The Barista twists the lock, then turns back from the door with the last of the café noise cut off behind them. The closed sign glows in the window like a verdict. Every head at the table feels the change at once.

Nobody leaves until we finish this.

Mara straightens in her seat, eyes fixed on Nia now, while Julian goes still beside her. Otto remains by the table, the lamp catching the edge of the receipt and the old photograph.

You do not understand what you are looking at.

The Barista sets both palms on the counter edge, grim and resolved, no longer a bystander. A couple of patrons lower their gazes and pretend not to listen.

Otto lets the silence hold a second longer, then waits on Nia’s answer without moving the receipt. The whole table stays pinned under the lamp’s small circle of light.

Nia

Nia

Mara

Mara

Nia

Nia

Nia

Nia

I locked the café because I needed everyone here long enough to hear the same version of this story.

The receipt with the second initials lies between them like proof she cannot ignore, and Nia finally loosens one hand from her defensive brace. The room waits for the part she has not said yet.
