Veyr accompanies Ronin through the tannery’s broken arch, while Captain Orlan and the oasis watch remain behind. Inside, the outcasts gather around a cracked table.
Ronin stays armed, his ribs aching beneath the duel’s bruise. The elderly elf woman sets a chipped cup before him, then takes the table’s head.

the elderly elf woman
The watch has pushed laborers, beggars, and dissenters to the curb. They call it order. In truth, emptied streets are easier to command.

Veyr
I have carried coin for those patrols. They move by whistles, shift by shift, sealing lanes before anyone knows the pressure has begun.

the masked figure
Our people can show you their pattern. In return, help us reopen the streets without handing the watch another excuse to tighten its grip.

the elderly elf woman
Assist us, swordsman, and we will teach you what the polished schools omit: balance in cramped ground, timing beneath distraction, and the signs behind coordinated pursuit.

the elderly elf woman
Will you hear the first lesson, or must we begin by proving which alleys the watch has already claimed?

Help build a better society for the outcasts.
““Where do we start?” I ask.”
SUCCESS (Fair Reasoning, rolled +1)

Ronin
Where do we start?
The elderly elf woman spreads a charcoal-marked scrap across the cracked table. Its lines chart the tannery quarter, the well, and three narrow lanes leading toward the eastern gate.

the elderly elf woman
Here. The watch begins at the bell tower before dawn, then closes the lanes in a tightening crescent.

the masked figure
Their whistles carry the pattern. One note means a patrol shifts, two mean a street is sealed, and three summon Captain Orlan’s riders.
The masked figure places colored stones along the charcoal lines. Veyr studies them, recognizing the routes he once guarded, while the elderly elf woman taps a forgotten drainage cut.

Veyr
We begin at the bell tower. Take that post, and every movement below becomes visible before the watch can form its crescent.

the elderly elf woman
You will learn the ground there tonight. We will show you the hidden approach, the signal marks, and the first opening to reclaim.
“I listen carefully and follow them.”
SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled -3)

Ronin listens without interrupting, fixing the charcoal routes and whistle meanings in memory. He follows the elderly elf woman through a rear passage as Veyr and the masked figure lead into the darkened quarter.

the elderly elf woman
Keep your eyes on the walls, not the road. Watch marks outlast patrols, and patrols trust the marks.
They pass beneath sagging beams and emerge behind the bell tower. The elf woman points out a concealed stair, a loose boundary stone, and chalk slashes hidden beneath soot.

the masked figure
From here, one whistle sends the western patrol north. Two draw them back. Three bring riders, so silence is part of the lesson.

Ronin
The drainage cut reaches the tower’s lower stair.
Ronin follows their route through the drainage cut and reaches the tower’s lower stair, learning the first opening into the watch’s crescent. His bruised ribs flare when he squeezes beneath the stone lip.

Veyr
You have it now. At dawn, this stair lets us reach the bell rope before the first whistle, if your ribs permit the climb.
“I wait, readying my bow with blunt arrows ready to knock out as many corrupt guards as I can.”
SUCCESS (Mediocre Ranged Combat, rolled +0)

Ronin settles behind the soot-darkened boundary stone, bow across his knees. He fits blunt arrows to the quiver’s front loops and waits beneath the tower’s shadow.
Dawn pales the eastern sky. Below, corrupt guards, adult men with sturdy builds, weathered faces, cropped dark hair, and dusty brown uniforms beneath their bronze badges enter the lane in pairs, their bronze badges catching light as whistles mark the tightening crescent.

Veyr
There. The lead pair first. Strike when their spacing closes, before the others can form ranks.
Ronin releases in measured succession. Blunt shafts crack against helmets and padded chests; three guards collapse stunned, and a fourth drops his whistle.
The last arrow jars Ronin’s bruised ribs as he draws, sending a sharp ache through his side. His bowstring snaps loudly against the stone, exposing the firing point.

the masked figure
The stair is clear. Move now, before the fallen wake and the tower answers with three whistles.

the elderly elf woman
You bought us the opening, swordsman. The watch knows someone is here, but its crescent is broken.
“I jump out and grab a guard’s head, telling others to take me to the lead commander.”
SUCCESS (Great Strength, rolled +1)
Ronin vaults from behind the boundary stone and seizes the nearest guard by the head, locking him upright before the others can recover.

Ronin
Take me to your lead commander.
The captured guard’s bronze badge flashes beneath Ronin’s grip. His companions halt with whistles lowered, staring at their stunned formation and the swordsman holding their front rank.

the captured guard
Captain Orlan commands this crescent. Release me, and we will take you to him.

Veyr
Keep him close, Ronin. They will obey while their leader remains beyond reach.
The guards raise empty hands and begin backing toward the tower, guiding Ronin and his captive along the lane. The broken crescent parts before them.

the elderly elf woman
Good. Let Orlan see who controls the ground beneath his tower.
