Before Fetren can touch the latch, hurried steps climb from below. The tavern keeper appears on the stair, clutching a folded scrap sealed in red wax.

the tavern keeper

the tavern keeper

This came from a veiled woman at the bar. She paid me to deliver it only to Merrow, and I will not carry it farther.

The wax bears the king’s sign, pressed deep enough to fracture the parchment beneath it. The keeper extends the message toward the closed door.

Fetren

Fetren

A royal seal at a deserter’s rented room. That is either bait, or a summons with teeth.

From within, something scrapes softly across wood. A second movement follows, measured and near the door, while lamplight trembles beneath the threshold.

the tavern keeper

the tavern keeper

Merrow? Your message is here. I have other rooms to tend, so answer before this stair becomes crowded.

Fetren

Fetren

He heard us before the keeper arrived. If that seal opens the door, the room may not contain only Veyr.

I tug on Fetren’s sleeve, silently asking him if that is the seal we are seeking and if stealing it will end our mission or if we must still confront veyr. While doing this I listen closely to the sounds of veyr’s room to try and discern any information I can about the rooms occupants while the lodge keeper approaches the door.

SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled +2)

Eowyn catches Fetren’s sleeve before the keeper reaches the latch. Her fingers point toward the red-sealed scrap, then toward the closed room, asking without sound whether it is their prize or merely bait.

Fetren

Fetren

The seal is evidence, not our quarry. We still need Veyr, and we need the reliquary unopened. If this summons draws him out, we follow the opening.

Eowyn listens past the keeper’s approaching boots. Inside, one person breathes steadily near the door; another shifts farther back, cloth brushing wood, while a faint chain clicks against stone.

Eowyn

Eowyn

Two occupants. One is waiting at the door; the other is guarding something heavier than a message.

Fetren

Fetren

Two inside, at least. The nearer one favors the latch. The deeper sound is metal, not a sword being drawn. Veyr may have company, or the reliquary is chained.

The tavern keeper steps onto the landing and raises the sealed message toward the door. The lamplight beneath it shifts as someone inside comes directly before the threshold.

the tavern keeper

the tavern keeper

Merrow, I have delivered your royal message. Open now, or I leave it on the floor and return to my tables.

I hurriedly duck behind a corner, not wanting to give away my position to the room’s occupance.

Eowyn slips behind the sharp corner beside the rear stair, drawing her white hair and cloak into the deeper shadow. The closed room keeps her position concealed.

Fetren

Fetren

Good. Let the door open on an empty landing. I will watch the keeper and the threshold.

Fetren shifts a pace toward the opposite wall, appearing to study the warped plaster. The keeper, focused on the sealed message, notices neither movement nor concealment.

the tavern keeper

the tavern keeper

Merrow, this is your final courtesy. Take the message, or explain to the king why his seal lies abandoned on my floor.

The latch lifts from within. Lamplight spills across the threshold, stopping short of Eowyn’s corner. A narrow-faced man peers out, one hand hidden beneath his coat.

Orsik

Orsik

Set it down. No one enters, and no one touches the door after you leave.

The keeper places the red-sealed scrap on the floor and retreats down one stair. Inside, the second occupant shifts; the faint chain answers with a dull click.

As the keeper lumbers down the stairs, paying no attention to the unusual occupants of the room, Eowyn slips out her twin blades and prepares for combat with the room’s occupants.

As the keeper lumbers down the stairs, Eowyn slips from the corner’s shadow. Her twin blades leave their sheaths without a whisper, their edges catching the thin lamplight.

the tavern keeper

the tavern keeper

Strange tenants, stranger manners. Let the king sort them out. I have tables to mind.

The keeper disappears below, still grumbling. Eowyn settles beside the threshold, balanced and silent, both blades angled to command the doorway if either occupant lunges.

Orsik

Orsik

You are not the innkeeper. Show yourself, or I open this door the hard way.

Fetren’s gaze cuts toward Eowyn, then returns to the door. He lowers his center of gravity, ready to follow her first movement without crowding the narrow landing.

the deeper occupant

the deeper occupant

The royal message was bait. They have come for the vessel.

Behind the nearer man, chain scrapes stone again. The room’s lamplight throws two shadows across the floor, while Eowyn’s blades remain poised for the violent opening.

Quickly using her boot to slide the letter with the kings seal to Fetren so he can stow it away for safe keeping and further inquiry, she uses the surprise that she has over the rooms occupants to launch her attack. She throws a dagger at the sternum of the man at the door, hoping to gravely wound him but not kill him.

SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +0)

Eowyn’s boot sends the red-sealed letter skimming across the boards toward Fetren. He catches it beneath his coat as her dagger leaves her hand in the same breath.

The blade strikes the nearer occupant squarely in the sternum, driving him backward against the doorframe. His hidden hand opens, and his demand breaks into a stunned gasp.

Orsik

Orsik

Ambush! The vessel, now!

He remains standing, though badly wounded, one hand clamped over the dagger’s hilt. The door bangs wide, revealing a cramped room, overturned stool, and iron chain fixed to a black reliquary.

the deeper occupant

the deeper occupant

Veyr, move! They know the vessel is here!

The deeper figure jerks the chain toward himself, dragging the reliquary across the floor. Fetren steps into the landing, the royal message secured, and bars the clearest escape.

Fetren

Fetren

The letter is safe. Take the courier alive if you can. I will keep the other one from reaching the stair.

I allow Fetren to pass through the rooms door in pursuit of the second occupant and the reliquary. Kicking Veyr squarely in the groin and pulling my dagger from her sternum, I attempt to take him captive with little hassle. I shout to Vetren, “be careful we do not know of the other occupants character”

Eowyn drives her boot into the nearer occupant’s lower body. He folds with a strangled gasp, his grip loosening from the dagger’s hilt.

Eowyn

Eowyn

Fetren, be careful. We do not know the other occupant’s character.

She wrenches the dagger free from his sternum and catches his collar before he can collapse, forcing him face-first against the doorframe.

Orsik

Orsik

Yielding. I yield. Do not put that blade back.

Eowyn twists his arms behind him and pins his wrists with practiced efficiency. The courier is captive, conscious, and unable to reach the fallen weapon.

Fetren passes through the doorway after the retreating figure. Inside, the chain rasps over stone as the reliquary is dragged toward the room’s rear passage.

Fetren

Fetren

I heard you. I will assume nothing about the second occupant, and I will keep the vessel between us until I know more.

Using my free hand I hurl the dagger across the room, aiming for the deeper occupants neck, I am sure to throw far from Fetren to avoid him in the crossfire. Then I quickly pull rope from under my cloak and tie the hands of veyr behind his back. Then I survey the room for any further details now that I am inside.

Eowyn’s free hand snaps forward. The dagger crosses the room well clear of Fetren and strikes Veyr high at the neck, driving him against the rear wall as the chain falls slack.

Veyr

Veyr

The vessel is warded. Kill me, and its seal may answer in blood.

Fetren keeps the reliquary between himself and the fallen courier. Eowyn crosses to Veyr, removes the dagger, and loops rope around his wrists behind his back.

The bound deserter remains conscious but subdued. His narrow sword lies beneath the overturned stool, while a concealed passage yawns behind a hanging tapestry at the room’s rear.

Fetren

Fetren

Clean throw. The vessel is chained, but the chain is only iron. Look for the ward before anyone touches the lock.

Eowyn surveys the cramped chamber: two cups, fresh river mud, a royal courier’s satchel, chalk marks around the reliquary, and a bloodless sigil carved into the floor.

Veyr

Veyr

You have your prisoner. Take the satchel too, if you dare. The king’s seal is not the only thing hunting me.

Director's note

To clear any confusion, veyr is the nearer occupant who was injured and is now tied up, the deeper occupant died to the dagger in the neck

I glance at the dead second courier and ask Veyr who he was and what he means by the kings digit not being the only thing hunting him. Then I ask Fetren to survey the reliquary and ascertain anything he can about the ward, as it is more suited to his knowledge than to mine. Then leaving the bound and injured Veyr in the middle of the room, my greed compels me to cautiously search through the drawers and the two couriers belongings, include the dead couriers person, for anything of interest.

Eowyn

Eowyn

Who was the dead courier, Veyr? And what do you mean when you say the king’s seal is not the only thing hunting you?

Veyr

Veyr

His name was Orsik, a royal retrieval man. The seal belongs to the king, but the Ashen Choir hunts me for what lies inside that vessel. They want its ward broken.

Eowyn

Eowyn

Fetren, survey the reliquary and determine what you can about its ward. That knowledge is better suited to you than to me.

Fetren

Fetren

I will read the chalk and sigil without touching the lock. The ward is old, layered, and hungry for blood, but its first trigger is not the chain.

Leaving bound Veyr in the room’s center, Eowyn searches the drawers, satchel, overturned stool, and both couriers’ belongings. She finds a river-ferry token, three silver royals, a black feather, and a folded route marked with Ashen Choir signs.

Orsik’s coat yields a hidden key and a court summons bearing tomorrow’s date. One drawer sticks; forcing it splinters the wood with a sharp crack, and footsteps murmur faintly below.

Veyr

Veyr

That feather is their mark. Keep it hidden, elf. The Choir does not stop hunting when its prey changes hands.

I greedily snatch up and pocket anything of theirs with monetary value, leaving the suspect feather on the floor. Approaching veyr I ask Fetren about his thoughts on our next move and survey the room and hall for a way to slip out of the lodge with Veyr and the reliquary unnoticed. I ask Fetren if he has heard of the mentioned ashen choir and if he thinks he is able to take the reliquary and veyr safely back to the guild at the hidden location.

The drawer’s splintered crack carries down the stairwell, a small cost that stirs murmurs below. Eowyn leaves the valuables secured and turns toward bound Veyr.

Eowyn

Eowyn

Fetren, what is our next move? Have you heard of the Ashen Choir, and can you take Veyr and the reliquary safely to the guild’s hidden location?

Fetren

Fetren

The Choir is an old death-cult, patient and well-funded. I have heard enough to avoid its marked roads, but not enough to welcome a second meeting.

Fetren studies the chalk, then the chained reliquary. He tests the tapestry’s edge without touching the vessel and finds a narrow service passage descending toward the river lanes.

Fetren

Fetren

Yes. I can carry the reliquary with Veyr, if we keep the ward undisturbed. This passage reaches a shuttered cooper’s yard, then the guild route. We leave unseen.

The passage offers darkness, broken masonry, and a concealed exit beyond the lodge’s rear wall. Fetren takes position by the reliquary while Veyr remains bound and conscious, ready to move.

Eowyn tightens Veyr’s bonds until his wrists cannot slip free, then fastens a short lead to him. The bound deserter remains conscious and wary.

Veyr

Veyr

A lead, now? You mean to parade me through the city like a captured hound.

She gives the lead to Fetren while taking the reliquary’s chain. Together they lift and drag the black vessel through the concealed passage, keeping its chalked ward undisturbed.

Fetren

Fetren

Steady. The weight is honest, but the ward is not. Keep the chain from striking stone.

Eowyn reaches back and draws the tapestry closed. Its frayed hem settles over the hidden entrance, concealing the chamber, the motionless body within, and their route from the stair.

They hurry downward through broken masonry. Veyr follows under the short lead, forced to match their pace, while Fetren guides the reliquary toward the shuttered cooper’s yard.

Fetren

Fetren

The guild route lies beyond the yard. Keep low and silent. Once we reach it, the Choir will have to find another trail.
