Amalgam reaches the old throne room as red emergency lights sweep across cracked stone and modern security wiring. Several containment doors hang open behind him.

Maestro stands before the ruined throne, a middle-aged man, lean and pale-skinned with slicked-back dark hair in a black tailcoat with silver musical notes stitched across it, white gloves, and a conductor’s baton. His sharp smile frames a neatly trimmed beard.

Maestro

Maestro

There he is. The tireless scientist who keeps ruining my performances.

A scattered crowd of escaped criminals turns toward Amalgam. Some clutch stolen equipment, while others linger near shattered cells, measuring the exits and one another.

Maestro

Maestro

Join me, and you receive power, protection, and the chance to settle every score this prison denied you.

A harsh klaxon interrupts him. Beyond the throne room, locks disengage in rapid succession, followed by distant impacts and the rising clamor of more prisoners breaking free.

Maestro

Maestro

You arrived at the perfect moment, Amalgam. Shall we give the audience an encore?

Stop Maestro's recruitment drive

“Has anyone here accepted Maestro's offer?”

NO (Likely, rolled 89)

The escaped criminals trade wary looks instead of stepping forward. No one crosses the open floor, and no voice answers Maestro’s invitation.

Maestro

Maestro

Silence? After I offer you freedom, protection, and influence?

A broad-shouldered thief, a young adult man with dark skin, close-cropped black hair, a scar through one eyebrow, and a patched brown coat lowers the stolen device in his hands. Others edge toward separate exits, keeping distance from both Maestro and one another.

We know what happens to people who work for you.

The answer settles across the throne room: every prisoner remains independent, suspicious, or unwilling. Maestro has gained no allies from the offer.

Maestro

Maestro

Ungrateful, all of you. Very well. An audience need not be loyal to appreciate a finale.

Amalgam

I challenge you to a battle of wits, Maestro. Let these convicts judge which of us deserves the stage.

A few convicts snicker and form a loose semicircle. Maestro’s smile tightens, but he flourishes his baton as though accepting a royal invitation.

Maestro

Maestro

Gladly. I will ask the questions, and you will answer before this audience. One mistake, and your grand reputation becomes tonight’s punchline.

His baton emits three precise tones. The security wiring answers with blinking lights, and a metal display panel rises from the throne’s broken base.

Maestro

Maestro

What has a voice, obeys no master, and exposes every fool who mistakes spectacle for intellect?

The convicts look to Amalgam, expecting a clever reversal. Instead, the panel’s reflected circuitry reveals Maestro is using its tones to control the prison locks.

The challenge has not embarrassed him, but it has exposed the mechanism behind his performance. The convicts now watch the baton, not Maestro’s face, waiting to see who exploits the opening.

“I challenge Maestro to a battle of wits to embarrass him in front of the convicts”

SUCCESS (Great Reasoning, rolled +0)

The Prison Encore

Amalgam’s challenge turns Maestro’s riddle against him. The display magnifies the baton’s signal pattern, revealing that every grand tone is merely a lock command dressed as theater.

escaped criminals

That is the big secret? He whistles at doors and calls it genius.

Laughter ripples through the semicircle. Maestro’s baton stutters, and several prisoners deliberately step toward unlocked exits, applauding each obedient click.

Maestro

Maestro

You mistake access for understanding. I allowed the mechanism to be seen.

His denial collapses when the panel projects his control sequence beside a humiliating label: MAESTRO’S SIMPLE TUNING EXERCISE. Even the broad-shouldered thief grins.

The victory costs Amalgam. His cybernetic arm absorbs the panel’s feedback, locking rigid as sparks spit from the wrist and a warning flashes across his goggles.

Looks like the scientist won the first movement. Somebody get the conductor a smaller orchestra.

I challenge you to a battle of wits, Maestro. Let these convicts decide which of us deserves the stage.

The convicts tighten their semicircle, entertained by the prospect. Maestro raises his baton, but its damaged tip gives a thin, ridiculous squeak.

Maestro

Maestro

A battle of wits? Very well. I shall pose the questions, and you will answer before this unworthy audience.

His first riddle triggers the throne panel. Instead of hiding his control method, the display enlarges it, labeling each musical phrase with the prison lock it opens.

Laughter rolls through the chamber. Maestro’s polished performance collapses into exposed circuitry and obedient locks, while the convicts applaud every humiliating click.

Maestro

Maestro

“I turn the convicts against Maestro's recruitment”

SUCCESS (Great Reasoning, rolled +0)

The Prison Encore

Amalgam angles his rigid cybernetic arm toward the enlarged control sequence. The panel projects each lock command across the convicts, making Maestro’s recruitment look less like power and more like a cheap trick.

Amalgam

Amalgam

The baton is only a remote control with theatrical timing.

The convicts compare the displayed commands with the open doors. Their amusement hardens into contempt as Maestro’s promise of protection becomes visibly dependent on equipment he no longer fully controls.

escaped criminals

He cannot protect anyone. He can barely keep his own doors synchronized.

Several escaped criminals step away from Maestro and toward the exposed exits, deliberately ignoring his sweeping baton. The loose semicircle now faces him as a hostile audience.

Maestro

Maestro

You mistake a temporary demonstration for weakness. I offered you positions, and you answer with mockery?

We answer with freedom. Keep your orchestra, Maestro. We are not joining your performance.

“I ask the broad-shouldered thief for a route out”

SUCCESS (Superb Reasoning, rolled +0)

Amalgam

Amalgam

Broad-shouldered thief, I need a route out. Which way avoids the remaining security locks?

The broad-shouldered thief turns from Maestro, lowering the stolen device. His scarred eyebrow lifts, and he studies Amalgam's sparking cybernetic arm before answering.

broad-shouldered thief

broad-shouldered thief

West service corridor. The loading bay doors are already cycling. Take the blue-lit passage, then follow the maintenance arrows downstairs.

He points past a cracked containment block, where blue emergency strips mark a narrow passage behind the throne. The route remains clear as prisoners stream toward other exits.

broad-shouldered thief

The baton does not control that line. It runs on the prison's backup grid, so Maestro cannot seal it from here.

A distant door clangs open, revealing the first blue marker beyond drifting dust. Maestro snaps his baton toward the departing criminals, but none turn back.

broad-shouldered thief

broad-shouldered thief

You exposed him. I can give you the route. Whether you use it before he finds another trick is your problem.

“I take the blue-lit passage downstairs”

SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled -1)

Amalgam enters the blue-lit passage and descends the maintenance stairs, keeping his rigid cybernetic arm close as emergency strips flicker along the concrete walls.

The damaged arm catches on a protruding conduit. Sparks burst across the stairwell, and the sharp metallic crack echoes upward through the prison.

Amalgam

Amalgam

The backup grid is active, but my arm is losing power.

Amalgam reaches the lower maintenance level. Blue arrows point directly toward the loading bay, where cycling doors admit cold night air and the distant pulse of city traffic.

Maestro

Maestro

Running already, Amalgam? Your noisy little retreat has made your destination wonderfully obvious.

Behind him, Maestro’s baton sounds through the stairwell, but the lower locks remain dark and unresponsive. The route stays open despite the warning.

A final maintenance door rolls aside as Amalgam reaches the loading bay. His escape route is clear, though the sparking arm and Maestro’s attention now travel with him.

“I jam the loading bay doors behind me”

SUCCESS (Good Technology, rolled +0)

Amalgam reaches the loading bay controls as the doors cycle behind him. He jams his rigid cybernetic arm into the track assembly, forcing the panels together.

The doors grind shut and lock against the arm's improvised brace. Sparks shower across the concrete, and the cybernetic hand goes completely dark.

Amalgam

Amalgam

The loading bay is sealed, but the arm has lost power.

Cold air still pours through a narrow seam, carrying city noise beyond the prison walls. The jam holds, but the damaged mechanism shrieks whenever pressure shifts.

Maestro

Maestro

A crude barricade, Amalgam. You have traded mobility for a few seconds of privacy.

Maestro's footsteps stop on the far side of the sealed doors. His baton taps once against the metal, but the backup grid refuses his command.

The loading bay remains inaccessible from the prison side, while the open night and distant traffic offer Amalgam a clear way out.

“Detach and detonate cyber arm”

FAILURE (Good Technology, rolled -2)

Amalgam works the emergency release on his dead cybernetic arm. The locking collar resists, then snaps free, leaving the arm wedged in the loading-bay track.

He triggers the concealed overload. Instead of detonating, the arm spits a blinding flash and vents a burst of gray suppressant foam across the machinery.

Amalgam

Amalgam

The charge is inert. The arm is still fused to the door assembly.

The failed discharge trips the bay's safety system. Warning strobes ignite, and the sealed panels unlock halfway before grinding to a halt around the immobilized arm.

Maestro

Maestro

A bomb that becomes a doorstop? Even your failures insist on an encore.

Cold air surges through the widened gap. The arm remains trapped in the track, powerless and useless, while the opening is now large enough for Amalgam to pass.

Behind the doors, Maestro's baton taps against metal again. The backup grid still cannot close the passage, but his voice follows through the gap.

“Detach and detonate cyber arm”

FAILURE (Good Technology, rolled -1)

“I wedge debris into the damaged door mechanism”

SUCCESS (Good Strength, rolled -1)

Amalgam tears a length of broken conduit from the loading-bay wall and drives it beneath the damaged track assembly, bracing the warped mechanism against the concrete.

The debris wedges firmly. The half-open doors stop grinding and hold at a stable gap wide enough for him to pass, while the trapped arm remains behind.

The cost arrives in a sharp metallic snap: the conduit shears, showering his coat and exposed wrist with hot fragments. The arm stays powerless, but the passage is secured.

Maestro

Maestro

Improvisation with refuse? How wonderfully practical. I had expected genius, not construction work.

Maestro strikes the door with his baton. The backup grid flickers, but the wedged track refuses to move, and the gap remains open to the cold night.

Maestro

Maestro

Go on, then. Leave your precious mechanical limb behind and call the retreat a victory.

Beyond the secured opening, wet pavement reflects the prison lights. City traffic murmurs nearby, while the disabled cybernetic arm hangs fixed in the machinery behind him.

“Quickly salvage what i can from the arm”

SUCCESS (Good Technology, rolled +1)

Amalgam slips through the stable gap, then reaches back into the machinery with his functioning hand. He strips the arm's outer panel free from the warped track.

Inside, the emergency release has exposed a compact power regulator, two intact sensor coils, and a sealed data wafer. He disconnects each component with quick, practiced movements.

Amalgam

Amalgam

The regulator and coils are still usable.

The cybernetic arm remains fused to the door assembly, but its salvageable core components come free into Amalgam's coat pockets. Gray foam coats the ruined housing.

Maestro

Maestro

Looting your own discarded limb? How touching. Do keep the souvenirs; they may remind you what my prison cost.

Amalgam steps onto the wet pavement with the regulator, sensor coils, and data wafer secured. Behind him, the wedged doors hold, trapping the useless arm and Maestro inside.

Maestro

Maestro

Run to your city, scientist. I will turn this little amputation into the opening number of our next performance.
