The festival’s music dwindles behind Kanji as the alley twists between dark timber walls. He still carries the bracelet’s loose thread, its bright colors trembling in his fingers.
At the far end, Lady Seraphine fills the brighter exit. She is nearly three times Kanji’s height, broad-shouldered and powerfully built, her shadow stretching across the cobbles.

She lowers herself slightly, but the movement only brings her looming smile closer. One large hand settles against the alley wall beside the exit, blocking the clearest path out.

No footsteps answer from the festival. No friendly voice calls from the darkness. Seraphine extends her other hand, palm open, waiting to see whether Kanji steps toward it or tries to slip past.

Kanji slips clear of her grasp and reaches the shadowed bend behind him, the bracelet thread still clenched in his fingers.

No. That will not do.
Seraphine pivots hard, planting herself across the alley again. Pale motes of magic gather around her cloak, sealing its hem to the cobbles and narrowing the passage.
