The Adventure of Sayori

Light collapses into a vast marble chamber, leaving Sayori and the Literature Club inside a glowing summoning circle. Beyond it, armored retainers, broad-shouldered men and women in dark steel plate with crimson plumes on their helmets bar every exit, hands resting on sword hilts.

At the circle’s edge, an elderly king in crimson robes argues with a stern queen in silver and a young prince wearing polished blue armor. Behind them, attendants, young women and men in neat cream tunics with gold sashes, carrying themselves quietly beside the decorations stand beside untouched banners, flowers, and ceremonial goblets.

A crystal basin rises from the floor, its surface filling with shifting colors. The court falls silent, waiting for the summoned strangers to answer or act.

The crystal basin flashes before anyone can touch it. The glowing circle hardens into interlocking bands of violet light, sealing every figure inside its boundary.

A second sigil blooms beneath Sayori and the others, black at its center and ringed with unfamiliar runes. The marble floor groans as unseen magic clamps down.

The retainers raise shields instead of lowering swords. Above the basin, a dark reflection forms: a horned crown suspended in smoke, while the fresh sigil pulses once like a warning.

Sayori studies the black sigil without touching it. Its runes twist around a hollow center, drawing force from the summoning circle rather than creating power of its own.

Her arcane sight follows the hidden current and reveals a hair-thin break beneath the eastern rune. The sigil’s grip depends on that single binding thread.

The knowledge settles into Sayori’s mind with crystalline certainty: disrupting the eastern rune will sever the black sigil while leaving the summoning circle intact.

A second pathway also becomes clear, branching from the sigil toward the basin. If broken, it will expose the ritual’s origin and prevent the dark reflection from hiding its source.

Sayori kneels beside the eastern rune, keeping her hands just above the violet lines. She traces the hidden current with arcane sight, then pinches the binding thread with precise magic.

The eastern rune dims beneath her spell. Its symbols unwind without cracking the marble, and the black sigil releases a silent pulse through the chamber.

The pathway leading toward the crystal basin flares clear, exposing a thin strand of shadow magic beneath the floor. The horned reflection shudders, no longer concealed by the sigil.

Sayori leans over the crystal basin without touching its rim. Her arcane sight follows the exposed shadow strand through the marble, while the summoning circle remains steady beneath her.

Within the basin, the horned crown dissolves into layered images: a hidden chamber below the palace, a black vessel, and robed figures, adult human men and women in charcoal hooded robes, with varied builds and pale, intent faces feeding magic into its mirrored surface.

The shadow strand clarifies under Sayori’s inspection, revealing a second seal beneath the vessel. Its pattern bears the same hollow center as the broken sigil.

The queen studies Sayori across the glowing circle. Behind her, the basin continues to shiver, its dark reflection now exposed to every watching guard.

The queen raises one silver-gloved hand. Violet bands loosen around the chamber, then withdraw from the summoned group without disturbing the stable circle beneath them.

The guards lower their shields and form a protective perimeter instead of a cage. The chamber doors open under royal command, revealing a stairway descending toward the concealed vessel.
