Adventure of Kira 1

The diner sits beneath a washed-out interstate sign, its parking lot suddenly filling with black SUVs. A presidential motorcade turns in, sealing off the nearest exit.

Inside, a middle-aged woman with tired eyes, graying curls, and a rumpled green cardigan grips the edge of a booth. A teacher’s badge identifies her as Ms. Vale.

Two suited agents cross the lot toward the entrance, one speaking quietly into an earpiece. Behind the counter, a receipt printer chatters once and goes still.

Ms. Vale catches Kira’s eye and raises one hand, palm outward. With her other hand, she points beneath the booth, then toward the printer.

The agents reach the glass door. A uniformed escort holds it open while the diner’s bell gives a bright, ordinary chime.

Kira lunges as the first agent crosses the threshold, driving her shoulder into his chest and knocking him hard against the doorframe. The bell shrieks.

The second agent reaches beneath his jacket, but Kira kicks the booth seat into his knees, then strikes his wrist aside. His earpiece skitters across the tile.

Ms. Vale snatches the keys and hurries through the service door. Kira follows, taking a sharp hit across her ribs as the first agent grabs for her.

Outside, Kira reaches the sedan, gets Ms. Vale into the passenger seat, and throws herself behind the wheel. Tires squeal across the lot.

The sedan blasts through the open exit and disappears beneath the overpass. A side mirror hangs loose, and Kira's ribs ache with every turn, but the diner and motorcade fall behind.
