Adventure of Nick

Behind Nick, the marked scroll remains sealed as the archive floor splits apart. A narrow stair opens beneath it, descending into an unfinished gallery of pale stone and raw dust.

Oath-tablets line the descending walls, their edges unfinished and their inscriptions abruptly abandoned. At the gallery’s end, fresh cuts gleam across a carved witness-stone, still sharp against the ancient masonry.

The crown rests behind him beside the basin, its dark eye reflecting a thin route downward toward the tomb’s deeper foundation. The black relic warms in Nick’s grasp.

Fresh lettering cuts through the witness-stone’s carved surface. One name stands clear among the unfinished marks: the vizier. No title, accusation, or explanation follows it.

Far above, the bound prisoner remains bound beside the wagon while the caravan folk hold their barrier. The vizier and his halted raiders stay at the tomb entrance, separated from Nick by the descending dark.

The new stair waits open beneath the archive, its unfinished steps leading toward the reflected route and the deeper foundation. Nothing moves in the gallery except dust slipping from the fresh cuts.

Nick follows the crown’s reflected eye down the unfinished stair. Its silver glimmer bends across each pale step, guiding him into the gallery without a false turn.

The oath-tablets pass close on either side, their abandoned inscriptions ending in broken strokes. Dust slides from the walls as Nick reaches the gallery’s open floor.

Nick crosses the gallery toward the witness-stone. The fresh cuts sharpen under the crown’s reflected light, while older carvings recede beneath pale dust.

At the stone, the unfinished marks resolve into a record of the vizier’s arrival and a command carved over older testimony. The vizier’s name is fully legible.

A narrow groove beneath the fresh lettering holds a smear of dark mineral dust, leading from the inscription toward a hollow in the foundation wall. The route and its purpose now stand clear.

Nick bends over the witness-stone, studying the fresh cuts by the crown’s reflected light. He traces their depth, angle, and the dark mineral smear without touching the inscription.

The strokes were made from the gallery floor, not from within the hollow. Their pressure is uneven, with a shallow hesitation before each downward hook, as though the carver’s hand weakened while working.

A faint imprint remains beside the newest name: the edge of a signet pressed into soft mineral dust. Its repeated notch matches the jeweled seal worn by the vizier above.

The groove confirms the direction. The hand that cut the name stood here, then dragged the marked tool toward the foundation hollow. Nick’s own grip and blade left no trace on the stone.

The answer settles plainly: the vizier cut the newest name. Nick did not make these marks, and the mineral trail leads directly to the hollow where the vizier concealed his work.

The mineral groove does not end at the hollow. Under the reflected silver, it divides into hair-thin channels that run through the gallery walls, joining the abandoned tablets and the stair above.

The fresh cuts answer one another across the foundation. The vizier’s mark appears at the stair, the witness-stone, and the sealed archive, binding his presence to the tomb’s entire hidden order.

Far above, the vizier remains at the entrance with his halted raiders, while the bound prisoner stays bound beside the wagon. The separated factions still hold their dangerous standoff.

The hollow’s darkness now reads as the final chamber of that alteration. Sahir Vey’s connection reaches through the whole tomb, and whatever he concealed below was prepared to answer only to him.

Nick turns from the foundation hollow and climbs the unfinished stair with measured care. Pale stone presses close around him, while the black relic gives a faint warmth at his side.

He passes the abandoned tablets and crosses the gallery without disturbing their brittle inscriptions. The passage upward remains clear, its channels silent beneath the worn steps.

Nick reaches the archive and continues through the circular chamber. The sealed scroll, basin, and abandoned crown remain undisturbed behind him as he follows the rising passage.

He climbs through the hidden doorway, crosses the lower chamber, and retraces the safe steps beneath the inverted arch. At last, Nick emerges into the tomb above, with the open stair behind him and the surface ahead.

Daylight spills across the sealed tomb entrance. The bound prisoner remains secured beside the wagon, while Sahir Vey and his halted followers hold their positions beyond the stair, all turning toward Nick’s return.
