The Innkeeper

Alsōrivō arrives in Warfōsīh beneath rain-dark awnings, stepping into a crowded common room. A broad, middle-aged village blacksmith blocks the hearth, hammer clenched beside a fallen stranger.

Ēlbālis

Ēlbālis

Stay back. The dead man carried directions to my brother. I found him clutching them, and I will not let his trail vanish.

The stranger lies still near the hearth, face turned from the fire. Blood stains the floorboards, while silver and a sealed scrap of enchanted metal rest within easy reach.

The Innkeeper

The Innkeeper

You blocked my common room with a corpse and a hammer. Surrender him, smith, and explain why witnesses saw you standing over him.

The innkeeper with a wiry build, gray hair braided down her back, and a brass key ring at her belt, a sharp-faced elderly woman in a russet dress, points toward the door. Two sailors edge away from the body, watching the blacksmith's hands.

Ēlbālis

Ēlbālis

I did not kill him. He pressed that metal into my palm, then fell. His sibling is somewhere beyond this city, and these directions are all I have.

The Innkeeper

The Innkeeper

Then put down the hammer and let the watch decide what you have. No more reaching for silver, scraps, or excuses.

✓ Quest Accepted

Obtain the directions to the blacksmith's brother

Alsōrivō

You’re in luck. I’m one of the best hunters there is.

Alsōrivō’s claim cuts through the inn’s suspicion. Rain ticks against the shutters while the blacksmith studies him, hammer still clenched but no longer raised.

Ēlbālis

Ēlbālis

A hunter, then? You know how to read a trail through a crowded port, and find someone who does not wish to be found?

Ēlbālis

Ēlbālis

He speaks plainly, and he carries himself like a man accustomed to difficult roads.

The blacksmith lowers the hammer to his side. His guarded expression eases, and he steps away from the stranger’s body, an adult man in a mud-stained charcoal coat and travel-worn boots without touching the silver or enchanted metal.

Ēlbālis

Ēlbālis

Then I believe you. Help me follow these directions to my brother, and I will tell the watch you came to aid me.

The Innkeeper

The Innkeeper

Belief is not permission to turn my common room into a road camp. Keep your hands visible, both of you.

Director's note

Rifles through the dead man’s pockets

The Smith Beside the Corpse

Alsōrivō turns toward the blacksmith, then crouches beside the fallen stranger, an adult human man with a broad build, weathered hands, and a dark charcoal coat and travel-worn boots, his face turned away. With the innkeeper watching closely, he searches the dead man’s coat and trousers, keeping each movement deliberate.

The Innkeeper

The Innkeeper

Slowly. Let me see what you find, and nothing disappears into your sleeves.

The pockets yield a damp leather purse holding several silver pieces, a blunt brass key, and a narrow strip of blue-dyed cloth marked with a tiny stitched tower.

Ēlbālis

Ēlbālis

That tower is not on the directions. My brother worked near the northern dye warehouses, before he vanished.

Alsōrivō finds no blade or letter. Beneath the stranger’s inner lining, his fingers meet a hard, cold shape sewn into the seam.

The Innkeeper

The Innkeeper

A hidden pocket. Of course. Open it where I can see.

The seam parts under careful fingers, revealing a small iron token stamped with a blacksmith’s mark and one word scratched beneath it: Warden.

Director's note

Cuts the tolken out of the coat

“Well. Is this yours or your sibling’s?”

FAILURE (Mediocre Persuasion, rolled -1)

Alsōrivō

Alsōrivō

Well. Is this yours or your sibling’s?

The blacksmith’s eyes fix on the iron token, then flick toward the innkeeper. His jaw tightens as rain whispers against the shutters.

Ēlbālis

Ēlbālis

That mark belongs to our forge, but the token is neither mine nor anything I gave my brother.

His answer lands without certainty. He reaches halfway toward the token, then stops with both hands visible, honoring the innkeeper’s warning.

Ēlbālis

Ēlbālis

Warden was a title used by the old guild. If my brother carried this, he was not merely lost. He was involved.

The Innkeeper

The Innkeeper

Then stop guessing over a corpse. Put the token on the table, where everyone can see it, and tell me what this guild is.

The blacksmith steps back from the hearth and the body, leaving the token’s meaning exposed between them. The purse, key, cloth, and directions remain in view.

✓ Quest Accepted

Learn the Warden guild's connection to the blacksmith's brother

“Tell me. What do you know about this guild? It could potentially lead to your brother, so this only helps you.”

Tell me. What do you know about this guild? It could lead to your brother, so this only helps you.

The blacksmith studies Alsōrivō without blinking. His mouth tightens, and the room’s suspicion settles more heavily around the exposed token.

Ēlbālis

Ēlbālis

I know enough to distrust anyone asking beneath my brother’s name. The old Warden guild guarded enchanted objects, judged their keepers, and answered to no town watch.

Ēlbālis

Ēlbālis

Its records vanished when the guild was broken. My brother learned the surviving marks, then stopped speaking about them. I will not guess further and condemn him aloud.

The innkeeper reaches for a clean plate and indicates the table. The blacksmith places the iron token on it, withdrawing his hand before touching anything else.

The Innkeeper

The Innkeeper

Then the token stays in plain sight. No guild secrets, no private bargains, and no one leaves with evidence tucked away.

Ēlbālis

Ēlbālis

If you want my brother found, follow the blue tower first. I know no safer lead, and I will not discuss the Wardens here again.

Director's note

Takes the strip of fabric, examining it for any indication of where to go

“Ok.”

Alsōrivō turns toward the blacksmith, then returns to the fallen stranger. He rifles through the coat and trousers again, keeping the purse, key, and directions visible.

He lifts the iron token from the plate and cuts through the last threads clinging to its edge, separating it cleanly from the torn lining.

Ēlbālis

Ēlbālis

Careful with that mark. My forge made it, but I still cannot tell you who carried it.

Alsōrivō takes the blue-dyed strip and holds it near the hearthlight. The tiny stitched tower shows narrow walls, a pointed roof, and one dark mark at its base.

The Innkeeper

The Innkeeper

A tower is not a destination. Look for something that names a street, warehouse, or gate.

The cloth bears no words, but its dye is deep cobalt, unevenly soaked along one edge. A faint trace of pale dust clings to the stitching beneath the tower.

Ēlbālis

Ēlbālis

Northern dye warehouses use that color. If the mark means anything, begin there.

“Thank you”

Alsōrivō

Alsōrivō

Thank you.

Alsōrivō lowers the blue-dyed strip and returns his attention to the blacksmith. The token rests plainly on the plate, while the purse, key, and directions remain visible.

Ēlbālis

Ēlbālis

You are welcome. The northern dye warehouses are our best lead, and I will take you there once the innkeeper permits us to leave.

The Innkeeper

The Innkeeper

Keep the token and cloth in sight, settle the matter of the body, and then you may go.

Rain continues tapping the shutters. Around the hearth, the sailors, two adult men with sun-browned faces and wind-tangled hair in dark blue coats, ease their watch as the immediate search ends without further disturbance.

Ēlbālis

Ēlbālis

I will remember your help, hunter. If the blue tower leads to my brother, your trail will not be forgotten.

Alsōrivō

Ēlbālis, I do love your shop’s work.

The compliment reaches the blacksmith, but the crowded room and exposed evidence make it sound practiced rather than warm. His guarded expression returns, and his hand settles beside, not upon, the hammer.

Ēlbālis

Ēlbālis

My shop makes honest tools. Praise will not make this token clearer, hunter.

The attempt falls short, yet Ēlbālis glances toward the blue strip instead of closing the conversation. His attention catches on the uneven cobalt edge and pale dust beneath the stitching.

Ēlbālis

Ēlbālis

Still, you noticed the cloth. That dust may be kiln ash from the northern warehouses, not forge dust. Ask there about cobalt batches bearing a tower mark.

The Innkeeper

The Innkeeper

A useful question, at least. Keep the token visible, and perhaps the warehouse clerks will answer more readily than I would.

The shop’s reputation earns no easy trust, but the failed compliment opens a narrower lead: trace the pale dust and the cobalt dye by their warehouse batches.

Leaves the sāl’p inn

Ēlbālis

Alsōrivō turns fully toward Ēlbālis, then crouches beside the dead man once more. He rifles the damp pockets methodically, keeping the purse, key, and directions visible.

His fingers find the torn inner lining. With careful pressure, he cuts the last threads around the iron token and frees it without disturbing the stamped blacksmith’s mark.

Ēlbālis

Ēlbālis

There. That mark may open a door, but do not mistake it for proof of my brother’s guilt.

Alsōrivō takes the blue strip and studies it beneath the hearthlight. Cobalt dye darkens one edge, while pale kiln dust clings beneath the tiny stitched tower.

The Innkeeper

The Innkeeper

Northern warehouse batches, then. Keep both pieces in sight, and tell the clerks exactly what you found.

The innkeeper gathers the purse and key beside the body, leaving the token and cloth exposed on the table. She unlocks the door and steps aside.

Rain-silvered air replaces the hearth’s warmth as Alsōrivō leaves sāl’p inn. Ēlbālis follows with empty hands, while the northern dye warehouses wait beyond the crowded street.

Director's note

Walks off into the rain

Alsōrivō walks into Warfōsīh’s rain, the blue strip and iron token secured in plain sight. Water streams from the awnings as the inn’s warmth fades behind him.

Ēlbālis

Ēlbālis

The northern warehouses are past the fish market. Keep left at the dye canal, unless the rain has flooded it again.

Ēlbālis follows several paces behind, his charcoal coat darkening with rain. He carries no hammer, purse, key, or other evidence from the common room.

Ēlbālis

Ēlbālis

The clerks may recognize the cobalt batch, but they will not welcome strangers asking about Wardens. Let me speak first.

Alsōrivō passes beneath dripping balconies and crowded shopfronts. The blue cloth’s stitched tower remains visible against the gray street, its pale dust undisturbed.

Ēlbālis

Ēlbālis

If my brother used that mark, he left more than a trail. He left a warning.

Ahead, tall warehouse roofs emerge through the rain, their walls stained blue, violet, and rust-red by years of dye runoff. The northern canal churns beside them.
