The seal throbs like a second heart, and the bone-pit answers with a shudder. Golden light knits tighter, but the surge runs straight through Soros Corvanus’s arms and into his ribs like a hammerblow.

Valerius sags against the post, wrists straining in their bonds, his face pale with panic as the ritual keeps feeding.

Valerius

Valerius

Stop, or you will kill us both. There has to be another way to hold it.

The Grave-Warden

The Grave-Warden

There is. Decide, keeper. Brace the seal, or let the pit take what it is owed.

Soros Corvanus

Soros Corvanus

I hold it.

The answer is immediate. The golden filament tightens around Soros’s will, and the chamber’s pressure eases by a breath, as if the dragon beneath the bones has accepted his hand on the reins.

Ash spirals higher. Soros feels the cost at once, a cold ache behind the eyes and a deep tremor in the bones, but the seal stays steady. The path forward is clear now, keep feeding the rite, or find a way to bear its burden without breaking.

Bear the ritual’s burden without breaking

I I channel the ritual's excess heat into my staff to ease the strain on my ribs. And force the golden light to weave into my own shadow to anchor the burden.

Soros turns the staff through the hottest thread of the seal. The quartz sphere drinks the excess fire, and the pressure in his ribs eases at once.

The golden filament slips from a raw lash into a steady tether, then sinks into the shape of Soros’s shadow on the stone. It locks there, dark and bright at once.

Ash whirls above him in a tighter spiral, but the flare no longer hunts wildly. It bends, following his stance instead of fighting it.

What have you done to it? It is not tearing anymore.

He has given the burden a spine. Watch, Valerius, and learn restraint.

Soros’s shadow spreads long beneath him, pinned to the ritual’s glow, while the bone-pit falls quieter around the new balance.

Keep that shape, keeper. If you lose the shadow, the seal will remember how to break.
