Vasillia reaches the smuggler’s cove beneath a salt-stained cliff. A dark tide pool laps at the stones while sea caves yawn beyond it, breathing cold mist.

A deserter soldier, a gaunt middle-aged man in a battered brown cuirass, stands watch with a chipped spear. His gray beard is crusted with salt, and a red sash marks his abandoned regiment.

Beside the pool, a bound mapmaker kneels in a torn blue coat. She is an elderly woman with copper-brown skin, braided white hair, and ink-stained fingers clenched around the rope.

the deserter soldier

You there, adventurer! The caves, quickly. The baron’s men will be here before long.

the deserter soldier

the deserter soldier

A villager vanished because the village owes the baron a debt. This mapmaker knows where they hid the poor soul, but she refuses to speak.

the bound mapmaker

the bound mapmaker

I refuse nothing. I told him the charts show passages, not people. Untie me, and I may yet help you both.

The deserter points his chipped spear toward the largest cave, where a dim blue glow pulses beneath the waves. The mapmaker watches Vasillia in wary silence.

✓ Quest Accepted

Rescue the missing villager

“* kneel beside the mapmaker and inspect her bonds. Then I reach out and unbound her.* “Tisk, tisk.. they don’t listen and the just tie people up for not reason. I wouldn’t want to help them either.. truth me told. So which passage should I take? *I ask the mapmaker sweetly.*”

Vasillia kneels beside the mapmaker and examines the coarse knots. Salt has swollen the rope, but her nimble fingers find the weakened crossing.

Vasillia Bassith

Vasillia Bassith

Tisk, tisk. They do not listen, and they tie people up for no reason. I would not want to help them either, truth be told. Which passage should I take?

She works the knots loose and unbinds the mapmaker. The final loop snaps free with a sharp crack that echoes through the cave mouth.

the bound mapmaker

the bound mapmaker

The passage beneath the blue glow. It rises into a dry tunnel, then forks beside a stone marked with three waves.

The mapmaker rubs her reddened wrists and gathers her torn blue coat. The deserter flinches at the echo, turning his chipped spear toward the dark water.

the deserter soldier

the deserter soldier

Quietly, both of you. If the baron’s men heard that, they will search the cove first.

the bound mapmaker

The fork’s left branch leads toward the hidden chamber. Take the right, and you will find the missing villager.

The mapmaker rises carefully, flexing her freed hands. Beyond her, the blue glow shivers across the tide pool, revealing submerged steps descending into the cave.

the bound mapmaker

The right branch reaches the villager. Keep low, and do not touch the wave-marked stone unless you mean to wake what guards it.

A distant clatter rolls over the cove. Pebbles scatter from the cliff path as bootsteps approach, followed by the faint ring of drawn steel.

the deserter soldier

They are here sooner than expected. I can mislead them for a little while, but you must enter the water passage now.

the bound mapmaker

the bound mapmaker

Come, then. I know the first turn, and I will guide you until the tunnel rises dry.

She snatches a loose lantern from beside the pool and steps toward the blue-lit descent. Cold mist curls around Vasillia’s boots as the cave breathes in.

““Alright, I welcome you company. Granted it’s mutual so you don’t have to see those two idiots.” *I follow her watching every step and listening to every sound.*”

All right, I welcome your company. It is mutual, so you need not see those two idiots.

Vasillia follows the mapmaker into the blue-lit water passage, placing each boot carefully on the submerged steps while listening beyond the cave’s breathing hush.

the bound mapmaker

the bound mapmaker

Wise caution. The tide hides loose stones, but you have a sharper ear than most who come here.

Vasillia catches a faint scrape ahead and halts before a submerged iron chain can clink. The mapmaker gestures around it, guiding her safely past.

Vasillia Bassith

The current is pulling toward the right-hand passage.

The tunnel rises beneath their hands, water draining from their boots as the lantern reveals the stone marked with three waves and the dry fork beyond.

the bound mapmaker

We are through. The right branch leads directly to the villager, and this old chain marks a concealed supply niche. Its key is still inside.

“*I ask the mapmaker about the concealed niche and I decide to take the right branch he mapmaker mention takes me to the villager.* “Much obliged by your assistance luv.””

Vasillia Bassith

Much obliged by your assistance, luv. What lies within the concealed supply niche?

Vasillia turns from the three-wave stone toward the right-hand branch. Behind her, the mapmaker kneels beside the chain and indicates a narrow seam in the rock.

the bound mapmaker

the bound mapmaker

Old provisions, lamp oil, and sometimes a dry cloak. The smugglers kept it for emergencies, though the key may open more than one lock.

The mapmaker leaves the concealed niche untouched and lifts her lantern toward the right passage. Its floor slopes gently upward, carrying a faint human cough through the dry air.

The right branch leads to the missing villager.

the bound mapmaker

Come along, then. I will show you the safest footing, and soon you should find the villager beyond the next bend.

Vasillia proceeds down the right-hand branch with the mapmaker beside her. Water drips behind them as the blue glow fades, replaced by warm lanternlight and the promise of a nearby rescue.

“*I move quietly toward the distant cough.* “Is the missing villager still alive?””

Vasillia advances with measured steps, keeping to the tunnel wall. The mapmaker shields the lantern, and the distant cough resolves into a strained, living breath.

Vasillia Bassith

Vasillia Bassith

Is the missing villager still alive?

the bound mapmaker

the bound mapmaker

Yes. Weak, frightened, but alive. We are close enough now for them to hear us.

A loose slate shifts beneath Vasillia’s boot and clicks against the floor. The sound travels sharply through the dry passage, costing them their silence.

The tunnel opens into a cramped chamber. A young adult man with a gaunt face and tangled dark hair sits bound beside a cold brazier, his dusty green tunic torn at one shoulder.

the missing villager

the missing villager

Who is there? Please, if you came from the village, do not leave me here.

the bound mapmaker

the bound mapmaker

It is help, not the baron’s men. The noise may have warned whoever watches this place, so we must act swiftly.

“*I move quietly toward the distant cough.* “Is the missing villager still alive?””

FAILURE (Great Stealth, rolled -2)

The villager strains against his bindings, and the brazier’s ash stirs beneath him. A thin cord runs from his wrist toward a dark crack in the chamber wall.

the missing villager

the missing villager

Alive, yes. But do not cross the chamber blindly. That cord is tied to a bell in the watch tunnel.

the bound mapmaker

the bound mapmaker

Then the scrape has already told them someone came. We cannot linger, but cutting the cord may silence the warning before it rings.

The lantern reveals two possible approaches: a narrow ledge along the chamber’s left wall, and a low drainage channel beneath the brazier. Both reach the bound villager, but only one avoids the taut cord.

the missing villager

the missing villager

The channel opens behind me. It is cramped, but the smugglers used it to bring food. The ledge is safer for walking, if you can reach it quietly.

the bound mapmaker

the bound mapmaker

The baron’s men may be searching the upper tunnels already. Every breath we waste makes this rescue harder.

From beyond the crack comes a faint metallic tremor, not yet a bell, but the cord tightens as the villager shifts. The chamber waits for Vasillia’s next move.

“*I move quietly toward the distant cough.* “Is the missing villager still alive?””

SUCCESS (Great Stealth, rolled +0)

Vasillia slips along the chamber’s outer stones, her boots finding the quiet spaces between grit and slate. Lanternlight follows her without catching the warning cord.

Vasillia Bassith

Vasillia Bassith

Is the missing villager still alive?

the missing villager

the missing villager

Yes. I am alive, though my strength is fading. Please, do not leave me to the baron’s men.

His answer carries clearly through the chamber. Vasillia reaches his side, where the cord lies taut from his wrist toward the crack, untouched and silent.

the bound mapmaker

the bound mapmaker

Well done. You crossed without waking the bell. The drainage channel begins behind him and avoids the cord entirely.

the missing villager

the missing villager

It is narrow, but it opens beside my bindings. Cut those first, and I can crawl through while the watch searches elsewhere.

✓ Quest Accepted

Escape the approaching searchers

““Is the watch tunnel occupied by baron’s men?” *I ask the mapmaker while cutting the villagers binding gently and with care.*”

YES (Likely, rolled 47)

Vasillia Bassith

Vasillia Bassith

Is the watch tunnel occupied by the baron's men?

Vasillia cuts through the villager’s bindings with careful strokes, keeping the blade clear of his skin. The cord remains taut, but the bell stays silent.

the bound mapmaker

the bound mapmaker

Yes. I hear them beyond the crack, two men at least, searching the upper passage. Their boots are close.

the missing villager

the missing villager

Then the channel is our only quiet way out. Once these ropes loosen, I can crawl, if you guide me.

A muted scrape sounds beyond the wall, followed by a low command and the shifting of armor. Dust trickles from the crack onto the cold brazier.

the bound mapmaker

the bound mapmaker

Do not touch the wave-marked stone or the warning cord. Free him, and we will take the drainage channel before the search reaches this chamber.

the missing villager

the missing villager

They are near. If the bell rings, all three of us may be trapped.

“*I guide the mapmaker and villager through the channel quietly.* “Should I stay back and pretend to be lost to throw them off your trail? We can met up at the tavern later.””

FAILURE (Great Stealth, rolled -2)

Vasillia Bassith

Vasillia Bassith

Should I stay back and pretend to be lost to throw them off your trail? We can meet at the tavern later.

Vasillia guides the mapmaker and villager into the drainage channel, moving slowly through the cramped dark. Their shoulders brush wet stone, and every breath seems loud.

the bound mapmaker

the bound mapmaker

No. If you stay behind, they may catch you before you can mislead them. Keep close, and place his hands where I place mine.

The villager crawls after Vasillia, but his knee strikes a buried clay pipe. It cracks with a dull pop, and dust sifts from the channel roof.

the missing villager

the missing villager

I am sorry. I cannot move faster without making more noise.

Ahead, the channel narrows around a fallen grate. Beyond its rusted bars, lanternlight reveals a dry storage alcove with a second exit, but the grate will not yield quietly.

the bound mapmaker

the bound mapmaker

There is our opening. We cannot reach the tavern this way, but that alcove may hide us until the search passes, or lead toward the cliffside.

“*I guide the mapmaker and villager through the channel quietly.* “Should I stay back and pretend to be lost to throw them off your trail? We can met up at the tavern later.””

SUCCESS (Great Stealth, rolled +3)

Vasillia steadies the mapmaker and guides the villager through the narrowing channel. They pass the fallen grate without a clang, reaching the dry storage alcove beyond.

the bound mapmaker

the bound mapmaker

There. Lower him beside the empty crates. The searchers will pass overhead, and the cliffside exit lies beyond that shutter.

The villager folds against the dusty wall, breathing hard but safely hidden. The mapmaker eases the rusted shutter open, revealing a slit of moonlit air.

the missing villager

the missing villager

You brought us through. I can walk now, if slowly. The tavern is still the safest place to regroup.

the bound mapmaker

the bound mapmaker

The tiefling chose the harder path and made it seem effortless. Perhaps the baron has finally misjudged his prey.

Above, armored footsteps cross the tunnel mouth and fade toward the chamber they escaped. Cold cliff air enters through the shutter, carrying salt and freedom.
