Beyond the private booth, the arena boils with torchlight and distant shouting. Below, chained beasts circle beneath the mad king’s crimson balcony.
Eowyn stands beside another guild assassin, her white hair veiled in shadow, while the guild master confronts their richly robed client.

Guild Master
You promised the king’s seal, not a forged scrap bearing yesterday’s date. Exile has not made you honest.

The Exiled Client
Careful. The king’s ears reach farther than this booth, master. Deliver the target, and the seal becomes genuine.

Guild Master
You have no court, no coin worth trusting, and no protection left. Give me the truth before I give you back to the guards.

The Other Assassin
He is lying about the target’s whereabouts. His pulse jumps whenever he names the eastern gate.
The client’s smile tightens. From below comes a sudden roar, and every torch in the booth gutters blue as unseen sorcery passes through the arena.

“I listen closely to the conversation, awaiting what the guild master will ask of me.”
SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled +0)

Eowyn stills beside the booth’s carved screen, letting the arena’s uproar fall beneath the sharper sounds: the client’s quick breath, the chains below, the guild master’s measured silence.

Guild Master
You heard him. Eastern gate. Tell me what waits there, and whether his story has a spine.

The Exiled Client
She is an assassin, not a diviner. Send her toward the gate and lose your only chance to claim the king’s favor.
The guild master ignores the protest. His gaze settles on Eowyn, while blue fire crawls briefly along the booth’s iron fittings and fades.

Guild Master
The target is a deserter named Veyr, carrying a black reliquary. Find him before moonrise. Bring the reliquary unopened.

The Other Assassin
The eastern gate is watched from within, not without. Someone in the king’s household expects Veyr to arrive.
The client’s composure breaks at the name. Below, something heavy strikes the arena bars, and the crimson balcony falls silent as every beast turns toward the booth.

Eowyn
Will Fetren join me? And Veyr, do I capture him or kill him?
The guild master studies Eowyn over the blue-lit fittings. Below, the beasts quiet, leaving the client’s breathing exposed in the silence.

Guild Master
Fetren goes with you. Two blades may pass the eastern watch where one would be remembered.

Guild Master
Capture Veyr if he yields cleanly. If he reaches for the reliquary, or threatens its seal, kill him. The black vessel returns unopened.

Fetren
Then I will take the rooftops. Veyr watches doors, not shadows.
A spark leaps from the iron screen and bites Eowyn’s gloved hand, scorching the leather and raising a sharp smell. The client flinches back.

The Exiled Client
Now I know which white-haired knife the guild sends. If she fails, the king will know her face.
“I accept the guild masters request and tell him that we will leave at once. I ask if we know anything of veyr or his abilities and I tell the client that I am not the one exiled here”
SUCCESS (Great Reasoning, rolled +1)

Eowyn
We leave at once. What do we know of Veyr, or of his abilities? And you, client, are mistaken. I am not the one exiled here.
The guild master gives a curt nod. Fetren slips from the booth toward the stair, already measuring the quickest path through the arena’s galleries.

Guild Master
Veyr served as a royal courier before deserting. He knows hidden passages, court signs, and enough ward-lore to trouble a careless mage. He carries a narrow sword and favors misdirection.

Fetren
He also leaves no tracks when frightened. Watch the dust, not the trail. I will meet you beneath the eastern gate’s broken saint.

The Exiled Client
Words from a fugitive carry little weight. Exile clings to anyone who runs from a throne.
The guild master’s hand closes around the client’s writ, folding the forged seal until the parchment cracks. Blue fire withdraws from the iron fittings, and the arena doors below open.

Guild Master
Go. Bring Veyr or bring certainty. Fetren knows the route, and the moon will not wait for either of you.
“I follow Fetren through the galleries but not before haughtily turning my nose up to the client.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +0)

Eowyn turns her nose up at the exiled client, granting him neither answer nor glance. His insult dies beneath the arena’s renewed roar.

Fetren
Keep moving. The galleries twist twice before the eastern descent.
Fetren slips through the booth’s rear curtain. Eowyn follows, her white hair hidden beneath shadow as they enter galleries crowded with torchbearers and masked patrons.
They pass above the arena’s iron tiers. Chained beasts pace below, while blue remnants of sorcery shimmer across the stone and vanish beneath passing feet.

Fetren
There. Royal servants use that stair, but the broken saint gives us cover. Do not trust anyone wearing the king’s red cord.
Fetren leads her down a narrow servants’ stair and through a cracked arch. They emerge beneath the eastern gate, beside the headless stone saint.

Fetren
The dust is disturbed, but no clean trail marks it. Veyr has passed here recently, and he wanted us to notice.
“I note that veyr is undoubtedly far in front of us and likely enjoying either a pub, the arena, or somewhere we won’t find him. Our best bet is to find him along to road to his next destination or if he is lodging somewhere. I ask Fetren if he has any ideas.”
SUCCESS (Great Reasoning, rolled +1)

Eowyn
Veyr is surely far ahead by now, perhaps in a pub, at the arena, or hidden where we will not find him. We should search his road or lodging. Any ideas?
Fetren crouches beside the headless saint, rubbing disturbed dust between two gloved fingers. Beyond the gate, the road divides beneath rain-dark walls.

Fetren
He would not lodge near the arena. Too many witnesses, too many royal eyes. Couriers favor the Ash Bell tavern by the western road.

Fetren
The northern road reaches the old tollhouse, then bends toward the river ferries. If Veyr has a destination, he will choose that bend and change horses there.
He points through the gate toward a muddy lane marked by wagon ruts. A faint smear of pale dust crosses the stones, leading west before vanishing among hoofprints.

Fetren
We search the Ash Bell first, then cut across to the tollhouse. If he is lodging, we find his name in the tavern book. If not, we take his road.

Reach the Ash Bell tavern
“I agree with Fetren and praise him for his resourceful insight, knowing that my charisma makes me easier to work with. I take the rear behind him, following through the servants corridors and to the streets of the capital.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +0)

Eowyn
Resourceful insight, Fetren. We search the Ash Bell first, then take the tollhouse road.
Eowyn falls in behind him, guarding the rear as Fetren guides her beneath the eastern gate and into a maze of servants’ corridors.

Fetren
Praise spends less than blood, and yours is better kept inside your veins. Still, I will accept the compliment.
They pass sculleries, shuttered storerooms, and a stair smelling of wet stone. Fetren moves without haste, choosing turns that avoid guards and royal red cords.
At last a warped service door opens onto the capital’s western streets. Rain darkens the cobbles, and the Ash Bell’s painted sign creaks above the crowded road.

Fetren
There is our first answer. Keep watch behind us while I learn whether Veyr paid for a bed.
Fetren crosses toward the tavern, and Eowyn takes the rear as instructed. Behind them, the servants’ passage swallows its echoes beneath the city’s restless din.
“I chuckle at his unusual thanks and follow him into the tavern, being careful to note the areas surroundings and check for a suspicious activity or persons.”
FAILURE (Good Perception, rolled -1)

Eowyn chuckles at Fetren’s unusual thanks and follows him beneath the Ash Bell’s creaking sign. Wet cloaks, sour ale, and woodsmoke crowd the low-ceilinged common room.
She lets her gaze travel across the hearth, serving benches, stairwell, and shuttered windows, marking exits and hands before settling near Fetren’s shoulder.

Eowyn
Too many cloaks, cups, and moving faces for a clean read.
A serving girl crosses her view, and behind that brief obstruction a mud-spattered patron slips from the nearest bench toward the back passage.

Fetren
Do not chase him. The room is watching us already, and Veyr would not advertise himself so cheaply.
The patron vanishes before Eowyn can distinguish his face or clothing. Her sweep has failed to identify the suspicious figure, but the back passage bears fresh river mud.

Fetren
The tavern book is kept behind the bar. We can check Veyr’s name, or follow that mud before it dries.

“I offer to distract the bar patrons with my charisma while Fetren checks the lodge book for veyres name.”
FAILURE (Good Willpower, rolled -2)

Eowyn
I will draw the patrons’ attention. Check the lodging book while they are watching me.
Eowyn steps toward the nearest benches and lets her white hair fall clear of its hood, offering the room an easy smile and a polished, inviting manner.

the tavern keeper
Pretty tricks, elf. We have heard better from caravan singers.
Her charm gathers a few glances but no lasting fascination. Cups pause, then resume, while several patrons watch her with guarded amusement instead of turning fully away.

Fetren
That is enough. They are watching you, but not blindly. I need another moment with the book.
Fetren reaches behind the bar and opens the lodging ledger. The keeper notices at once, planting one broad hand over its pages before he can search further.

the tavern keeper
Names are bought with coin, not theatrical smiles. If you seek a lodger, ask plainly or leave my book shut.
“I am dismayed by the rooms unusual response yet will not be distracted from the mission. I try once more to create a quick distraction for Fetren, yet this time only to the tavern keeper.”
SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled +1)

Eowyn turns from the keeper with practiced disappointment, then catches a server’s laden tray with one swift hand before it can topple into the nearest patron.
Cups clatter against wood, ale splashes across the bar, and several patrons rise at once. The keeper’s attention snaps toward the commotion.

the tavern keeper
Hold still, you witless ox! Not another drop on my floor. You, elf, set that tray down.
As the keeper rounds the bar to inspect the spill, Fetren bends over the exposed ledger. His gloved finger pauses at a fresh entry inked beneath yesterday’s names.

Fetren
Veyr paid for a room under the name Merrow. Second floor, rear stair. He left no hour, but the ink is scarcely dry.
The keeper settles the tray upright and glares across the room, still absorbed in the disorder. Above, a floorboard creaks once, followed by careful silence.

the tavern keeper
Take your troubles upstairs, both of you, or take them elsewhere. I have no patience for spies in my common room.
“I apologize for my clumsiness to the lodge keeper, batting my eyelashes and acting flustered. Then hurriedly follow after vetren.”
SUCCESS (Fair Deceit, rolled +2)

Eowyn
Forgive my clumsiness, good keeper. I fear I have made a dreadful mess of your fine establishment.
Eowyn bats her eyelashes and lowers her gaze, adopting a flustered apology while ale glistens across the bar. The keeper’s scowl loosens into wary impatience.

the tavern keeper
Just keep your hands off the cups and your boots off my tables. Go on, then. Upstairs.
Fetren closes the ledger beneath his coat and slips toward the rear stair. Eowyn hurries after him, leaving the keeper to grumble over the spill.
The stair groans beneath their weight. On the landing, the tavern’s smoky din fades, replaced by damp plaster, narrow doors, and the faint scent of river mud.

Fetren
Merrow’s room is at the rear. Keep your eyes on the hinges and your ears on the stair. A courier trusts neither.
Fetren reaches the second-floor corridor and pauses beside the last door. A thin line of lamplight shows beneath it, while somewhere inside metal touches wood.
