Adventure of Orien Thanebroken

The dry stair descends beneath House Veyr’s eastern wall. Orien holds the awakened charter, its ink casting pale light across each worn step, while Aldren follows as witness.

At the bottom, three drowned waystone symbols burn across the masonry. Water seeps through cracks around a sealed stone door, gathering in dark threads along the floor.

The eastern symbol brightens. Stone withdraws within the wall, revealing a narrow passage whose threshold is untouched by the rising water.

Across the passage lintel, old letters kindle one after another: Witness present, succession protected. Beneath them, a second seal remains dark and unbroken.

Behind them, water slips from the sealed door in a widening line. Ahead, the narrow passage descends into blue darkness, waiting beneath the inscription.

Orien enters the blue-lit passage and places his hand upon the dark seal. Cold stone warms beneath his palm, and the inked charter answers with a steady glow.

The seal opens without force. Its black surface parts into three silver reeds surrounding a crown, while clear writing rises across the threshold.

The inscription names the eastern foundation as a protected succession vault and records the bearer’s right to enter. Beyond it, blue light reveals a dry chamber beneath the flooded house.

A narrow stone shelf rises from the chamber floor. Upon it rests a bronze-bound tablet, three reed marks cut into its lid, beside a sealed glass vial of clear water.

Behind them, the opened doorway holds firm as water gathers along the stair. The chamber remains dry, its tablet and vial plainly revealed beneath the crown-and-reeds seal.

Aldren kneels beside the bronze-bound tablet. At Orien’s request, he lifts its lid, revealing pale script beneath the three reed marks and a narrow space for witnesses.

Using the chamber’s waxed stylus, Aldren copies each name and title onto the tablet: Orien Thanebroken, Aldren Veyr, and the charter witnesses preserved in the foundation roll.

The stylus snaps as Aldren finishes, its bronze tip scoring his palm. A dark bead touches the final line, and the tablet seals the writing beneath clear stone.

Orien holds the bronze-bound tablet beneath the chamber’s blue light and reads its pale inscription aloud before Aldren, his voice carrying through the dry vault.

The words settle over the stone chamber. As Orien finishes, the three reed marks brighten, and a second passage of script emerges beneath the recorded names.

The tablet seals again, preserving every line beneath its clear surface. The glass vial beside it fills with faint silver light, answering the spoken record.

Orien wraps the bronze-bound tablet in a fold of his rain-darkened cloak and secures it against his side, keeping the clear inscription protected beneath the cloth.

The tablet’s bronze corner catches the cut in his palm as he tightens the binding. Fresh blood marks the cloth, but the record remains firmly secured.

Aldren lifts the glass vial and returns it to the stone shelf, leaving the foundation water within the vault. He gathers the waxed stylus and broken bronze tip.

The blue chamber dims behind Orien as he turns toward the threshold. Water continues pressing through the outer stair, and the tablet rests secured beneath his cloak.

Orien follows Aldren up the narrow passage, the bronze-bound tablet secured beneath his cloak. Water advances along the outer stair, but the protected threshold remains dry.

The blue chamber recedes into darkness. As Orien and Aldren pass beneath the lintel, the stone door settles shut, sealing the vault against the pressing water.

They climb together. A deep fracture sounds below, and the stair shudders, yet the passage bears them safely toward the archive’s lantern glow.

Orien reaches the archive threshold before the eastern foundation gives way. Dust sifts from the ceiling as the stair behind them groans and collapses from view.
