The stalled truck groans as buried cables awaken beneath the pavement. A municipal emergency siren coughs once, then climbs into a rising alarm that rolls through the ruins.
Steam thins around the wreck. The Strange Man stands beside the rear frame with the sealed records crate secured against him and the M107A1 ready in his right hand.

Rusk Bell
That siren belongs to Bell Salvage territory. Put the crate down, stranger, and nobody makes this street worse.
Rusk Bell emerges at the far end of the street, masked and broad-shouldered, with several scavengers spreading behind rusted cars and collapsed storefronts.

Rusk Bell
You brought Horizon's attention here. Their people will hear that alarm, and every opportunist within a mile will come running.
Behind The Strange Man, the surviving mercenaries remain scattered around the disabled convoy, too frightened to approach. The foreman watches from cover while the siren exposes the records' survival.
Far beyond the street, engines answer through the gray ruins. Rusk's scavengers tighten their grips, waiting to see whether the masked carrier moves, speaks, or stands his ground.
“The Strange Man continues to approach Bell, and the two end up nearly face-to-face, though with the Strange Man being significantly taller.”
FAILURE (Terrible Agility, rolled +1)

The Strange Man advances through thinning steam, the records crate braced against him and the M107A1 held low but ready. Rusk’s scavengers tense around the street.

Rusk Bell
Hold there.
The Strange Man keeps coming. Rusk retreats one measured step, then another, until the scavengers close around him and a rusted car blocks the direct approach.

Rusk Bell
You are close enough. One more step, and every rifle here points at that crate.
For a breath, they stand nearly face-to-face, Rusk forced to tilt his masked head back. The barricade and armed ring keep the final distance intact.

Rusk Bell
The street is sealed, but the salvage office behind me has a service door. It opens onto the old rail cut, away from the alarm.
Rusk shifts aside just enough to reveal the chained office entrance and the narrow rail cut beyond it. The advance stops at the barricade, but another route now lies open.

Escape Bell Salvage territory with the records
“The Strange Man takes just one more step.”
FAILURE (Terrible Agility, rolled -2)

The Strange Man takes one more step toward the barricade, crate braced against him and the M107A1 steady in his right hand.
The scavengers snap their rifles up. Rusted bumpers and packed bodies halt his advance, leaving no clear path to Rusk Bell.

The Strange Man
The M107A1 cracks once. A lookout behind the nearest car is struck and drops from view, his rifle clattering against the pavement.

Rusk Bell
Down! Keep the office door covered!
The ring breaks inward instead of charging. Scavengers crouch behind the cars, and Rusk reaches back for the chained service entrance.

Rusk Bell
You have made your point. The barricade stays between us, but the rail cut is still open.
“"Your men are weak. You cannot even uphold your own word." The strange man pushes the barricade over and steps right up to Bell.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled +3)

The Strange Man
Your men are weak. You cannot even uphold your own word.
The Strange Man drives his shoulder into the barricade. Rusted bumpers and loose metal fold across the pavement, scattering the scavengers from their cover.
He steps through the wreckage with the records crate secured and the M107A1 held ready. The armed ring gives way, leaving him directly before Rusk Bell.

Rusk Bell
You wanted the distance gone. Now it is gone.
Rusk stands against the service office doorway, his mask inches below The Strange Man’s covered face. Behind him, the chained entrance hangs open toward the rail cut.

Rusk Bell
Lower that rifle, and the rail cut is yours. Keep it raised, and this becomes a reckoning.
Director's note
Horizon's mercenaries take advantage of the moment and open up on the Strange Man once again

The M107A1 rises between the two masked figures. The single shot cracks through the office doorway, and the lookout disappears behind the nearest wrecked car.
For one stunned instant, every scavenger freezes. Then the surviving Horizon mercenaries exploit the confusion, firing from the disabled convoy toward The Strange Man.

Rusk Bell
Inside, now! The rail cut is the only cover!
Rounds hammer the barricade and office frame. Rust flakes and splinters burst across the narrow space as Rusk throws himself through the chained doorway.

the mercenary foreman
Keep firing! Do not let him take the records!
The mercenaries spread around the stalled truck, using its ruined body as cover. Their shots pin the entrance while smoke crawls low across the pavement.
The rail cut yawns beyond Rusk, dark between collapsed walls. The office door remains open, but crossing to it means passing through the renewed fire.
“The Strange Man turns to face the mercenaries, and holds his ground. He drops the crate next to him, causing it to break open and the contents to spill across the ground.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled -1)

The Strange Man turns from the office and faces the mercenaries directly. He holds his ground beneath the renewed fire, refusing the cover Rusk offered.
He drops the sealed records crate beside him. The impact splits its weakened boards, spilling folders, ledgers, and brittle data plates across the wet pavement.

the mercenary foreman
Protect the records! Shoot him away from the evidence!
The M107A1 rises once. Its shot catches the lookout behind the wrecked car, and the figure vanishes from view as the rifle clatters down.
The mercenaries answer immediately. Their rifles hammer the street, striking the disabled truck and chewing sparks from the pavement around The Strange Man.

Rusk Bell
You just scattered the reason they came! Get inside before they bury this whole street!
Records lie exposed between the wrecks, pages lifting in the muzzle blast. The mercenaries keep firing while Horizon’s foreman points toward the scattered evidence.
“The Strange Man continues taking out the mercenaries, hitting the foreman when it briefly peeks out from behind cover. However, the strange man takes a few hits, but it doesn't seem to faze him.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Marksmanship, rolled -2)
The Strange Man fires once. The lookout behind the wrecked car drops from view, his rifle striking the pavement as the street erupts with renewed gunfire.
The mercenaries seize the opening and fire together. Rounds strike his covered body and the pavement around him, but he remains upright beside the scattered records.

the mercenary foreman
Keep him off the evidence! Fire until he falls!
The foreman briefly exposes himself to direct the line. The M107A1 answers, striking him hard and knocking him back behind the disabled truck’s cover.
More rounds hit The Strange Man, bruising through his clothing and leaving fresh tears in the fabric. He absorbs the impacts without yielding ground.

Rusk Bell
You are hit. Take the office, or keep standing there until Horizon sends heavier guns.
The surviving mercenaries falter around the truck, their foreman down and their firing line broken. The records remain scattered at The Strange Man’s feet.
