The Village Headman

The hermitage gate bangs open. The village headman stumbles across the stone threshold, one sleeve dark with blood, clutching half of a carved oath-token.

The Village Headman

The Village Headman

The Oath of Brothers is broken. I broke it to preserve our master's last teaching. Please, I must reach the sealed inner door before they arrive.

Beyond him, hoofbeats strike the mountain path in a steady rhythm. Dust rises between the pines, and several riders are already climbing toward the gate.

The Robed Monk

The Robed Monk

You bring an oath-token split in two, and pursuers to my quiet door. Tell me, headman, why should these walls shelter you?

The Village Headman

The Village Headman

Because the teaching must survive me. If they take me, they will force the other half from its keeper, and everything ends.

The robed monk does not move aside. His gaze settles on lifeblood, then flicks toward the narrow passage leading to the sealed inner door.

The Robed Monk

The Robed Monk

The riders will reach us soon. If you intend to interfere, choose your manner quickly.

✓ Quest Accepted

Bring the headman to the inner sanctuary

“I take the headman through the narrow passage toward the sealed inner door.”

SUCCESS (Superb Strength, rolled +0)

The Village Headman

Lifeblood catches the headman by the uninjured arm and guides him into the narrow passage. Their shoulders brush rough stone as hoofbeats grow louder beyond the gate.

The Village Headman

The Village Headman

Keep low. The inner door is ahead, beneath the founder's carved hand.

Lifeblood moves with practiced silence, steering the stumbling headman around fallen prayer boards and a cracked brazier. Dust trembles from the ceiling with each approaching rider.

The Village Headman

The Village Headman

He reaches it. The teaching may yet endure.

At the passage's end, the sealed inner door fills the darkness, its iron bands cold and its central lock shaped like two separated halves of an oath-token.

The Village Headman

The Village Headman

We are here. Give me the other half, and I can open what my cowardice helped seal.

“do i know the monk”

NO, BUT (Unlikely, rolled 45)

lifeblood

lifeblood

I do not know this monk.

The monk's face offers no recognition, only a measured appraisal. Whatever reputation lifeblood carries, it has not reached this secluded gate.

The Robed Monk

The Robed Monk

Do not mistake my silence for trust. I have never heard your name, nor seen your face.

From outside, a rider shouts and reins scrape stone. The monk's eyes shift to the oath-token lock, then return to lifeblood.

The Robed Monk

The Robed Monk

But you moved the wounded man instead of abandoning him. That tells me more than a name would.

The Village Headman

The Village Headman

He has brought me here. Let him stand witness when the door opens.

The monk steps aside by one pace, revealing a narrow recess beside the lock, deep enough to hide one person from the passage.

“would it be possible to learn what the village headman new even a little bit right now and use my skill set to try to fend off just the first wave of attackers”

YES (Likely, rolled 50)

The recess gives lifeblood a clear view of the passage and the lock. The headman's shaking hand reveals a strip of ink beneath his sleeve, marked with the founder's first lesson.

The Village Headman

The Village Headman

The master taught that an oath has two edges. One binds the brothers. The other cuts whoever tries to hold it alone.

The words are barely spoken when boots strike the outer stones. A rider enters the gate, followed by two figures carrying hooked staffs and wrapped blades.

The Robed Monk

The Robed Monk

The first wave is small. Their confidence is not. If they pass this corridor, the inner door will never open.

The passage offers little room for a charge, but its fallen boards, cracked brazier, and low ceiling create obstacles an agile fighter can turn against the intruders.

The Village Headman

The Village Headman

They serve Master Vey's rival. Do not let the tall one reach me. He knows how to break a keeper's resolve.

The Robed Monk

The Robed Monk

Then watch closely, stranger. We will learn whether your tricks preserve the teaching or merely postpone its loss.

“use the teachings i just learned and all my unarmed master trait to get rip the weapons out of their hands and make it a fist fight”

Lifeblood slips from the recess as the first hooked staff sweeps toward him. He catches the shaft against his forearm, turns with its momentum, and drives an elbow into the wielder’s grip.

The weapon clatters across the stones. Lifeblood hooks the second attacker’s wrist, folds the arm against the low ceiling, and stamps the wrapped blade from his grasp.

The Tall Attacker

The Tall Attacker

Take him down before he reaches the keeper!

The tall attacker lunges bare-handed. Lifeblood pivots inside the charge, strips the man’s balance with a shoulder check, and sends him sprawling beside both abandoned weapons.

The second attacker catches lifeblood across the ribs during the exchange, leaving a sharp bruise, but lifeblood answers with a short body blow that drives him back.

The Robed Monk

The Robed Monk

Good. The lesson is not the weapon. It is the moment before the weapon becomes certain.

The hooked staffs and wrapped blades lie out of reach. The narrow passage now holds three fighters with empty hands, while the headman remains behind lifeblood at the sealed door.

“whould it be possible to reason with the attackers”

NO, BUT (Unlikely, rolled 45)

lifeblood

lifeblood

Lifeblood raises an open hand. “Stop. The door is sealed, and none of us leaves richer by breaking one another.”

The plea dies beneath the riders’ boots. The tall attacker wipes blood from his mouth and advances, while the other two spread just enough to deny the passage.

The Tall Attacker

The Tall Attacker

Save your bargains for the grave. The headman opens that door, or we drag the truth out of him.

The Robed Monk

The Robed Monk

They will not reason while their orders remain intact. But their formation has exposed what commands it.

A cord of red thread circles the tall attacker’s wrist, tied to a small bronze token. Each time he gestures, the other two glance toward it before moving.

The Village Headman

The Village Headman

That token carries their rival’s seal. Break their certainty, and you may divide the men without convincing them.

The attackers close again, but their attention is no longer unified. The bronze token hangs within reach beside the tall man’s clenched fist.

“use my stealth and hand to hand combat skills to move quickly and attack in a way that stuns the attacker for a long enuff time to use my lockpick to take off the bronze token”

FAILURE (Great Hand-to-Hand Combat, rolled -3)

Lifeblood slips toward the tall attacker’s blind side, using the cramped passage and the other men’s divided attention as cover. His hand snaps for the bronze token.

He strikes beneath the ribs, then turns the man toward the wall to steal a heartbeat. The blow staggers him, but does not stun him long enough.

The Tall Attacker

The Tall Attacker

Clever little rat.

Lifeblood’s lockpick finds the token’s fastening, but the tall attacker catches his wrist before the clasp gives way. The bronze token swings sharply between them.

The Robed Monk

The Robed Monk

The seal is guarded by his balance, not his strength. Take that away.

The tall attacker twists, forcing lifeblood against the stone and breaking the clean angle of his grip. One hooked staff skids closer as the other two men close around them.

The Tall Attacker

The Tall Attacker

Now you stand where I can see every trick.

“use as much strength as i can muster to get him off me so i can grab my dagger and stab him straight through the heart and take the token”

Lifeblood plants both feet against the stone and surges forward with all his strength. The tall attacker’s grip breaks, and the larger man crashes hard against the opposite wall.

The impact jars lifeblood’s bruised ribs, but his concealed dagger is already in hand. He drives it straight into the attacker’s chest before the man can recover.

The Tall Attacker

The Tall Attacker

You... cheated...

The tall attacker’s protest fades as his knees give way. Lifeblood withdraws the dagger and catches the red-threaded bronze token before it strikes the floor, though the motion leaves his injured ribs burning.

The two remaining men freeze around the fallen weapons. Their eyes jump from their leader to the token now clenched in lifeblood’s hand.

The Robed Monk

The Robed Monk

The seal is yours. So is the silence you have purchased. Decide quickly what it is worth.

The Village Headman

The Village Headman

That token commands them, but their courage is broken. Keep it raised, and I can open the door.

Lifeblood does not advance. He simply raises the bronze token and waits, its red thread trembling above the fallen leader. The two attackers remain rigid beside the scattered weapons.

The Robed Monk

The Robed Monk

Hold it higher. Let them remember whose order they obey.

The headman presses his half of the oath-token into the lock. Iron clicks within the sealed door, and a narrow seam opens, breathing out cold incense and dust.

The Village Headman

The Village Headman

Keep them still. I am going through.

He passes through the opening with one hand braced against the wall. Before disappearing inside, he takes the hidden strip of ink from his sleeve and carries it beyond the threshold.

The Remaining Attacker

The Remaining Attacker

That seal is not yours. We will remember your face.

Lifeblood keeps the token raised until the inner door closes behind the headman. The effort tightens his bruised ribs, and a fresh breath of pain gives the waiting men time to study him.

Lifeblood lowers the token slightly. “Your leader is gone, and the door is closed. Surrender, and help us protect what lies within.”

The remaining attackers exchange a wary glance. Without the tall man’s commands, their formation has become a choice rather than an order.

The Remaining Attacker

The Remaining Attacker

Protect it from whom? You took the seal, but you do not know what you are holding.

The second attacker nudges the scattered staff away with his heel, then raises both empty hands. His companion hesitates, studying the closed door.

The Second Attacker

The Second Attacker

We were told the keeper meant to betray Master Vey. If that was false, we have no reason to die for it.

The Remaining Attacker

The Remaining Attacker

Set down the token, and we will speak. Keep it raised, and we remain your prisoners.

The bargain hangs in the incense-cold passage. Their weapons stay on the stones, but their surrender depends on whether lifeblood can turn the stolen seal into proof of trust.

Director's note

not enough to seriously injure but make sure it will scar

Your leader is gone. I have no claim to his seal, and I will not kill you for obeying orders you now doubt.

The passage grows still. Lifeblood places the token on the floor between them and steps back, leaving his empty hands plainly visible.

The Remaining Attacker

The Remaining Attacker

You lower it, but you could still seize it again. Why should we believe this surrender is real?

lifeblood

lifeblood

Because I am putting down the only advantage I took from your leader. Speak plainly, and we can leave this corridor alive.

The Second Attacker

The Second Attacker

He was ordered to silence the keeper, not question him. Master Vey feared the teaching had been changed.

The remaining attacker studies the abandoned dagger, then the token on the stones. At last he lowers his hands and nods toward the sealed door.

The Remaining Attacker

The Remaining Attacker

Then we speak. The keeper is hiding the founder's final lesson, and Vey intends to claim it before dawn.
