The stairway ends in a broad underground chamber veined with old marble. A black vessel hangs above a perfectly still pool, its reflection pulsing with shadow magic.
The exposed strand from the summoning basin descends through the ceiling and joins the vessel. Monika, Yuri, Natsuki, and MC accompany Sayori, while the queen, prince, and royal guards hold the upper passage.
Monika
Everyone, stay alert. We find the source first, then decide whether it can be safely severed.
Monika keeps close beside Sayori, green eyes fixed on the hanging vessel. Yuri studies the marble seams, while Natsuki and MC watch the darkened alcoves.
Yuri
The chamber is older than the palace ritual room. These channels were carved to carry magic toward the pool.
Natsuki
And something used them recently. Look at those fresh marks around the anchor.
The reflected pool ripples without disturbance. In its surface, hooded silhouettes gather around the vessel, their faces hidden as the shadow strand tightens and the chamber answers with a low vibration.

Confront the ritual’s operators
“I inspect the reflected silhouettes for identities”
FAILURE (Superb Perception, rolled -3)
Sayori focuses on the reflected silhouettes, tracing their outlines through the pool’s shadowed surface. Arcane sight reaches past their hoods, seeking faces, clothing, and distinctive features.
The reflection bends beneath her scrutiny. Each silhouette fractures into overlapping afterimages, their forms losing human proportions before the pool seals them behind a black sheen.
Sayori
The reflections are magical impressions, not people standing around the vessel.
The shadow strand tightens in response, pulling the reflected figures into a single faceless shape. The vessel’s pulse slows, and the pool becomes opaque.
Yuri
They sensed the examination. Whatever created these images has hidden their identities behind the conduit itself.
Monika
Then we cannot identify them by sight. Sayori’s inspection still revealed something important: the reflection is a warded record, not a window.
Natsuki
Great. So staring at it only taught the magic to shut its door. We need another way in.
✓ Quest Accepted
Identify how the ritual operators concealed their identities
“I trace the shadow strand back through the vessel's warded reflection with arcana”
SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +1)
Sayori follows the shadow strand through the vessel’s warded reflection, guiding her arcane sight along each hidden fold instead of forcing the sealed surface.
The black sheen parts within her perception. Beneath the reflection lies a narrow channel descending into the pool, then turning toward a concealed chamber beneath the eastern foundation.
Sayori
The vessel is only a relay. The source lies below the eastern foundation.
The traced path sharpens into a complete magical route: the shadow enters through the basin above, passes through the hanging vessel, and terminates at a buried seal.
Yuri
There is a chamber beneath us, then. The old channels were designed to conceal that final descent.
Monika
Can you tell whether the buried seal is controlling the conduit or merely receiving it?
The reflection answers with a faint silver outline around the hidden seal. Its runes point outward toward the palace, revealing the buried mark as the controlling anchor.
“I ask Monika to guard everyone while I investigate”
SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +4)
Sayori
Monika, guard everyone while I investigate the buried seal.
Monika
Understood. Stay within calling distance, and we will keep the chamber secure.
Monika steps between Sayori and the others, directing Yuri, Natsuki, and MC into a guarded formation. The shadowed pool remains still as Sayori follows the silver outline.
Her arcane sight passes through the eastern foundation and reaches the buried seal beneath the chamber. Its outward-facing runes clearly control the conduit, binding the palace ritual to the vessel.
Sayori
The seal is controlling the conduit, and its anchor point is accessible from this chamber.
A hidden route reveals itself beside the pool: old maintenance stairs descend directly to the seal without disturbing the vessel or the summoning circle above.
Yuri
Sayori, the path is real. Your investigation has uncovered a way down, and the seal’s structure is now completely visible to us.
