapel. I have not gone there since she vanished.

The knowledge comes with a cost: the photograph reveals no date, no reliable likeness, and no proof whether the bell remembers the daughter or the rift's hungry imitation.

The Occultist

The Occultist

Go before it learns this promise too. I will keep the rift quiet as long as I can.

I go to the fae that I know and knock

The Rift Hears Wanting
the fae
The Fae

Flailet leaves the clearing with the photograph hidden against her body. The eastern road sinks through wet undergrowth, and the drowned chapel’s bell tolls once behind her, though no tower is visible.

By dusk, the road ends at a crooked woodland gate strung with pale feathers and tarnished keys. Beyond it stands the fae’s narrow house, its windows dark beneath a roof of black moss.

Flailet crosses the threshold and knocks. The sound travels inward rather than outward, stirring faint replies from somewhere below the floorboards.

The Fae

The Fae

You have brought a promise with you.

The door opens a handspan. A slender young adult fae stands behind it, neither man nor woman at first glance, with white-gold hair, ash-pale skin, and dark eyes reflecting no light.

The Fae

The Fae

Come inside, little hunger. Tell me whose dead you intend to trouble.

The photograph warms against Flailet’s body. From inside the house comes the delicate sound of a bell being touched, followed by a woman’s distant gasp.

Flailet

Flailet

I need a favor.

The words pass through the doorway and return altered, spoken once in Flailet’s voice from beneath the floorboards. The photograph turns cold against her body.

The Fae

The Fae

A favor is a door with no visible hinges. Step through, and you may find yourself somewhere else.

The fae opens the door wider. Candleless darkness fills the narrow hall, but the air smells of rain, old bells, and something sweetly decayed.

The Fae

The Fae

Very well. I will grant you the hearing you came to claim. Speak your favor, and I will answer plainly.

A thin pressure gathers behind Flailet’s eyes, draining the steadiness from her thoughts. The fae notices the hesitation and smiles without warmth.

The Fae

The Fae

Do not mistake the cost for refusal, little hunger. You have my attention, and for now, my word.

“you remember how I stopped the fairies from destroying your forest”

SUCCESS (Great Psychology, rolled +3)

The Fae

The memory crosses the threshold without words: scorched roots, frightened wings, and the moment Flailet turned the fairies away from the forest’s destruction. The fae’s smile disappears.

The Fae

The Fae

You remember. You stood between their little blades and my trees when every other creature fled.

The pressure behind Flailet’s eyes releases. The house exhales around her, and the darkness in the hall draws back from the doorway like a curtain obeying its keeper.

The Fae

The Fae

You did not merely save the forest. You gave it another season. That debt is older than your promise to the dead.

The fae lifts one pale hand. A hidden door appears beneath the stairwell, its wood swollen with rain and carved with the same ring seen on the daughter’s vanished photograph.

The Fae

The Fae

I will open the road to the bell tower for you. It will take you there before dawn, and the bell cannot hide what it remembers from my sight.

The door opens onto wet stone steps descending through blackness. From below, a woman’s voice whispers Flailet’s name, followed by a single clear bell note.

I need your potion to bring souls back to life.

The words descend the wet stairwell and return as a chorus of soft echoes. The bell below answers once, its note deepening the darkness around the steps.

The Fae

The Fae

Not a potion for flesh, little hunger. A draught for the soul, then. I have one, and I will give it to you.

The fae steps through the hidden doorway and draws a narrow black vial from beneath their coat. Pale gold liquid moves inside it without being shaken, casting a faint ring-shaped reflection across the walls.

The Fae

The Fae

One mouthful can call a soul toward its remains. It cannot command what answers, and it cannot make the dead innocent of what they became.

The fae places the sealed vial into Flailet’s hand. It is warm despite the cold stairwell, and something within it whispers once in the daughter’s voice.

The Fae

The Fae

Take it to the bell. Pour it beneath the tongue of the body, or onto the place where the soul last stood. Then listen when the bell remembers.

The Rift Hears Wanting

Flailet closes her fingers around the vial and climbs back through the hidden doorway. The fae remains beneath the stairwell, watching the ring-shaped reflection fade from the walls.

The Fae

The Fae

Do not spill it before the bell. The road will test whether you carry a soul’s summons or merely an imitation of one.

Outside, night has settled over the woodland gate. Pale feathers twist in the wind, and every tarnished key points east as Flailet follows the drowned road toward the tower.

Flailet

Flailet

The vial remains warm, and the whisper inside it has stopped.

The drowned chapel emerges from the mist with its windows submerged in black water. Beyond it, the bell tower leans above the trees, its upper stones lost in cloud.

The tower door stands open. Mud covers the threshold from the inside out, and a tarnished ring has been nailed to the wood, marked with the daughter’s distinctive symbol.

From high above, the bell gives a single muted tremor. Beneath it, something answers with three careful knocks from inside the tower.
