The Child and the Burning GrimoireBrady, Texas town square
The Child and the Burning Grimoire

Brady’s town square sits under a bruised twilight, the sun gone as if cut from the sky. Flagg steps into the center of it and feels the cold before he sees the source.

A child stands on the stones beside a smoldering leather-bound grimoire, pages blackening at the edges. Each tear from the book makes the air drop another degree, and the shadows around the square stretch toward Flagg like searching hands.

Flagg’s eyes catch the child’s face, and the glow there is wrong, sickly, almost lantern-like beneath the skin. The thing on the ground gives off a thin reek of ash and old rain.

Flagg

Flagg

The book is still active.

The Child

The Child

Don’t come closer.

The child rips another page free. The torn sheet curls into cinders in their small hand, and the nearest shadows tug harder at Flagg’s throat, as if testing for a grip.

The Child

The Child

He said it would open when I finished.

Somewhere beyond the square, a church bell gives a dead, muffled strike that does not seem to come from any bell tower at all. The child flinches, but does not stop tearing.

The Child

The Child

Do you know how to make it stop, mister, or do I keep going?

✓ Quest Accepted

Stop the child from destroying the grimoire

Can I reach the child before the next page is torn?

NO (Even, rolled 68)

The shadows coil around Flagg's ankles like iron shackles, pinning him to the cold stone just as the child's fingers snap the spine of the book further. The distance between them remains an unbridgeable chasm of freezing air.

Is the child under a curse?

YES (Likely, rolled 43)

Flagg

Flagg

The black veins pulsing beneath their skin are not natural, they are the mark of a binding hex.

The Child

The Child

It burns, Flagg. The words inside are screaming to get out, and I am just the vessel they chose to tear through.

I grab the grimoire from the child

FAILURE (Good Strength, rolled -4)

The Child and the Burning Grimoire

Flagg lunges for the grimoire, fingers closing on singed leather. The child jerks back at the same instant, and the book slips just out of reach.

The charred cover cracks wider in their grip. A ribbon of soot-black smoke spills out and lashes around Flagg’s wrist like a living cord.

Flagg

Flagg

The smoke is coming from the pages, not the fire.

The Child

The Child

Don’t touch it. It knows you.

The violet glow in the child’s veins brightens hard enough to show through their skin. Their free hand twists another page loose, and the shadows on the square tighten again, crawling back toward Flagg’s legs.

The grimoire hangs half-open between them, its torn spine pulsing like a wound.

The Child

The Child

If it opens fully, I lose it, and if I stop, it stays hungry.

Is the grimoire resisting the child?

YES (VeryLikely, rolled 19)

The Child and the Burning Grimoire

The grimoire shudders in the child's grip, its leather binding groaning as if the book itself is fighting to snap shut against their fingers.

Flagg

Flagg

It is not just the child tearing the pages. The book is actively resisting, trying to pull its own spine back together.

The Child

The Child

It hates me for holding it open. It wants to be whole again, even if it kills us both.

I call out that the book is alive and listening

SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +2)

The Child and the Burning Grimoire
Flagg

Flagg

The book is alive. It is listening.

The child goes still. Their hands keep shaking, but the tearing stops for a breath.

The Child

The Child

Listening to what, exactly?

Smoke threads off the grimoire’s split spine, then curls toward Flagg instead of the pavement.

The Child

The Child

I can feel every word in it biting back. If it hears me fear it, it pulls harder.

Flagg

Flagg

The binding is responding to voice as much as force.

The Child

The Child

If you know a way to make it stop listening, tell me before it takes the rest of me.

Is the grimoire reacting to my voice?

YES, BUT (VeryLikely, rolled 69)

The grimoire shudders at the sound of Flagg's voice, its pages snapping shut with the force of a closing iron trap. The sudden movement severs the child's fingers from the binding, and the book erupts into a blinding, violet-black flame that consumes the remaining pages in an instant.

I grab the child before they flee

SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +2)

The Child and the Burning Grimoire

Flagg moves fast and catches the child by the arm before they can bolt. Their shoulders jerk hard in his grip, smoke curling between his fingers and their sleeve.

The Child

The Child

Let go. It is still in there.

The ash at their feet stirs once, a faint violet thread breathing up through the blackened crumbs. The child stares at it, frozen, then stops fighting for one shaking breath.

Flagg

Flagg

The smoke is still moving.

Flagg keeps hold of them. The child swallows, wide-eyed, and looks from his face to the dead book's remains as if expecting the thing to speak again.

The Child

The Child

If you touch the ash, it may wake.

The square goes unnaturally still around them. The last ribbons of smoke thin over the pavement, and the child stands pinned in Flagg's grasp, waiting for his next move.

I inspect the ash without touching it

SUCCESS (Fair Investigation, rolled -1)

The Child and the Burning Grimoire

Flagg leans in without crossing the ash, and the violet thread sharpens in his sight. It is not just smoke. Tiny letters slide through it like minnows in dark water, then vanish into the soot.

Flagg

Flagg

The ash is still carrying words.

A pulse answers from the pile, and the soot crust cracks open in a thin ring. The air smells of burned paper and rain on hot stone.

The Child

The Child

Did you see that? It is trying to write itself back together.

The child jerks at Flagg's grip, more from fear than escape, and one of the torn fingertips leaves a dark smear on his sleeve. The ash shivers toward the stain.

The Child

The Child

Do not let it hear you think.

Flagg keeps the drift of ash in view. Beneath the violet wisp, a final scrap of burned cover becomes visible, marked with a seal that looks half broken and half waiting.

✓ Quest Accepted

Learn how to silence the grimoire

Press my palm against the seal to force it to stay broken.

SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +0)

The Child and the Burning Grimoire

Flagg sets his palm onto the broken seal. The ash hisses under his hand, then goes still, as if something within it has been pinned flat and made to remember its shape.

The violet thread thins at once. The broken fragment darkens, its edges paling from ember-red to dead gray.

The Child

The Child

It is stopping. I can feel it stop.

The soot loses its twitching hunger. A few letters rise, then collapse into dust against Flagg's skin.

Flagg

Flagg

The seal holds under pressure.

The Child

The Child

Do not lift your hand yet. If it turns over, it will start listening again.

Beneath Flagg's palm, the ash settles into a hard, mute ring, and the square waits, unnaturally quiet.

I ask the child what keeps it listening

FAILURE (Poor Psychology, rolled -1)

The Child and the Burning Grimoire
Flagg

Flagg

What keeps it listening?

The Child

The Child

The words do. It hears through them, like teeth behind a mouth.

The Child

The Child

If I name it wrong, it wakes up hungry again.

The child swallows hard and keeps their eyes on Flagg’s hand, as if the pinned ash might suddenly speak.

The Child

The Child

It listens when I fear it, when I speak near it, when I try to break it. Anything that gives the words a shape.

Under Flagg’s palm, the mute ring gives one small, dry tick, then holds.

The Child

The Child

If you want it quiet, do not ask it. Make it empty.

I ask how to make it empty

SUCCESS (Poor Psychology, rolled +2)

The Child and the Burning Grimoire
Flagg

Flagg

How do I make it empty?

The Child

The Child

You stop feeding it shape. No names, no fear, no fight. Let the last words fall out, then seal what is left with silence.

The child’s breath trembles on the last word. Their injured hand curls tight against their chest, and the ash under Flagg’s palm gives another dry, insect-like tick.

The Child

The Child

It hates stillness. It clings to meaning like a drowning thing.

A faint violet thread leaks from the cracked ash pile and fades before it can rise. The square stays hushed, but the silence feels strained, waiting.

The Child

The Child

If you hold it down while I strip the last echo away, it should go hollow. After that, I can bury the rest.

Their eyes lift to Flagg’s face for the first time without flinching, raw and searching, as if his answer matters more than the grimoire now.

I ask what happens if the silence fails

SUCCESS (Poor Psychology, rolled +2)

Flagg

Flagg

What happens if the silence fails?

The Child

The Child

Then it remembers itself. First as a whisper, then as names, then as a mouth hungry for whoever is nearest.

The Child

The Child

When it gets a body, it doesn’t just burn the room. It starts choosing what gets forgotten.

Their stare drops to the ash under Flagg’s hand, and the violet thread there shrinks back as if listening too.

The Child

The Child

I can strip the last echo, but if I stumble, it will grab the nearest shape and wear it.

They swallow, then reach their good hand toward the ground, hovering just short of the ash, waiting for Flagg to keep it dead still.

The Child

The Child

If you stay with me, I can finish this. If you let it speak, we both lose the quiet.

I keep my palm pressed and let the Child finish

SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +0)

The Child and the Burning Grimoire

Flagg keeps his palm flat. The ash goes still under the pressure, and the thin violet seam gutters out, as if the last breath is being pinned back inside the ruin.

The Child

The Child

Now. Hold it like that.

They press two fingers to the ground beside Flagg’s hand and drag them in a slow circle. The ash pulls inward, tighter, darker, then breaks apart into a powdery ring.

The Child

The Child

Keep empty. Don’t let it catch a thought.

A dry whisper leaks from the powder, but it has nowhere to gather. The sound thins, collapses, and vanishes into the square.

The Child

The Child

It’s gone quiet. Really quiet.

The child draws back with shaking breath, and the ground under Flagg’s hand cools at last. Only a blackened smear remains where the grimoire was, broken into dead dust.
