Mist hangs low in the damp clearing. The locket in Lumira’s hand flares amber, and the note at her feet curls at the edge, smoking faintly.

A hooded figure steps out of the trees and stops just beyond the light. They do not reach for a weapon. Their gaze locks on the locket as if they have been searching for it all night.

Bren

Easy. If you mean to keep that relic, you will need more than steel.

The Bard stiffens beside Lumira, half-hidden by the pulse of amber light. The stranger lowers their hood a little, revealing a weathered face and a pilgrim’s cord at their throat.

Bren

Bren

I know the marks on that locket. I know the old paths beneath these roots. My name is Bren, and I can guide you to the vault, if you will listen.

Lumira

Lumira

They know the vault.

The strobe brightens between them, throwing long shadows across moss and fern. Bren waits, hands open, while the forest seems to hold its breath.

I hold the pulsing locket toward Bren to see if it reacts to their presence.

Lumira extends the locket into Bren’s reach. The amber pulse catches on the pilgrim’s cord at their throat, then sharpens, as if the relic recognizes old blood or old vows.

Bren

Bren

So it still answers.

Bren’s expression tightens, not with fear, but with the strain of memory. Their hand lifts halfway, then stops, careful not to touch the relic.

Bren

Bren

You were told only part of the truth. This vault was sealed by your line, and by mine. I can guide you, but the path is guarded by a rite that will not forgive hesitation.

The Bard’s face drains of color at that, hope giving way to dread in the strobing light. The singed note at Lumira’s feet curls a little more at the edge.

The locket reacts to Bren.

Bren keeps their gaze on the locket and waits, open-handed, for Lumira to decide whether the guidance is worth the rite.

I ask Bren how the rite works

Lumira

How does the rite work?

Bren

Bren

It is older than the lock. Blood wakes the seal, song steadies it, and the correct vow keeps the roots from deciding you are a trespasser.

Bren

Bren

You do not force it. You answer it. One voice at the threshold, one hand on the relic, and no lie between breath and intent.

A sharp inhale catches at the edge of the clearing, dread returning as the note smolders near their boot.

Bren

Bren

If you want the vault open, I can take you there and speak the opening verse. But the rite will ask for a little blood, and it will remember who bleeds first.

Bren finally lowers their hand, still keeping a careful distance from the locket. The amber pulse reflects in the wet leaves, and the singed vellum at Lumira's feet gives off a faint, bitter smoke.

Bren

Bren

Will you trust me to lead, or do you want the verse now?

Does the rite require my blood?

YES (VeryLikely, rolled 67)

The locket pulses with a sudden, sharp intensity, its amber light bleeding into the skin of Lumira's palm as if recognizing the iron in her blood.

Bren

Bren

The relic does not just ask for a drop, Lumira. It requires a tether, a binding of your own life force to the stone to prove you are the one who belongs to the vault.

Lumira

The heat against my skin is not just magic, it is a demand.
