Before the knight’s tent, battle drums mutter beyond the camp. Inside, a wounded man-at-arms crouches beside a royal messenger’s corpse, one hand pressed to his torn side.

The Wounded Man-At-Arms
They killed him for this. The dispatch carries terms meant to settle the border dispute, and I swear it.
He thrusts a bloodstained packet toward Roland. Wax has broken across its seal, and a dark smear marks the folded parchment.

The Wounded Man-At-Arms
Take it, my lord. If they find it on me, they will call me the murderer and hang me before sunset.
Boots pound outside. Canvas shudders as armed soldiers gather around the tent, their voices sharp beneath the snapping royal colors.

Royal Messenger
By order of the officers, stand clear and surrender the murderer!
The wounded man-at-arms looks from the entrance to Roland, pale beneath the grime. Outside, hands close around spear shafts as the tent flap lifts.
✓ Quest Accepted
Clear the man-at-arms of murdering the royal messenger
✓ Quest Accepted
Deliver the border-dispute dispatch
Director's note
I look at the man-at-arms' wounds to see if i can see how he got them
“These wounds look quite bad. How did you receive them?”
FAILURE (Fair Diplomacy, rolled -4)

Roland Duchamp
These wounds look quite bad. How did you receive them?
Roland studies the man-at-arms at close range. The tears in his side are ragged, and bruising darkens his ribs beneath the torn padding, but no blade remains lodged there.

The Wounded Man-At-Arms
A spear caught me when I tried to shield him. Then another man struck the messenger down. I swear I never touched him.
His attempt to explain becomes a frightened confession. He clutches his side, and the packet slips from his grasp, landing beside the corpse with a soft slap of parchment.

The Wounded Man-At-Arms
No, listen, my lord. I was carrying it for him. I found him already dead.

Royal Messenger
He admits he carried the dispatch. Seize them both!
The tent flap jerks wider. Four soldiers level their spears through the opening, while the wounded man-at-arms stares at Roland, suddenly understanding that his answer has made escape harder.
“Are there a lot of soldiers?”
NO, AND WORSE (Likely, rolled 100)

The four soldiers are not a full search party, but their formation tightens in the narrow tent. The nearest spear hooks the fallen packet away from the wounded man-at-arms’s reach.

Royal Messenger
The dispatch is recovered. The wounded man and the armed stranger stand accused until the captain decides otherwise.
A young adult man in a rain-darkened surcoat pushes through behind them, narrow-faced beneath a steel cap. A red plume marks him as their officer, and his eyes fix on the broken wax.

The Red-Plumed Officer
No one leaves. The seal was broken before this packet reached my hands, and the messenger lies dead inside a guarded camp.

The Wounded Man-At-Arms
My lord, they will hang us both. Tell him you saw the wounds. Tell him the spear did this, not me.
The officer steps over the corpse and lifts the dispatch without opening it further. Outside, the soldiers’ comrades begin closing the camp lane, turning a tent arrest into a public charge.

The Red-Plumed Officer
Disarm him, and bind the man-at-arms. If either resists, call the provost.
“Does the man-at-arms' wound look like it was made by a spear?”
NO, AND WORSE (Even, rolled 97)

At close range, the wounds do not match a spear. Their narrow entries lie too close together, and the bruising beneath the ribs suggests a short blade struck twice from the front.

Roland Duchamp
The wounds are too narrow for a spearhead.
The wounded man-at-arms tries to straighten, but the effort drains what color remains in his face. Fresh blood seeps through the torn padding, and his knees buckle beside the corpse.

The Red-Plumed Officer
That is no spear wound. He was stabbed at arm’s length, and he is failing now. Bind him before he can hide what he knows.

The Wounded Man-At-Arms
I told you, my lord. I never struck him. Someone used me to carry the packet, then left me here to take the blame.
The soldier with the hooked spear, a young adult man with a stocky build, weathered face, close-cropped black hair, and a battered steel cap over a brown leather jerkin advances to seize the wounded man-at-arms, while another reaches for Roland’s weapon. The officer keeps the dispatch raised, its broken seal now evidence of a deeper betrayal.

The Red-Plumed Officer
No one touches that packet again. Take both men to the provost, and send for the camp surgeon before this one dies on my floor.
Director's note
I remove my weapon and hand it to the guards
“"Excuse me. I can remove my sword myself." Be careful with it.”
SUCCESS (Superb Agility, rolled -1)

Roland Duchamp
Excuse me. I can remove my sword myself. Be careful with it.
Roland eases the rapier from its scabbard with deliberate control, keeping the point clear of every nearby body. The wounded man-at-arms watches from beside the corpse, breathing shallowly.
He turns the hilt outward and offers the weapon to the soldier with the hooked spear. The soldier accepts it, wrapping one hand around the guard and keeping his spear angled aside.

The Soldier with the Hooked Spear
Slow and sensible. Keep your hands where I can see them.
The red-plumed officer lowers the dispatch only after the blade is safely beyond Roland’s reach. His gaze shifts to the wounded man-at-arms, whose knees tremble beneath him.

The Red-Plumed Officer
Good. Bind the wounded man first, and keep the stranger under watch. The surgeon moves now.
“Does the man-at-arms have a weapon that looks like it could create the wounds on the messenger?”
NO (Even, rolled 65)

The hooked-spear soldier searches the man-at-arms beneath the officer’s watch. He finds only a belt knife, its short, blunt-edged blade suited to cord and camp chores, not the narrow wounds in the messenger’s chest.

The Soldier with the Hooked Spear
Nothing here matches those punctures. Only this utility knife, and it has not seen fresh blood.
He holds the knife by its cord-wrapped handle, keeping it away from the corpse. The blade is too short and broad to account for the paired entries beneath the messenger’s ribs.

The Wounded Man-At-Arms
I carried no sword, no dagger. I swear it. They left me only the dispatch and these wounds.
The red-plumed officer studies the little knife, then the messenger’s torn clothing. His expression hardens, but the accusation against the wounded man loses its simplest proof.

The Red-Plumed Officer
Keep him bound, but do not call this knife the murder weapon. The killer carried something else, and the packet was planted on him.
Director's note
I watch the soldiers for any suspicious activity

Roland watches the soldiers instead of the knife. The two at the entrance, both young adult men with average builds, light skin, short brown hair, and dark red surcoats over brown trousers keep their spears trained inward, while the third glances repeatedly toward the officer’s dispatch.
The wounded man-at-arms shifts against the canvas, exposing the paired punctures beneath his ribs. Their edges are clean, narrow, and angled slightly upward, unlike the ragged tearing a spear would leave.

Roland Duchamp
The wounds were made by a narrow blade, and the blows came from in front.
The soldier with the hooked spear notices Roland’s scrutiny and searches the tent with a guarded glance. His eyes pause on the corpse, then on the officer’s sealed packet.

The Soldier with the Hooked Spear
My lord officer, the men outside are watching the lane, but no one saw a stranger enter this tent. Someone here had time to plant that dispatch.

The Red-Plumed Officer
Then search the tent again, carefully. Touch nothing that must remain where it lies, and keep every soldier who entered this lane in sight.
The soldiers obey, but their formation loosens for the search. One steps toward the rear canvas, leaving a narrow gap beside the entrance while the officer guards the dispatch.
Director's note
I scan the inside of the tent for clues

The soldier at the rear canvas lifts a hanging fold and finds only rain-darkened earth beyond it. His gaze drops to the tent stakes, then returns too quickly to the dispatch.
Roland’s scan finds a shallow disturbance beneath the corpse’s shoulder, partly hidden by the fallen packet. A narrow glint shows between trampled straw and canvas shadow.

The Wounded Man-At-Arms
There, beneath him. I never moved the body, I swear it. That was not there when I found him.
The hooked-spear soldier crouches without touching the glint. It is a slim, blood-darkened blade, concealed beneath the messenger’s coat and angled toward the tent wall.

The Red-Plumed Officer
Hold position. Soldier, lift the coat with your spear point. No hands near the hilt until I see what is beneath it.
The spearhead raises the coat. The blade is narrow enough to match both wounds, while a faint smear marks the inner canvas where someone may have knelt.

The Soldier with the Hooked Spear
My lord, the weapon was hidden after the killing. Search every man who entered this tent, and no one leaves the lane.
“I identify the hidden blade as the murder weapon”
SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled +0)
Roland studies the exposed blade, then the paired wounds beneath the messenger’s ribs. Its narrow, blood-darkened point and clean edges match the punctures precisely, while the smear on the canvas marks the killer’s crouched position.

Roland Duchamp
That blade made the messenger’s wounds. It is the murder weapon.
The hooked-spear soldier keeps the weapon pinned beneath his spear point. The red-plumed officer leans closer, his expression sharpening as the evidence settles the question.

The Red-Plumed Officer
That is the weapon. The wounds, the blade, and the blood on the canvas agree. The man-at-arms was framed.

The Wounded Man-At-Arms
Then you believe me, my lord? I carried the packet, but I never held that blade.
The officer raises one hand, halting the soldiers’ search. The blade remains beneath the spear, and every eye in the tent turns toward the broken dispatch and the corpse beside it.
