Rain greets them at the inn step, cool after the steam-thick room. The canal district shines in broken ribbons of lamplight, and the clatter of boots softens into a measured walk.

Merrin tucks the black powder deeper into her satchel and glances sidelong at BonerFart, no longer hurried. Joe keeps pace a little behind, watching the water instead of the doors.

Garrick

Garrick

I had feared this part would feel like chains. It does not.

Steven

Steven

Then let it feel like work. Better work than waiting to be used.

Jeff

Jeff

And better with company. I can live with that.

Garrick gives a short grunt that might be a laugh. He looks from face to face, weighing them, and the hard set of his shoulders eases by a fraction.

Merrin

Merrin

We have a name, a trail, and a reason. That is more than most hunts ever get.

BonerFart

BonerFart

...

For a few steps, nobody speaks. The rain drums on the canal water, the city hums low around them, and the little company moves as if it has room to breathe at last.

✓ Quest Accepted

Find a way into Barack’s private chamber

BonerFart leaves Canal district street behind and arrives at Merrin's apothecary.

As we all head back to merrin's to regroup I take time to learn my group. I ask Steven about his skills in the shadows, if he is as keen as me or not? I reoutfit Joe to better handle himself as he looks weak and un able to fight. I have Garrick teach him how to fight better. I ask merrin and Joe what magic or casting ability they have. After educating myself to my crew we learn what Barack is planning and find a way to his private chambers.. carefully from the shadows

Merrin’s apothecary greets them with herb-bitter air and the soft crackle of drying bundles over a banked stove. Shelves of glass and mortar crowd the room, and the rain ticks faintly against the shutters.

BonerFart

BonerFart

Steven moves like a knife in a sleeve. I want to know how sharp that blade really is.

Steven

Steven

If you mean the shadows, I keep to them well enough. Not your kind of silent, perhaps, but useful.

BonerFart adjusts Joe’s gear with quick, practiced hands, shifting straps and weight until the man stands straighter and less exposed. Garrick watches, then demonstrates a few blunt but solid grips, making the lesson look simple instead of humiliating.

Joe

Joe

I had not thought my hands were meant for much of a fight.

Garrick

Garrick

Hands learn. Feet learn. Fear learns slower.

Merrin

Merrin

As for casting, I work little wards, drafts, poultices, and powders. Joe has no spark I can see, but he has a steady eye. Steven keeps his tricks close.

While they talk, Merrin spreads a charcoal sketch across the table, made from a page torn from an account book. It marks a servant stair, a sealed hall, and a private chamber tucked behind the records room, with fresh notes on which watch pattern passes when.

Merrin

Merrin

Barack is arranging a transfer tonight, ledgers, seals, and witnesses. If you go by the shadows, this route reaches his chamber cleanly.

BonerFart takes the sketch, the rain, and the hourglass of urgency and turns them into work. Coins change hands in the canal market for oilcloth wraps, a hooked chalk line, soft-soled boots, and a narrow belt sheath for Garrick. Steven watches the lanes while Merrin packs powders. Joe and Garrick trade positions and hands, learning how to move as one.

Garrick

Garrick

Wrist loose. Let the blade speak before your shoulders do.

Joe

Joe

And if the dark takes the path first?

Steven

Steven

Then you do not chase it. You make it step where you want.

BonerFart shows Steven how to disappear beside a shutter and leave a looped cord where an ankle will later find it. The trick is simple, cruel, and clean. Steven copies it once, then improves it with a grin that never reaches his eyes.

Merrin

Merrin

Joe, your hands are steadier than you think. Good for braces, good for seals, good for striking when the other fellow is busy looking elsewhere.

By the time the rain thins, the group looks less like scattered allies and more like a plan with arms. Their gear is sorted, their footing tested, and their breath quieted for the wait.

Two hours before the chosen hour, they settle into rest behind Merrin’s shuttered back room, listening to the canal water and the city above it. Then a hard knock lands at the front door, followed by a low voice asking for Merrin by name.

✓ Quest Accepted

Answer the knock at Merrin’s door

I gather everyone into a hush. I have merrin answer through the door that the shop is closed for the evening and to come back tomorrow unless its a medical emergency.. as Garrick and I ready ourselves for any threats on the other side of the door.. and as we wait for a response through the door i send Steven to find a vantage point or window to try to see who it is...

BonerFart lifts one finger, and the room falls silent at once. Merrin squares her shoulders and calls through the door that the shop is closed for the evening, unless this is a medical emergency.

Garrick shifts beside the table, blade low and ready. BonerFart and he angle themselves toward the front of the shop, listening for the reply.

Merrin

Merrin

Closed for the evening. Come back tomorrow, unless someone is dying.

A pause hangs on the other side of the wood, thin as wire. Steven moves off without a word, slipping toward the window line and the shutter gap.

The knock came from only one set of hands.

Joe eases closer to the front room, watching Merrin's face and the door together. Garrick plants his feet, ready for whatever answer reaches them.

Steven reaches his vantage and peeks out at the street beyond the glass, trying to catch the visitor before they speak again.

I say to merrin, demand to know who's knocking.. if no answer slightly jar the door enough to invite them in. I ready my bow, Garrick you be ready with dagger, pull them in the moment you see that door move and whoever is there will be met with blade and arrow less they cooperate. Now merrin, nice and smooth let's find out who it is. All others be ready for a fight and stay on point!..

Who knocks? Say your name, and what you want.

BonerFart sets his bow in hand and angles it toward the latch, steady as a trap laid in silence. Garrick mirrors the motion, dagger ready at his hip, while Merrin keeps her shoulders square to the door.

BonerFart gives the door a small, deliberate shake, just enough to invite a push. The latch rattles, and the wood answers with a thin creak.

Edrin Vale

Edrin Vale

It is only me. Open up, Merrin.

Merrin

Merrin

Not unless you give me your name and business.

A beat later, the visitor speaks again, this time from just outside the threshold, as if they have stepped closer to the seam of the door.

Edrin Vale

Edrin Vale

Tell her I bring Baron Halvek's seal, and the ward-key she asked for.

At the window, Steven stiffens and lifts two fingers in warning. Whatever stands outside is known to Merrin, and now it has named a path straight into the apothecary.

I tell Garrick to spring into action.. pull them in fast! I'll have an arrow over your shoulder ready if they resist. Then merrin, slam the door. Steven, be ready to handle another with them if they should be there.

BonerFart

Get them inside. I have the bow covered.

BonerFart keeps his arrow trained high over Garrick's shoulder, the drawn string creaking under strain. The visitor stumbles one step, seal case still in hand, while Steven turns from the window and reaches for the side entry.

BonerFart eases the visitor into a chair by the worktable, and Merrin keeps a hand near the lamp while the others hold the room. The seal case stays visible, untouched, like proof waiting to be opened.

Merrin

Merrin

Start with your name, and why Baron Halvek sends you to my door instead of sending soldiers.

Edrin Vale

Edrin Vale

I am a courier, not a fighter. Halvek wants the seal delivered cleanly, and the ward-key with it. He fears someone inside his own house is reading his orders.

BonerFart

BonerFart

The seal is meant to open more than one door.

BonerFart questions him hard on Barack, and the courier finally cracks the surface of composure. He names habits, not legends, a man who favors late dinners, keeps records in coded marginal notes, and trusts mirrors more than servants.

Edrin Vale

Edrin Vale

Barack watches entrances, but he hates being seen in reflected glass. He also keeps a bad temper for any mention of forged ledgers. If you press him, he covers it with politeness first.

Merrin

Merrin

And the wards? Tell me what opens, what resists, and what must never be touched.

Edrin Vale

Edrin Vale

The key answers old stone, sealed scripts, and half-broken protections. If it warms in your palm, stop. That means the ward is listening.

At last the courier sets two fingers on his own chest, then on the table, a quiet offer of honesty. He waits for BonerFart's judgment, ready either to join the hunt or walk away with the truth left in the room.

✓ Quest Accepted

Recruit the courier

I speak to Garrick silently while the courier speaks niceties with merrin.. i say I dont trust him and I feel this person is bad energy and everything they present is a lie. We must use all information to find OUR truth. This is going to get messy! Silently, tell the others to prepare. As Garrick prepares the rest I sit to talk with the courier to distract while the others get in place to begin the interrogation. From there we get ALL we need from the courier our way.. and move forward with action against Barack.

BonerFart folds into the chair beside the courier instead of looming, and that small shift loosens the room. His fingers tap once, low and unseen, a signal for the others to get ready.

BonerFart

BonerFart

He is watching every doorway, not just the table.

Merrin catches the signal and turns her attention to the seal case, while Garrick quietly shifts to the back corner, putting his bulk between the courier and the door.

BonerFart

BonerFart

I do not trust him. He feels wrong, and his story feels wrong. We use every scrap he brought, and we take our truth from it.

The courier’s polite mask tightens, but he does not bolt. Instead, he leans closer and, thinking BonerFart is only probing, starts answering in fuller detail than before.

Edrin Vale

Edrin Vale

Then ask cleanly. If you mean to strip lies away, I can tell you which seal marks Halvek’s private cipher, and which marks a decoy.

That gives BonerFart the edge he wants. The courier has already revealed the one thing Merrin needed most, a hidden distinction in the seal set, and now Garrick is in position while Steven watches the side entrance.

I have Garrick occupy the courier address I speak to merrin.. i say, i dont trust this one, in a way he knows too much and could sabotage our mission... do YOU know and trust this courier? Im of a mind where we neutralize this courier take all he has and get all the info we can.. im not one for fatal action if it can be avoided, but my gut tells me this one is no good.. I ask for your thoughts merrin. Garrick, Joe, Steven and the other all surround the courier until u give the order of what to do. Then I sit and lay it all out to the courier with all intentions on the table.. let the courier decide if he holds his life value or throw it all away, here and now...

BonerFart stays seated, but the room tightens around his words. Garrick moves at once, planting himself behind the courier's chair, while Joe and Steven close the other angles without drawing steel.

BonerFart

BonerFart

I do not trust him. He knows too much, and that makes him dangerous to this mission. Merrin, do you trust this courier?

Merrin

Merrin

Not yet. I trust the shape of his fear more than I trust his face. He is hiding something, but not all liars are enemies.

Edrin Vale

Edrin Vale

Fair enough. If you mean to strip me bare, do it now. I would rather answer under a hard gaze than vanish into a worse man's hands.

BonerFart lays the decision on the table without raising his voice, and the courier feels the weight of everyone watching. The seal case is nudged open, and the ward-key is set beside it for all to see.

Merrin

Merrin

He stays, for now. But if he lies again, I want his name, his route, and the first thing he hides from us.

Edrin Vale

Edrin Vale

Then I will spend what I know before the night spends me. I know the decoy mark, the true cipher, and the name of the clerk who paid for both.

The courier exhales, but the cost lands with a scrape of wood and metal as the ward-key is pushed into the center of the table. Outside, rain ticks softly on the shutters, and the room settles into a hard, listening silence.

I strip the courier of all that is offered and set merrin and the rest to finding out ALL the information withing. I then sit with the courier and speak plainly... I say, I want to let you leave here so that you may life your life and I dont leave hear with it on MY hands.. i I sincerely feel I can not trust you, and MY gut has never been wrong... as I position myself behing the courier I put 1 blade at their back, one blade at their throat... now I ask you why should I ignore my gut feeling and let you live? BonerFart

I want to let you leave here alive, and I do not want your blood on my hands. Tell me why I should ignore my gut and trust you.

Edrin Vale

Edrin Vale

He means it. That is worse, and better, than bluster.

Edrin Vale

Edrin Vale

Because I am not here to sell you out. I am here because I have already been hunted by the clerk I named, and because I know where the next seal ledger is copied.

Merrin mutters over the papers, matching dates, inks, and routes with quick, precise fingers. Joe and Steven lean in from opposite sides, trading quiet confirmations as they sort the courier’s story from the contents on the table.

Merrin

Merrin

He checks out against the watermarks. Not clean, but real enough. The clerk's hand is in these copies, and the courier is not lying about the route.

Garrick

Garrick

Then speak plain, courier. Who paid you, and what did they make you carry besides the seals?

Edrin Vale

Edrin Vale

A bundle of false routes, a wax impression for a private door, and a warning that anyone asking after Barack should be turned away or buried in paperwork.

I sit direct with the courier.. i say. Make your name and race known as I do not trust you one bit, nor does my crew. It seems we are at an impass as to what to do. You can join us and aid us to the fullest extent.. or I can follow my gut feeling about you and your intentions. The choice is yours... as I ready my blade as so does Garrick.

Edrin Vale

Edrin Vale

Edrin Vale. Human, by birth, though my mother would say canal-blood runs cleaner than bloodlines ever do. I am done being passed from hand to hand by men like Barack.

Garrick shifts his weight and brings his hand closer to his hilt. The motion is small, but it lands like a verdict in the quiet room.

Edrin Vale

Edrin Vale

I join you. Fully. I know the copy-house marks, the messenger loops, and the clerk who stamps the false ledgers. If you walk in blind, they will smell you before you reach the door.

Merrin

Merrin

Then he is useful, at least. And useful men are rarer than honest ones.

Edrin reaches for the ward-key pouch with careful fingers and sets it within BonerFart's reach, a quiet pledge sealed by the scrape of leather on wood. A bead of blood slips from the edge of BonerFart's nearer dagger where the blade has nicked his palm, just enough to sting and remind everyone how close the room is to violence.
