Docksend pushes out of Parrot Falls and into the humid night, the tavern noise fading behind him. Ahead, Thunder Head Dock stretches in creaking planks over black water, lanterns rocking in the salt wind.

Kaelen the Scout leads them down the pier with quick, sure steps. The distant thunder rolls again, low and heavy, while the harbor lies unnaturally still.

A moored sloop bobs at its rope, its hull slick with spray. Kaelen stops beside it and looks back at Docksend, measuring him in the lantern glow.

Kaelen the Scout

Kaelen the Scout

You handled that well enough in there. Now tell me, do you want trouble, or do you want a ship?

The Free-Black Sailor and Jorvan Vale are no longer in the tavern’s crush, only the pier, the ropes, and the waiting sloop. The storm mutters offshore, as if listening.

The sloop is ready to sail, and Kaelen is waiting for an answer.

Docksend hooks a boot on the rail and swings himself aboard, landing light on the wet deck. Kaelen shifts aside to give him room, one hand already on the line. Together they take the sloop from idle to ready, the rope singing through their grip.

Kaelen the Scout

Kaelen the Scout

Good. That is the kind of hand I can use.

A lantern sways overhead as Docksend helps haul the last slack free. The hull nudges the pier, then eases out a hair into the dark water.

Kaelen the Scout

Kaelen the Scout

If you stay aboard, you stay for the work, not the noise.

The harbor groans around them, but the sloop is moving now, and Kaelen keeps his eyes on Docksend, waiting for the answer that decides whether this is a ride or a crew.

I ask Kaelen what the work is

FAILURE (Fair Reasoning, rolled -1)

Kaelen the Scout

Docksend lifts his chin toward the dark water and asks what kind of work Kaelen means. His voice is easy, but the question lands plain between them.

Kaelen the Scout

Kaelen the Scout

The sort that keeps a ship fed and alive. Runs, watches, maps, a little honest theft if the odds favor it.

Kaelen lets the line slip through his fingers, not careless, just done with the cast-off. His gaze flicks once toward the pier they leave behind, then back to Docksend.

Kaelen the Scout

Kaelen the Scout

You moved in a brawl like you knew where the floor would break. That matters more than noise.

The sloop noses farther from the dock, and the lantern above them throws a short gold swing across wet boards. Kaelen’s mouth tightens, then eases.

Kaelen the Scout

Kaelen the Scout

If you want aboard, I need a hand that listens before it strikes. Show me that, and we can talk about plunder.

The pier slips a little farther astern. Kaelen leaves the offer hanging like a rope over water, waiting for Docksend to answer with action or leave it there.

I prove I can listen before I strike

SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled -1)

Docksend answers by not answering. He shifts his weight, lets the rail support him, and waits through the sway instead of filling it with words. The deck creaks, the lantern swings, and the silence holds long enough to mean something.

Kaelen studies him, then gives a small, approving nod. The test passes, but not cleanly. Docksend’s hand comes away from the rail with a fresh splinter in his palm, blood beading dark against the wood.

Kaelen the Scout

Kaelen the Scout

Good. You can learn the first rule aboard a working ship, stillness before steel.

Kaelen the Scout

Kaelen the Scout

I know men who swing first because they fear being seen. I need the opposite.

He glances past Docksend, toward the fading shape of the pier and the ruin left behind at the tavern. For a moment his calm looks older than the night.

Kaelen the Scout

Kaelen the Scout

That sailor in the room, the one demanding payment, he was never my concern. The debt was not mine to settle. The noise only told me who was willing to listen.

Docksend

Docksend

Kaelen is watching for discipline, not bravado.

Kaelen the Scout

Stay aboard, Docksend. We talk plunder once I know your hands can wait when they must.

I agree to stay aboard

Docksend

Docksend gives a short nod and stays aboard.

The sloop answers with a soft roll. Docksend’s injured hand closes around the splinter, and the tiny sting reminds him the deck is already demanding a price.

Kaelen the Scout

Kaelen the Scout

Good. Then listen close, not like a man hoping to talk over the tide.

Kaelen pushes off the rail and turns fully toward him, the harbor sliding slow behind his shoulder. The pier is now only a dark line, and the tavern lights sit far enough away to feel like another life.

Kaelen the Scout

Kaelen the Scout

Plunder is simple. People make it ugly. A partner keeps his feet, keeps his mouth when silence pays better, and knows when a job is worth the risk.

Kaelen the Scout

Kaelen the Scout

He watches Docksend’s bleeding palm, then the cutlass at his side, weighing both like tools.

Kaelen the Scout

Kaelen the Scout

If you stay, you sail for the haul I choose, and I do not haul in loud men. If that suits you, we can call this a pact.

The lantern swings once, throwing their shadows together across the deck, while the sloop keeps drifting into the harbor with no land in easy reach.

I listen for Kaelen's terms

SUCCESS (Fair Reasoning, rolled +1)

Kaelen lets the silence stretch just long enough to feel deliberate, then tips his chin toward the harbor lights. He speaks as if he is laying cards faceup, not making a speech.

Kaelen the Scout

Kaelen the Scout

My terms are plain. You listen when I say hold. You move when I say move. You do not freelance in the middle of a job.

Kaelen the Scout

Kaelen the Scout

In return, I choose the runs, split the haul fair, and keep your back clear when the sea turns mean.

The lantern above them swings once. Far behind, the pier is only a ragged line, and the old tavern glow barely survives the dark.

Kaelen the Scout

Kaelen the Scout

I want discipline because it keeps men alive. I want a partner because one pair of eyes misses less than one.

He glances at the splinter in Docksend’s hand, then at the cutlass at his hip, as though checking whether the man in front of him can truly keep still.

Kaelen the Scout

Kaelen the Scout

You listened. That matters more than swagger. If you are in, say it plain, and we sail with that understood.

I ask Kaelen what the first run is

Docksend

What is the first run?

Kaelen the Scout

Kaelen the Scout

A harbor skim, then a night sail past the reef lights. Small cargo, quick hands, no heroics.

He reaches for the lantern, takes it down, and the deck dims around them. The sloop’s wake whispers louder than the rigging.

Kaelen the Scout

Kaelen the Scout

You keep watch on the bow. If you spot trouble, you name it once and leave the rest to me.

Docksend’s fingers sting where the splinter bit deep, and a drop of blood marks the rail.

Kaelen the Scout

Kaelen the Scout

Good. That mark says you are paying attention. Come daylight, we take the barrel lot by the eastern buoy.

Docksend finds the bow’s dark edge and holds it. The harbor opens below, but the pier stays in sight, a thin bruise on the waterline.

Docksend

Docksend

A skiff cuts across the lane by the buoy.

He tracks it once, then farther out, where lantern specks mark the reef line and a heavier shape rides low in the tide.

Kaelen the Scout

Kaelen the Scout

You saw it. Say it clean.

Kaelen shifts from the lantern hook to Docksend’s shoulder, watching his face instead of the water.

Docksend

Skiff off the buoy. Low cargo. One lantern aboard.

Docksend keeps his gaze pinned on the low hull as it slides past the buoy. The craft’s heading stays true for now, but its lantern wobbles with the swell, and its wake stays thin and deliberate.

Docksend

Docksend

The cargo sits low, so it is carrying weight.

Kaelen follows Docksend’s line of sight, then gives a short nod toward the darker water beyond the skiff. The reef lights blink in a staggered chain, and the heavier shape out there does not break course.

Kaelen the Scout

Kaelen the Scout

There. That runner is headed for the reef line.

The sloop drifts another length off the pier, and the space between ship and shore grows final. Ahead, the skiff keeps on its route, while the bargelike shadow beyond it holds the same low, patient track.

Kaelen the Scout

Kaelen the Scout

If you stay with me, we take that kind of work. If you cannot, say it now.

Below them, the harbor lane opens cleanly to the sea, and the last of the pier slips aft.

What is the cargo?

Kaelen the Scout

Kaelen the Scout

Marked cloth, sealed ledgers, and one cask that is best not opened on deck.

Kaelen the Scout

Kaelen the Scout

He keeps his voice low, but the answer comes clean.

Kaelen lets the words hang between them, then taps two fingers against the rail, once, as if setting a count. The sloop rolls under his boots, and the reef lights blink on over his shoulder.

Kaelen the Scout

Kaelen the Scout

We lift it quiet, deliver it cleaner, and nobody on the dock gets paid enough to remember our faces.

A bead of blood from Docksend’s splinter darkens the wood by his hand. Kaelen notices it, but says nothing, watching to see if Docksend asks the next question.
