The passage narrows to a hush. Cold stone, stale dust, and the faint tick of a lamp fill the dimness outside the Archive Room.
Bince sits on his heels with his pack open, trying to steady a loose strap. His hands shake, but his eyes keep flicking to Azera.
Xene leans close to the oak door, one palm lifted as if they can feel its grain sing. Their expression softens, listening for something only they can hear.

Bince
I know we have the right room. Still feels like my knees want to bolt without me.

Xene
Laska always kept a room like this. Quiet enough to make every breath sound guilty.
The silence answers them. Azera’s staff rests near her side while the corridor waits, patient and cramped, around the little circle of allies.

Bince
If this goes clean, I owe you more than thanks. I mean that.

Xene
Azera holds the room together better than any ward I know.

Reach the Archive Room
“I push the Archive Room door open”
SUCCESS (Good Strength, rolled -1)

Azera plants both hands against the oak and pushes. The door gives with a deep sigh, then swings inward on well-oiled hinges, spilling a seam of darker air and old paper into the passage.
Bince jerks upright, half laughing with relief. Xene lifts their hand from the wood, startled by the sudden opening, then leans toward the gap as if listening to the room breathe.

Xene
There. That sound, it is the room letting us in.
Inside, shelves crowd the shadows, and a narrow desk sits under a dim lamp. Dust lies undisturbed on the floor, except for one thin drag mark leading deeper between the stacks.

Bince
No lock, no alarm. I am beginning to hate how clean that feels.
From beyond the threshold comes a faint scrape, as if something in the Archive Room shifts in answer to the open door.

Xene
Azera, do we go in now, or do we listen first?
“I go into the Archive Room”
SUCCESS (Fair Agility, rolled -1)

Azera crosses the threshold in a single smooth stride, her staff clearing the jamb as the doorframe falls behind her.
The archive air closes around her, dry with paper dust and old lamp oil. The drag mark on the floor catches her eye, thin as a finger drawn through ash.

Xene
I hear it again, deeper in.

Bince
Then it is not empty. Good. Empty rooms make me nervous.
Azera’s boots stop beside the nearest shelf. The shelves lean close in the dimness, their spines packed tight, while the desk lamp throws a small gold pool over sealed ledgers.
The track goes between the stacks, not to the desk.
Ahead, something shifts softly in the dark between the aisles, just out of the lamp’s reach.

Xene
Azera, do you want the light on the shelves, or on that sound?
