The airlock cycles shut behind the inspectors, and their footsteps fade into station traffic. For the first time since docking, the Wayward Star settles into uneasy quiet.

Serai emerges from the unused crew cabin and joins Damon in the common area. She keeps near the bulkhead, borrowed dark clothes neat, pale face guarded beneath damp silver hair.

Serai

Serai

The people who placed me aboard were not a formal military unit. At least, they did not identify themselves that way.

Serai

Serai

There were three I saw clearly. A compact woman with copper-brown skin managed the equipment. An older man handled the ship access. The third stayed masked and spoke through a filtered transmitter.

Serai

Serai

They knew the Directorate's procedures, routes, and containment codes. They also knew enough about your freighter to hide the container without damaging its external seals.

Serai

Serai

If they intended to save me, they would have left instructions. If they intended to use me, they may still be watching.

Serai

Serai

I remember the masked one saying the Wayward Star was expendable. I do not know whether that meant your ship, their plan, or both.

Director's notewhole tale

Damon is angry at the operatives, not Serai. He wants to learn why they chose the Wayward Star and is beginning to view their danger as a shared problem. Keep this a quiet character/investigation scene without an immediate attack or interruption.

“Damon goes quiet at the word “expendable,” his expression hardening. “Well. That's comforting.” He sits across from Serai. “I'm not blaming you. You had about as much choice in this as I did. But somebody boarded my ship, hid you in my cargo, turned the Wayward Star into a beacon, and decided losing us was acceptable.” He leans forward. “So this isn't only your problem anymore. Tell me everything you remember about those three—their voices, equipment, names, ship, anything. Then tell me what you think they expected to happen after I found you.””

SUCCESS (Fair Investigation, rolled +2)

The word expendable hangs in the common area. Damon’s expression hardens, but his anger stays directed past Serai, toward the unseen people who used his ship.

So this isn't only your problem anymore. Tell me everything you remember about those three: their voices, equipment, names, ship, anything. Then tell me what you think they expected to happen after I found you.

He sits across from Serai and leans forward. She studies him for several quiet seconds, then lowers herself into the opposite seat, guarded but attentive.

Serai

Serai

The copper-brown woman called herself Vessa once, though I cannot know whether that was her name. She carried a compact interface rig and spoke with a clipped station accent.

Serai

Serai

The older man was broad, gray-haired, and moved like a former shipboard security officer. I heard him called Orun. Their vessel was a narrow courier with no visible registry, running cold until they reached your freighter.

Serai

Serai

I think they expected you to open the container, because the emergency protocol would make the signal stronger. Then the Directorate would follow it here, and your ship would become a delay, a decoy, or a casualty. They needed me alive long enough to reach someone else, but they accepted no survival beyond that point.

Identify who Vessa and Orun work for

Director's note

Keep this investigative and character-driven. Damon wants to identify who Vessa and Orun work for before deciding whether they are allies, enemies, or something in between.

“Damon sits back, absorbing what Serai has told him. “Vessa. Orun. An unregistered courier running cold. That’s more than we had ten minutes ago.” He gets to his feet. “If they knew this station well enough to use its routes and procedures, there may be a trace of them here.” Damon intends to quietly search station records, docking logs, maintenance access, security footage, and local contacts for anything matching Vessa, Orun, or their courier. He will keep Serai’s existence out of the inquiry and avoid drawing attention from station authorities.”

If they knew this station well enough to use its routes and procedures, there may be a trace of them here.

Damon rises and leaves Serai aboard the Wayward Star, concealed from station traffic. He uses a public terminal near the docking concourse, querying berth access, maintenance entries, and camera indexes without mentioning her.

The station returns fragments: several maintenance corridors have rolling retention gaps, and docking records for the relevant hours were manually sealed under a security override. The courier's registry field is blank.

Those files require operations authorization, Captain Ryder. I can confirm the gaps exist, but I cannot open sealed access logs from a public terminal.

His searches trigger a quiet audit notice tied to his docking account. No alarm sounds, but the terminal now records his identity against the sealed files, making another direct query conspicuous.

Serai

They may have erased themselves before leaving. If you continue through official systems, the station may learn exactly what you are seeking.

Director's note

Damon does not access the restricted systems again. Keep this investigative and allow clues or contacts to emerge naturally rather than forcing an immediate confrontation.

“Damon immediately stops querying the terminal. “Then we stop asking computers.” He returns to Serai and considers what they learned: someone with security access deliberately sealed the records and scrubbed the courier’s registry. Damon decides to work the station the old-fashioned way, discreetly asking trusted dockworkers, mechanics, cargo handlers, and independent captains whether they remember a narrow courier running cold or recognize the names Vessa or Orun. He will pose the questions as routine freight-business curiosity and avoid mentioning Serai, the Directorate, or the sealed records.”

Then we stop asking computers. I’ll work the station directly, quietly, and keep you out of every conversation.

Damon closes the terminal without another query and returns to the Wayward Star. He explains the sealed records and scrubbed registry, then begins circulating through ordinary freight traffic.

Serai

Serai

Ask about them as if you are checking a courier for future freight work. Do not let curiosity make the questions memorable.

At a loading spur, a stocky middle-aged dockworker with brown skin, a yellow vest, and a scarred cheek listens while guiding a cargo lifter into position.

Narrow courier, running cold? Yes. Saw one tucked into an auxiliary berth during that shift. No registry lights, no engine heat. Two people came aboard.

A ship mechanic and two independent captains confirm the same detail: the courier used a maintenance transponder borrowed from a subcontractor, and one captain recognizes the name Orun.

the independent captain

the independent captain

Orun used to hire discreet freight crews around the outer docks. Vessa was with him lately. They asked about ships bound away from Directorate inspection lanes.

Director's notewhole tale

Damon avoids official restricted systems and does not mention Serai or the Directorate. Follow the transponder as a practical lead toward Vessa and Orun's organization without forcing their allegiance to be revealed prematurely.

“Damon keeps his reaction casual. “That helps. If I ever hire them, I'd rather know what kind of crew I'm dealing with.” He thanks the captain and doesn't press further. Rather than asking more questions about Vessa or Orun directly, Damon focuses on the maintenance transponder. He discreetly tries to learn which subcontractor it belonged to and who could have borrowed or accessed it, using his damaged cargo hold as a legitimate reason for asking about local maintenance services.”

Damon keeps his tone easy, offers the captain a brief nod, and leaves without pressing for more. He returns toward the loading spurs, asking about local maintenance contractors instead.

He presents the Wayward Star's scorched hold panel as the reason for his questions. A lean middle-aged station mechanic with oil-dark hands and a blue service jacket checks the damage photographs.

That transponder belongs to Kestrel Dock Services. Their subcontractor pool is loose, but the unit was signed out by a technician named Pell six shifts ago.

Pell still working this berth? I need someone who knows older cargo systems and won't make the damage worse.

the station mechanic

Pell accessed the unit personally, then returned it through a contractor locker. I can give you the locker code and his shift terminal, but that costs forty credits.

Damon pays from his repair reserve. The mechanic records the Wayward Star's hull number beside the transaction, making the inquiry traceable, but hands over Kestrel's subcontractor name, Pell's access record, and the locker details.

Tell Serai about the maintenance lead

Director's notewhole tale

Damon shares the full lead with Serai and asks for her insight before investigating further. Keep this investigative and character-driven; Damon does not access Pell’s locker or terminal yet.

“Damon returns to the Wayward Star and finds Serai. “I found something. The transponder came from Kestrel Dock Services. It was personally signed out six shifts ago by a technician named Pell, then returned through a contractor locker. I have Pell’s shift terminal and the locker code.” He pauses. “There’s a catch. It cost me forty credits, and the mechanic logged the Wayward Star’s hull number with the transaction. Between that and the terminal audit, our questions are starting to leave a trail.” Damon studies her reaction. “Before I touch that locker or go anywhere near Pell, tell me if the name means anything to you. Did you hear Vessa, Orun, or the masked operative mention Pell or Kestrel?””

Serai listens without interrupting. At the names, her guarded expression tightens, and she glances toward the sealed corridor as though weighing memory against danger.

Serai

Serai

Pell means nothing to me. Neither does Kestrel Dock Services. I heard no such name from Vessa, Orun, or the masked operative.

Serai

But a contractor transponder would fit their method. They needed access without displaying their own identity. If Pell knowingly helped them, the locker may reveal more than his terminal. If he was used, approaching him carelessly could warn whoever arranged it.
