Adventure of Zayne 1

A young adult woman crouches outside the storm grate, wearing a mud-streaked county rescue jacket over dark work clothes. Her brown braid is loose, and a pale scar cuts one eyebrow. A hatchet hangs low beside her leg.

Mara raises a crumpled scrap of red flannel between two fingers. Dark blood marks the fabric, but the grate and distance conceal who it came from.

Behind her, figures drift between abandoned cars. Zombies shuffle into the parking lot, their uneven footsteps growing louder against the wet pavement.

The culvert holds the cold smell of concrete and runoff. Behind Zayne, broken boards seal the ditch; ahead, Mara watches the approaching dead and waits for his response.

Mara hooks the hatchet through the storm grate and hauls it sideways. The rusted frame screeches, opening just enough for Zayne to force through.

He runs the ditch toward home, boots slipping through mud and gravel. Behind him, zombies crowd the parking lot, but Mara’s footsteps draw them away from the culvert.

The house stands open and battered. His family emerges through the back yard, carrying only what they can manage, and follows him toward an old county sedan.

Zayne reaches the driver’s door as his mother and sister climb in. The engine coughs once, then dies. A second turn produces only a weak click.

The failed ignition carries across the dark lots. Zombies begin turning toward the sedan, while the family remains trapped beside the silent car, North Platte still far beyond reach.
