The Stranger's Warning

The void tightens into a figure with blurred edges and a hungry stare. It reaches for the seal in Wolfie’s hand, fingers trembling like they remember the shape of a prayer.

The Double

The Double

No. Not that hunger. Not again.

The Stranger

The Stranger

Do not let it close. I can feel it breathing through the ward.

The new arrival steadies, taking one more step from the dark, features still half-lost in the shimmer. Silver light skims across their face as they look from Wolfie to the seal, wary and intent.

The Stranger

The Stranger

I know this sign. If the binding holds, something starved stays caged. If it breaks, it finds a shape.

The Double dims further, silent now, while the stranger keeps their hand out, not touching, waiting for Wolfie to choose whether the seal stays locked or becomes a door.

Identify the stranger's intent

*Read the stranger*

SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled +1)

Wolfie lets his gaze settle on the stranger’s face, then the strain beneath it. The hunger is there, but it is layered over something sharper, a practiced vigilance worn thin by urgency.

Wolfie

Wolfie

He is not here to bargain. He is here to stop something.

The stranger’s outstretched hand does not shake with greed. It steadies, like someone bracing a door against a storm. Their eyes keep flicking to the seal, not coveting it, measuring its pulse.

The Stranger

The Stranger

Too late for softness. If he mistakes me, the ward opens anyway.

Wolfie catches the true shape of them in the silver spill, a watcher, a warder, maybe a trespasser, but not the first mouth at the lock. The mark on his palm warms once, answering the stranger’s nearness like a matching wound.

The Double sags another fraction, dim as candle smoke. The stranger notices it too, jaw tightening, and lowers their hand at last without stepping back.

The Stranger

The Stranger

You can tell what I am from one look. Good. Then look harder, and decide whether I am the knife, or the hand that keeps one from your throat.

... I just don't know what to do, I barely understand what's on the other side. Breach implies... *He doesn't say it*

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +1)

The Stranger's Warning
Wolfie

Wolfie

I just do not know what to do. I barely understand what is on the other side... or what breach even means.

The seal’s light catches in Wolfie’s palm as he admits it. The silver script shivers, then steadies, like it is listening.

The Stranger

The Stranger

That hesitation helps more than bravado. It means you are still choosing, not following the first voice that flatters you.

The Double

The Double

He is honest. Gods, that is rare. Thank the void he has not slammed the wrong door.

The Stranger’s gaze softens by a degree, not warm, but less hard. Their hand stays lowered. The Double’s glow thins at the edges, yet he watches Wolfie with a tired, approving stillness.

The Stranger

The Stranger

A breach is not a wound that leaks. It is a place where something waits with a shape just like yours. If you fear the wrong thing, it gets in.

The mark on Wolfie’s palm gives a brief, answering heat, then settles. For a beat, the courtyard is only silence, three figures bound by the same uneasy truth.

Why is my state of being so important now when it didn't matter before?

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +0)

The Stranger's Warning

The Stranger studies Wolfie’s marked hand, then looks back at his face as if measuring a seam in old stone. The courtyard stays hushed, but the darkness beyond them ripples once, faint and distant.

The Stranger

The Stranger

Because before, you were only a passerby. Now the seal has chosen you, and anything chained to it can feel that choice.

The Double

The Double

He feels it too. The old binding knows where to look.

The mark on Wolfie’s palm gives a brief, dull pulse, not pain, just recognition. The Double’s shoulders sag with weary confirmation.

The Stranger

The Stranger

Your state matters now because you are part of the lock. If you break, panic, or hand it over blindly, the thing on the other side gets a voice again.

The Double

The Double

That is why we are speaking to you like this. Not to burden you, to keep you from being used.

The Stranger lifts one hand, palm open, empty and steady. For the first time, their expression reads less like warning and more like appeal.

The Stranger

The Stranger

So, Wolfie, do you see me as the danger, or the warning?

I see both of you as friends, or parts of me, or a mixture of both, but the intent is clear. *He holds out the seal* I don't have any idea what to do with this.

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -1)

The Stranger's Warning

Wolfie eases the seal forward in his palm, offering it between them instead of clutching it tight. The script on it stirs, a pale shimmer crossing his marked skin.

Wolfie

Wolfie

I see both of you as friends, or maybe parts of me. Either way, your intent is clear. I do not know what to do with this.

The stranger’s open hand lowers a fraction, not in defeat, but in relief. The Double’s dim form straightens, as if Wolfie has set down a weight they were too tired to name.

The Stranger

The Stranger

Then you hear me rightly. I am not here to take it from you by force.

The Double

The Double

And I am not asking you to carry it alone.

For a brief moment, the darkness beyond the courtyard stills, held at bay by nothing more than honesty and a trembling seal.

The Stranger

The Stranger

If you want, I will tell you what I remember of the breach, and what the seal was meant to keep asleep.

*He sighs* If you will. I am just.. Tired you know? Of my, our existence meaning... *He holds it up* carrying things like this.

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +1)

The Stranger's Warning
Wolfie

Wolfie

If you will. I am tired of all this meaning, tired of carrying things like this.

Wolfie lifts the seal a little higher, palm open beneath its script. The mark on his skin glows softly, as if answering the weight he names.

The Stranger

The Stranger

Then rest your hand, and listen. I will tell you what I remember, plainly.

The Double

The Double

Good. Let it be shared for once, not forced alone.

The Stranger’s shoulders ease. The Double’s dim outline gathers itself, still exhausted, but steadier for the promise of witness.

The Stranger

The Stranger

The breach was not a door. It was a hunger that learned our shape, and the seal was forged to make it sleep.

The Double

The Double

And I stayed because I feared what would happen if anyone else had to remember it.

Wolfie’s offer holds, and neither of them takes the seal. The void around the courtyard remains still, waiting on the story instead of the threat.

... *He takes a deep breath, he's aware of the hunger they speak of*

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -1)

The Stranger's Warning

Wolfie draws one slow breath, and the mark on his palm dims to a steady ember. His shoulders settle, not in surrender, but in control. The seal stops tugging at the edge of his thoughts.

Wolfie

Wolfie

The hunger is there, but it does not get in.

The Stranger

The Stranger

Good. Hold to that. The breach loves a mind that starts to drift.

The Stranger watches him with open, careful attention. The Double’s fading outline eases, as if Wolfie’s focus gives it room to breathe.

The Double

The Double

That is the trick of it, Wolfie. It leans on memory, then calls it invitation.

The Stranger

The Stranger

And that is why I wanted this told plainly. Not as a warning shouted in panic, but as something you can carry without flinching.

The courtyard stays still around them. For the first time, the seal feels less like a burden in Wolfie’s hand and more like a thing being held, named, and watched.

It's like you intend to define it. *It's also a question*

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +2)

The Stranger tilts their head, studying the ember dim in Wolfie’s palm, then looks back to his face as if measuring the shape of the question itself.

The Stranger

The Stranger

You think I mean to define it? No. I mean to show you what definition costs.

The Stranger

The Stranger

A breach is not an opening, not really. It is a hunger that learns the outline of whatever watches it.

Wolfie

Wolfie

So it wears a shape long before it wears a face.

The Double

The Double

That is why memory matters. It gives the hunger a road into you, if you let it.

The Stranger

The Stranger

And why I do not call you foolish for asking. I call you living.

The Double’s shoulders sag with tired relief, but their gaze stays sharp on the seal, as though guarding even this calm from cracking.

The Stranger

The Stranger

If you want the plain truth, I can give it. If you want the softer one, I can try that too.

I feel like a fool for ever opening myself up like this, just because I wanted to remember, to be myself again. I am tired of feeling like my existence is predicated on... *He sighs* that... I'm some kind of disaster waiting to happen. That my existence puts others at risk, ourselves, people we care about.

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +0)

The courtyard keeps its hush. Wolfie lets the truth out at last, and the words hang there, plain and tired, as if he has set down something heavy he has carried too long.

The Stranger’s hand lowers. Their expression softens into something almost gentle, not pity, just understanding sharpened by old regret.

The Stranger

The Stranger

That feeling is not foolish. It is familiar. I have worn it too, when I thought every choice I touched became a wound.

The Double

The Double

You are not a disaster. You are burdened. There is a difference, and it matters.

Wolfie’s marked palm throbs once, then settles. The ember-light in it shows on his robes and the inside of his wrist, small and undeniable.

The Stranger

The Stranger

If you opened yourself to remember, then you did it because you were trying to be whole, not because you meant harm. The risk is real. So are you.

The Double watches him with exhausted relief, as if that answer has been waiting in them for a very long time. The seal’s glow stays calm in Wolfie’s hand.

The Stranger

The Stranger

Tell me which part weighs on you most, the memory, or the fear of what it might make you become?

... *He just waits*

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -1)

Wolfie says nothing. He simply lets the silence stand, and the courtyard answers by settling deeper around the three of them.

The Stranger

The Stranger

They study him with care, then with a small, practiced sadness. Waiting can be its own kind of answer.

The Stranger lowers their chin and eases back half a step, giving the moment room. The seal rests steady in Wolfie’s hand, its glow calm against the dim ember of his mark.

The Double

The Double

Then let us not rush him. Some truths take root only when no one is striking the soil.

The Double’s relief shows in the way their shoulders unclench, though exhaustion still hangs on them like a worn cloak. They keep watching Wolfie as if guarding the shape of his quiet.

The Stranger

The Stranger

You can wait. I will not force the memory open. Not while you are holding it this steadily.

For a little while, nobody moves to take anything from him. The hush becomes a shared pause, and the question is left open between them like a lamp on a table.

It's not about memory. You are right, I do not wish to become what I once was. But I do not intend to discard the knowledge and wisdom either. The issue also becomes, what if I'm inviting something in, or unaware of something, that is... *He gestures widely* consuming, harming, rewriting things? People, beings? That is the fear. The loss of self, of soul, of who one is.

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +1)

Wolfie

Wolfie

It is not memory alone. I do not want to lose myself, or become what I was, but I do not mean to cast away what I know. I fear I might let something in, something that consumes, harms, and rewrites people and things.

Wolfie’s hand lifts in a broad, frustrated arc, and the seal answers with a soft, steady pulse. The ember at his palm holds fast instead of flaring.

The Stranger

The Stranger

That fear is honest. Honest fear is easier to guard than proud denial.

The Double

The Double

And wiser than pretending the wound cannot open again.

The Double’s tired face softens further, as if relieved to hear the warning named aloud. The Stranger watches Wolfie’s palm-mark, then his eyes, as though measuring how much of him is still his own.

The Stranger

The Stranger

You are not wrong to question the seal. You are asking the proper question, whether the breach touches the bearer, or the bearer touches back.

The Double

The Double

That is why we stayed. Not to make you carry it blind, only to keep you from carrying it alone.

*He looks between both of them^ You seemed to be being careful, but hunger isn't inherently bad, so I am taking it you are being careful because you don't want me to get the wrong idea? *He looks at the seal* Is it the wound or something using it? That's the fear, the lack of clarity, cause those are very different things.

SUCCESS (Good Reasoning, rolled +1)

The Stranger's Warning

Wolfie’s gaze goes from the Stranger to the Double and back again, the question landing cleanly in the hush. The seal sits steady in his palm, its ember dim but awake.

The Stranger

The Stranger

Not a wound alone. Wounds can be shut. This is a place that can be used, and something on the far side knows how to press at it.

The Double

The Double

That is why I feared careless truth more than ignorance. A breach can be a tear, but it can also be a mouth.

The Double’s shoulders sag with the effort of saying it plainly, exhaustion tightening at the edges of their voice. The Stranger keeps their hands open, careful, as if naming the thing too sharply might make it lean closer.

The Stranger

The Stranger

If it were only a wound, we would bind it. If it were only a thing wearing the wound, we would strike it. It is both troublesome and clever enough to blur the line.

The Double

The Double

So yes, we are careful. Not because hunger is evil in itself, but because this hunger learns. It watches through memory.

The courtyard seems to narrow around the answer. The mark in Wolfie’s palm gives a faint, ember-bright throb, and the two guardians fall quiet, waiting to see whether he has heard the warning as warning or verdict.

“*He stares at it intently for a while, scowls, then places it on the ground, again looking like he's deep in thought, then says* "You know what?" *He nods as if coming to a consensus with his own internal dialogue, and who knows whatever else, then manifests floppy bunny ears and places them on the seal, standing back he seems to be framing it with his hands (Visually, making a camera box motion with his hands to gauge, then nods again as he purposefully walks over and sets the ears, lopsided.) There.”

SUCCESS (Superb Magic, rolled -2)

The Stranger's Warning

Wolfie lets the silence sit a moment longer, then lowers the seal to the stone. His scowl deepens as he studies it like an offended relic.

Wolfie

Wolfie

You know what?

A flick of blue light gathers around his hands. Floppy bunny ears appear in a soft pop of magic and land crookedly atop the seal.

He frames the little arrangement with both hands, measuring it like an artist, then steps in and sets the ears properly, lopsided on purpose.

The mark in his palm gives one hot pulse, and the seal answers with a thin, clean chime. The courtyard’s tight air loosens at once.

The Stranger

The Stranger

...That is certainly one way to speak to a lock.

The Double

The Double

I think it approves. Or it is offended. Hard to tell with ancient things.

*He makes a face like he was considering, then nods.* (At the aesthetic)

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +4)

The Stranger's Warning
Wolfie

Wolfie

Wolfie studies the little crowned seal, then gives a slow, approving nod. The grin never reaches his eyes, but it does the job.

The Double

The Double

There. That is the first honest blessing this courtyard has seen in ages.

The seal drinks in the nod like warm rain. Its silver script brightens, and a hidden ring of runes wakes around the bunny ears, delicate as a halo.

The Stranger

The Stranger

It recognizes intention. That is useful, and mildly insulting to everyone involved.

The Double sways, then steadies, watching the seal with tired wonder. For the first time, the mark in Wolfie’s palm lies quiet instead of burning.

The Double

The Double

If it can be soothed this easily, then it has always wanted a keeper, not a jailer.

The Stranger’s amusement softens into something more thoughtful. They tilt their head toward Wolfie, as if offering him the small miracle of being taken seriously.

These things are often about facing our fears, or maybe putting a funny hat on them in my case?

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +3)

The Stranger's Warning

Wolfie lets the joke settle over the courtyard, and the strange little halo around the seal answers with a quiet, pleased pulse. The Double exhales like someone setting down a long-shouldered weight.

The Double

The Double

That is exactly the sort of heresy I can respect.

The Stranger

The Stranger

Humor is a form of refusal. Sometimes it is the cleanest one.

Wolfie

Wolfie

The mark on his palm stays calm.

The Stranger studies Wolfie with open, careful attention, not at the seal this time, but at the way he stands beside it as if enduring a nuisance.

The Stranger

The Stranger

You are not cowering from it. That matters. It means the seal has not won your memory yet.

The Double gives a tired, fond snort and glances between them, relieved enough to look almost young for a moment.

The Double

The Double

And now it is listening, which is the uncomfortable part. Still, I think it likes you.

*He turns to the double emphatically* You see? And is it foolish of me to want to believe that's a good thing?

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +0)

Wolfie

Wolfie

You see? Is it foolish of me to think that is a good sign?

The Double

The Double

Foolish, maybe. But not wrong. It is relief, Wolfie. I have seen wards fight and I have seen wards welcome.

The Stranger

The Stranger

A seal that settles for you is not the same as a seal that surrenders to you. That distinction matters.

The Double

The Double

It matters very much. He is not forcing it, and it is not spitting him out. That is a promising shape for trust.

The Stranger

The Stranger

And your hand no longer burns. The bond has accepted the terms, for now.

The Double

The Double

For now is enough to breathe again. It may even be enough to admit I am glad you are the one holding it.

The Stranger

The Stranger

Then let us say the plain thing. You are not a mistake here, Wolfie. You are a witness, and perhaps a keeper, if you choose to be.
